THE RETURN……
TWENTY ONE WENT OUT THIS MORNING
AND THE SUN WAS IN MY EYES
AS I WATCHED THEM CIRCLE ROUND
BEFORE THEY VANISHED IN THE SKIES.
TWENTY ONE WENT OUT THIS MORNING
AND THE SUNLIGHT CAUGHT THEIR WINGS
AS THEY CROSSED THE LITTLE THICKET
WHERE A BLACKBIRD ALWAYS SINGS
LIKE BIRDS INTO THE MORNING
THEY FLEW I NOT NO WHERE
BUT SMALL AND SECRET IN MY HEART
ALL DAY I’VE HELD A PRAYER
TWENTY ONE WENT OUT THIS MORNING
RIDING SPLENDID THROUGH THE SKY
BUT STILL THERE IS NO SIGN OF THEM
THOUGH SOON THE DAY WILL DIE
THEN SUDDENLY THROUGH TIME AND SPACE
THERES SUNLIGHT ON A WING
AND ABOVE THE BEATING OF MY HEART
I HERE AN ENGINE SING
THE SUN STILL GOES ON SHINING
BUT MY WORLD GROWS DARK WITH FEAR
FOR TWENTY ONE WENT OUT THIS MORNING
BUT ONLY SEVENTEEN ARE HERE.
oh right thanks les I was still half asleep this morning from travelling back from waddo.
Forgive me for being a dunce but where were those F4 Phantoms’s from Turkey??.
they were in the static opposite the fun fair
Didnt Dave Gilmour own a few warbirds ? Intrepid Avaition comes to mind and they had a gnat amongst others, Does he still have involvement on the warbird scene ? I havent heard anything about him for a while.
I was talking with Lews wife last week about it and she was remarking how tragic it was etc… so I assumed they were there but I will double check.I also asked Lew the cause of the accident (Im no expert on the subject and have read no literature on it ) but he said simply it wasnt designed to go that fast and Donald knew it .
I am aquainted with Lew Norris and his wife and I know they were there on that day so I can ask them if they know anything about the flypast.
I go there often as its my local museum although some 20 miles away and agree its a great place ,last year I went to the anniversary of Neville Dukes air speed record and met the man himself, they also had most of the external aircrafts cockpits open ,I got to sit in the lightning and a couple of the others.
Thats a crime about the control tower, its a pity they cant take it down and move it onto the museum site. Most people who visit the museum dont even realise the control tower is still there.I remember about 20 years back driving around the runways and aircraft pens on my motorbike before it was put back to arable use like as mentioned on the ghost thread a very peaceful and serene atmosphere.
They also do a good breaky there in the little cafe.
you are correct sir ,I must have pushed the wrong button whoops My apologies
little error in film
Having an afternoon off work I decided to watch BOB once again and only just noticed in the scene where the Heinkels are taxiing across the grass for their first attack as one of them passes across the screen you can clearly see a roundel on its right wing,I assume its a Spanish one but no colour can be seen but a bit of a shoddy cover up job by the film people.
And what about We’ll Meet Again? Was that any good? I’ve seen photos from it, a B17 (I guess it’s Sally B.)
Yes it was Sally B used in the filming and it was filmed at West Malling, and of course the lovely Susannah York
my grandfather was on hms Valiant in ww1 my father did his national service in the RAF as a Nurse (could of been a bloody pilot) anyway spent his time with the aweful task of recovering crashed pilots remains around Cambridgeshire ,he was based at Oakington, then came the time for postings and he requested as far south as possible hoping to get to Tangmere the nearest base to Hove where he lived, but was sent to Aden !!! a bit too far south, there amongst other jobs he had the not so enviable task of checking the arab workers on base for crabs ! and guarding dead pilots remains in the morgue because the arabs were known to have stolen corpses.
The control tower at Tangmere is derelict and boarded up,I think the museum would love it but the two are at least half a mile apart.
according to the phone message its only open to UK residents.
Many thanks for that info Ray.
Ive got some pics of them taken last month if your interested Peter but I dont know how to post them .or I could send them to you by email.
