Chris, I appreciate your point about the unsung heroes, they’re no less worthy, and if you know any that wouldn’t mind a mention, please do so. Many of them intend to stay unsung by choice (they’re just doing the job they love), but this is simply (there’s that word again!) a thread where people can express their admiration for those that have made an impact to their perception of the preservation of historic aeroplanes.

This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive list – for goodness’ sake this isn’t an accademic exercise, nor is it the drawing up of the new year’s honours list.

Perhaps we could lighten up and take this thread as it was intended, by showing appreciation to those we admire.

    Rob

To be quite honest, I have been involved in the historic aviation industry, be it – Restoration, maintenance, operation etc for 20 odd years. I dont push my self forward or crave recognition. On the other hand, if people see me working on the aeroplanes and want to have a look or ask a question I will speak or show them what they want to see. If they want to know my name I tell them. A lot of you may know me, I don’t know, I’m not really that bothered. But I will say, there are many more worthy people in the industry than me. But if you ask us, you will probably be told its just a job, its what we do.
Please lets not ruin another thread by bickering and arguing.

    See ya.

    John Chilingworth.

Everyone who has helped build the classic jet scene we have today from Hunter One through to Delta Jets, Hawker Hunter Aviation, Air Atlantique, Kennet Aviation etc. Not just the people who started the collections but all the people who give up there spare time to make sure they fly and the people who have worked with the CAA to get them up in the first place.

Mr John Chilingworth. An engineers, engineer. Sadly no longer with us. I was fortunate enough to work with “JC” and he would part with information as if he was born to do so. A truly great man in the world of classic jets.

I guess that makes me part of the Duxford mafia…cool…:D

In line with what SteveYoung is saying, today my father finds out if the growth removed from his eye is cancerous or not…this has been hanging over my family since Christmas, and there have been times when I have watched some of the squabbling here in recent times and thought “c’mon, there are more important things to stress about”…We are all guilty sometimes overreacting to something that really isn’t that worth getting worked up about [b](and YES, I include myself in that before anyone says something)/[b], but there are situations that occur in life sometimes that really shake you up.

Take care Steve, you know you are among friends here šŸ™‚

Fingers crossed Ashley, give him our best wishes..
The people who know me, will no why I now use the signature shown instead of my old one. Last year I came very close to loosing my life. It tends to concentrate the mind.

Glad The Duxford pictures were okay. A bit large though.

I have found another one. The control tower looks more authentic in this condition. I don’t know if the paintwork was for the Battle of Britain film but I believe there was a lot of chipboard partitions inside.

The missing hangar had no remains as far as I remember.

I have to say that it was the BOB film that prompted us to cycle to Duxford, followed by Debden, which had a gate guardian (Hunter I think).

I also wrote at the time to the East Anglia ??????? Society who were based there. Any one remember them (Or their name)?

    Peter

    Thanks Peter,
I would have thought more people would have photos of old Duxford.
    See you soon I hope.

    Steve.

I’ll just state the view that I’ve always held, and will continue to trot out whenever arguments arise on here:

This is an internet forum. It ain’t real life. We all know where the ‘ON / OFF’ button is, and we all have the choice of whether to read posts and respond to them.

Today I feel that way more than ever. There is much, much more to life than this forum. Trust me on that. We had some news two days ago which has knocked us for six. Unlike our pc, it doesn’t have an ‘ON / OFF’ button.

So perhaps before folks start getting arsey with each other on here, perhaps they ought to remember that this ain’t the real world…

    Well put –
    I hope things are OK!.

Thanks for posting PNK and welcome aboard.

In 1972 was there anything left from the Battle of Britain filming that took place in 68, ie. remains of the old Belfast hangar etc..

    Septic.

Just a big space where it used to be :dev2:

I have just read the requests for the “old” Duxford. It prompted me to join today.

Hopefully the two scanned slides dated around July 1972 taken on my Instamatic appear okay.

They were taken whilst on a cycling holiday around the home counties airfields. Duxford was deserted apart from a couple of gliders in one of the hangars. There were brick huts on the south side and I remember cycling around the perimeter from the south and up the main runway heding west and coming back down towards the M11 end, which of course was not there at the time.

In need of some relief after my Top Deck Shandy and individual fruit pie we found that the control tower toilets in working order! The tower was open and we climbed on to the roof.

Probably the most memorable airfield visit!

    Thanks PNK, and welcome.
This is just the sort of thing I was looking for, thank you very much.
You can feel the atmosphere in these photographs. I’m sorry to go on but, I feel most of that has gone.
Thanks again PNK for these 2 wonderfull pictures

talking of early Duxford (as a museum) what year did the Spit V end up on it’s nose. I well remember being there but was it actually the first airshow to be held there since the take over by IWM – I don’t even think it was open on a daily basis then……

Don’t forget though it was the volunteers who provided the foundations upon which today’s edifice is built (not physically of course..). In the early days permanent staff could probably counted on the fingers of two hands.

That was in the good auld days when the MT section was actually based in the MT yard and everybody congregated in the office at the left end of the block backing on to the A505 – happy days

Not to sure – I think it was 1974/5 it was AB910. I think I have a very poor picture somewhere.
