As regards being poorly trained, the US trained fighters in the Iraqi army are completely useless – a child armed with a Barbie doll could have put up a better resistance – and the US trained ‘moderate rebels’ have also been completely useless – of the original 500, 430 are dead and 70 are traitors. Only the terrorist units among the rebel seem to have been remotely effective sadly.
When you consider that this is no longer a Syrian Civil War given the number of foreign fighters, Assad is doing pretty well. What we’re actually seeing is crowd-sourced terrorism in Iraq and Syria, which has recently spilled over into Turkey.
It is not that US trained fighters useless. but US pick unreliable allies. see Egypt/UAE/Israel/Pakistan. These are the countries that US has spend fortune over past couple of decades. now they are ready with Russia for all bargaining. Russia put even Belarus and Ukraine on tight leash interms of military training, products and loans.

Every thing is top heavy. no cheapness. Ruaf is not aiming for LCA/Rafale/J-10/Tigre/Mangusta clones.
JSRActually Russian armed forces are just in the middle of a huge modernization program aimed of getting rid in the next five/six year of about the 70% of their legacy equipment.
So it make sense to send into an high intensity and equipment stressing operation the older machines that would in every case to be replaced in the very next year.+ a few very advanced ones for the most demanding task, obviously.
they need to bring advance choppers 30 to 40 atleast. its very target rich environment. they will prove more effective in picking up individuals targets than big bombs from jets.

Irak is complete failure. The country has become pro Iran that is radicalizing the rest of Arab world and Turkey as they consider it as loss of them.

I doubt any cold war era missiles are left in 2003 as most of them expanded in 1991 war and later conflicts. the point i am making is some countries have banned there flights due to there unreliability.

It is psychological by declaring these missiles as unreliable in operations so that the people of countries allowing it start protesting to ban the flights.

Given the amount of aerial shots being released, its obvious Russia is try to use the footage to demonstrate capability, but IMHO its really just shown a number of technology shortcomings.
it wont take too long from the result of ground operations will that will make effectiveness of bombing obvious.. some time bombs are droped in field if these people are outside or try to disperse them. for a second strike.

JSROn the subject of cruise missile failure/success rate, RUSI think that 32 were intended for launch, 2 failed to launch, and 4 dropped out of the sky prior to reaching Syria. That leaves 26 that got to the correct country.
They also say that these things cost $8 million each as opposed to $1.5 for a Tomahawk (roughly). Personally I think it is fairer to compare the success rate to Desert Storm rather than now given the level of experience/refinement the US has amassed since then.
Even Brahmos does not cost $8m a piece and that is only on dsyfunctional Indian production. things like MKI and Brahmos usually cost twice Russia production. This thing is not more than $500 to $600k at best. for export this may cost $3m to $4m.
