You could apply that view to every museum or recreational facility. Art Galleries, Free Music concerts in London for VE Celebration, list could go on and on.
Point is, money comes from Heritage Lottery Fund which has nothing to do with NHS so it isn’t as if the money is being diverted from the hospitals.
Best Regards, Steve
The point DIGBY was making was, the amount, and not where it came from. And to be quite honest, I agree with him.
I should think he would say the same about the lump of granite at the hospital in London – money well spent- NOT.

Ah,
This old winge, back from the dead acompanied by the good old “Times used to be better” boys who know how to do it properly (- but can’t.)Cheers!
I have been keeping historic aeroplanes in far better condition (a safe flying condition IAW CAA Regulations) for a great number of years, and like those who know me will testify I don’t hold back when at Duxford either.
So until you know who you are talking about, and what we do, be very carefull what you say.

Greetings.
Well it is finally official! Nanton now has the fourth runnable Lancaster bomber in the world!
Bomber Comand Memorial WallAfter the dedication of the new Memorial wall to the 10000+ RCAF airmen who lost there lives in the fight for freedom, there was a flypast of vintage aircraft including a stearman, Beech 18, Tiger MOth and a 408 squadron Kiowa helicopter.
The lancaster was then ground run on the number three engine to the delite of all of those present.
Well done, the old farts would be proud of you.
The sight and sound of freedom.

Mike – a single bay would be ideal for a few aircraft . When we consider ‘expensive’
find out how much it cost to remove then glass panels from the AAM to move the Liberator in and you might well think that a replacement Belfast is good value.
Airspace is costing 23 million from memory -what does that work out at per SQ feet? I don’t mind discussing hangarage at Duxford again -certainly it’s somewhat more productive than the usual threads like ‘a container has arrived at Duxford -what’s in it ?’ threads.
David,
I think you’re burning your self out with this. I opened a thread about the historic atmoshere at Duxford (or lack of) some time ago. Its funny, maybe I’ve upset the grown ups on this forum at sometime or other, but I go told the same as you.
I remember some time ago people saying the Belfast hangers at Duxford are unique, I said, you obviously dont count the ones at Bracebridge Heath near Waddington or the other up around Liverpool way.
Duxford is one hell of a place, history and architecture. As I said before in a previous thread, what you have at Duxford now is – Asda (landwarfare) at one end, B&Q Supercentre (Airspace) at the other end and the Concrete Woodlouse (American Air Museum) in the middle. All the charm is disappearing and the historic outlook has gone.
Just my opinion, you don’t have to agree with it, but we are all entitled to one. And I bet the Varsity still ends up outside
Now then lets get back to the serious threads – whats in the container and are you sure the roundle on that Spitfire is the right size.

JDK- The BBMF Lancaster PA474 totally out eclipses the Vimy replica. It has been a contant part of the air display scene for decades and has acted as both memorial and inspiration to generations. It saw service in Africa mapping the continent and was used for research duties in the 1950’s . She is the real deal – built by the men who built her wartime brothers and flown progressively by guys who either flew them for real or the generations that have taken their place. To many she is a potent symbol
of the RAF and to many people in Lincolnshire one of the strongest symbols of the area.
The Vimy is a modern recreation of the type . She isn’t powered by RR and never has been . Certainly that is through reasons of practicality and availability . We cannot however imagine that we are flying around in an aircraft that had the reliability
of the 1919 examples. Modern engines are used and to a great degree appear to be more reliable.
The guys that operate her are indeed adventurers – however the guys of twenties had little in terms of safety aids -they had no integrated SAR facilities available to them -they had no GPS -VOR’s-transponders -modern survival equipment
or any other bits of kit that anyone nowadays uses for long distance over water travel.
Great that they have achieved records but she isn’t Voyager or indeed Space Ship One or any other the aircraft that have tested endurance or pushed the envelope
of flight. She has recreated what has been done before and that is no less worthy but a pioneer she isn’t.
As for Brooklands – I would hope that a Viscount would feature in the plans
to go undercover before a replica. Far more significant as a type .
Fair comment. No argument from me on that score.

Sir Stanley Hooker
Sir Stanley Hooker, Made the Merlin what it is.
I was very aware that I was flying an aeroplane that is an historical artefact in it’s own right and that I was very fortunate and honoured that Peter trusted me enough to fly. However I think Adrian had his toungue in his cheek then.
It took one Vimy to get to Australia in 1919
It took two Vimys and a DH9 to get to South Africa in 1920
and it took one to get to Ireland from Newfoundland in 1919So this one has achieved more than four original pioneering aeroplanes! Added to that, this one has crossed the US at least twice and done a bunch of other stuff.
I hate to tell you chaps, but it is due for honourable retirement as it is, in my opinion, too valuable to fly much more.
It has nothing left to prove.
But then, if Peter wants me to fly it again . . .
Its only a replica – Even if it has achieved quite a lot.
