Looks excellent Elliott, how many times have you sat and flown around your house with it? Hard to port!
Thanks Terry and Pagen. I didn’t know the ‘NIV’ classification so so that helps. It’s serial no 24 and that is pressed into the face, rather than painted or printed so there might not have been many of them produced, like aircraft carriers. The aircraft outline on the dial looks familiar but I can’t remember where from. Might take a pic to Yeovilton next time, I’m sure they’ve got nothing better to do!
I believe there was a problem with radio hatch locks on P40s. Reading accident reports at the PRO, several UK crashes were attributed to the hatch breaking free and damaging the tail. The extra lock may have been a fairly standard mod based on these findings. The stencilling does not look factory applied. The Curtiss stencilling I’ve seen is applied as a decal, rather than painted on.
That’s a good suggestion Tony. It does have aircraft rather than ship shapes on it though. Would explain why I can’t find a photo!
The only things burning are our wives ears Anon! I’ve looked at everything Naval I can think of but not found it:confused:
I’ve looked for the button marked ‘dog house’ but seems to be missing. I’ve also got a flap control, but it doesn’t work.
Good call!:p
It’s a pity they took the ammo boxes away, they probably had the serial on them. The vid reminds me of the scene in Star Wars with the Jawas.
Amazing footage. Such a pity that there doesn’t seem any evidence of serial or codes, despite the camera panning over the correct bits. Looks like the pilot slid the hood shut and set off.
My guess would be undercarriage door hinges, but very much a guess.
There’s a piece of it on eBay!
Listed as Stuka but almost certainly the ripped off radiator gills. :diablo:

I don’t get Sky. Ar*e.
Also on the shelf in Ian Allan in Cardiff, lots of Dan Snow but not much digging!
A very satisfactory conclusion.
Thanks vacb, I’ve been toying with the idea and have a couple of originals as patterns. The cases or at least bezels are the difficult bit, and my painfully slow work rate. I must stop looking at that Saharan P40 cockpit pic and do something useful!
