    Most people praise the agility and low drag configuration, obviosly you are of a different point of view…

    I never said it is useless. but it does not meet the standards of Russian and Israeli airforces. Israel is going to buy JSF. (Plenty of money and willling partners to ressurect 21st century version of Lavi)
    Russia after helping china with J-10 in 1990s has no intention of building some thing along those lines.

    This is priceless, what planet do you live on? I strongle recomment last issue of The economist, google any country innovation or creativity rating, country competative index, budget balance…..

    These are mostly useless surveys and have nothing to with unqiue and independent R&D needed for military industrial complex free from colloboration.

    This is getting even better, I just love the last line, (never mind Ericsson, Atlas Copco, Volvo, SKF, Astra Zenica, ABB, Skype, SAAB, IKEA, H&M….) You are great keep going!

    Those were swedish when they were small companies from garage. now they are colloborative efforts from across the world. and most of them have nothing to do with aircraft manufacturing. There is no unique titanium and composite manufacturer in Sweden. so it is highly unlikely some strong light weight and longer life materials and still can counteract high performance stresses on 5G fighters can be manufactured in sweden.
    Than there is domestically developed missiles technology and rapidly implementing changes incase it is compromised. I doubt sweden can create AAM without exteranl help and still wont be top of the line. as external help is always limited without domestic experiance base.
    Than there is lack of money for yearly procurement. how many prototypes of Gripen NG has been built in past couple of years. and its serial production is highly dependent on some export order and even if that export order materializes. the yearly procurement is not more than 5 or 6 and that couple of years into future. i think with this slow procurment most of experiance people will get retired or start some thing else. not easy to find and train new labor. This is not competivie and efficient way of building airplane. and you still have to import majority of components externally.

    Computing capacity is a tradable commodity in the FREE world..

    nope. . every supercomputer is uniquely tailored to use with unique software capabilities and it takse years of testing.

    Schorsch, please !!!! 😮 😮 … simply compare the dimensions ! It has surely a wider fuselage, but overall it is surely not “significantly larger” ?

    looked at the distance between engines and size of tail. It is huge aircraft. it is going to be slow, low cruising altitude and very short range due to being overweight/draggier. it simply cannot be effective multipurpose aircraft like IL-476 with tanker/AWACS variant.

    There is much more to Gripen and Gripen NG than meets the eye. It’s those classified features in combination with certain tactics that makes Sweden confident in the capabilities of NG vs. Su-35. Of course none of this was shown in the silly movie.

    Gripen does not have any classified features. It has the engine that is flying in superhornet for decades. so the power supply for various systems is known. and second it has obsolete aerodynamics beloning to 1980s. More likely comparable to Lavi/J-10. that belong to pre supercomputer era.
    I never heared SAAB installing new supercomputers or buying Japanese industrial robots.
    Sweden simply dont have any surplus money or technical power. even if it knows anything it cannot implement effective counter measures. as most of R&D in Sweden is for benefit of foreign multinationals. so there is no control over R&D to create unique un saleble product on vast scale.

    How do they know that the classified features of SU-35 don’t “trumph” the classified features of Gripen NG? It comes down to military/industrial intelligence. The Swedes has some good intelligence; sufficiently good that it bought them a seat with the Americans. By trading intelligence with other Western services they have a pretty good understanding of what level of capabilities those Russian a/c got.

    You need alot of money and bargaining power to trade intellegence in 21st century. Sweden has none. maybe 20 to 30 years ago when it has niche capabilities in R&D. first thing is you start with supercomputers for design.

    Isreal is foremost western military power interms of intelligence, training and neutralizing any thing West sold to Arab or Turkey. and Russia is giving boat load of money to Israel. and Israel need all that money to keep very high defence spending relative to GDP and still prosper.

    Same old same old is it JSR, i am in the mood so I will pick apart your fantasy assertions again:

    The Chinese appear to be prepared to spare no expense whatsoever in the modernisation of their aerospace and defence industry. They even purchased, overhauled and pressed into service an aircraft carrier that every respected naval analyst regarded as a rusty basket case. They have multiple new generation fighter programs, multiple transport aircraft programs, multiple UAV programs and are churning out new warships faster then any other country in the world at the moment. Hardly the signs of a country suffering froma lack of money.

    have u looked at there modest effort like ARJ-21?. and now nearly complete unification with Bombardier for C919. It does not look they are even contemplating risky projects on stand alone basis of very small technical ability. Creating multiple medicore projects create alot of opportunties for corruption. see L-15 example. how many in operational inventory.

    Well that is nice for the IL-476 I wish them every success on the other hand do you have direct contact with the Chinese government? The Y-20 program has been conducted in high secrecy and so far we have had some very blurry pictures of one prototype. We are in no position to draw any conclusions yet about the programs success or how many will be built. What we do know is China is desperate for more medium to heavy airlift partially due to Russia not being able to service the long standing contract for more IL-76. Anything you say about possible Y-20 numbers at the moment is pure speculation.

    There is not iota of secrecy with Y-20. Here on this forum Trident new about from very long time. it is just nothing to show so no one can see it.

    As far as I am aware the Peoples Republic of China does not work to a 10 year budget. They do reveal how much they spend on procurement but clearly hide their R&D budget. I am no expert but I am sure Deino would have a better understanding, but your assertion from this statement that effectively China is dysfunctional when it comes to its defence procurement is absurd! As you have already been told the JH-7B is still being procured because it fits a niche in their armed forces. It is an affordable indigenous strike platform that can carry all their latest precision munitions and also has some of their most advanced avionics.

    JH-7B with 1960s era engines is procured because yearly procurement is slow. we are on its more than 10 year production anniversary. how u know its affordable?. J-10 with imported engine is produced in far more quantity at similar time line.

    D-30 is cheap to procure and again fits a niche within their defence requirements, just because it isn’t state of the art doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. For the H-6 the D-30 represents a vast improvement over the previous engine and it allows the Y-20 to enter testing whilst the WS-10 derivative is further developed.

    do u know D-30 has way higher fuel consumption and way shorter life span than latest PS-90. (more than 10k continous hrs on wing). it does not endup as cheap for slightly long term analysis. or Chinese are using it so it must be right?

    Nonsense claim to stay polite. Nearly all of the mission time a Tu-22M3 is operated at ~ Mach 0,8. For a few minutes it has some transonic dash capability at medium heights to supersonic high-up. All the present stand-off weapons are speed limited by the related burn-time and thrust of the sustainer motor. Similar thing about the claim about the “turn-around time”. Briefing, debriefing and re-loading do not allow more than two missions within 24 hours in general similar to the subsonic designs.

    Your confusing 1970s era engine and maintainace with 21st century. You dont need briefing and debriefing for hours. every this is computer controlled. 300 hrs a year flight time is more than fighters. upgrade will reach 60 planes.

    China has to close many gaps in technology, but the investments into that will show up in the near future. They are patient enough not to mass produce dated military items with a limited value in the long run. There is no shortage of money to do so, but the time in need and the related experiences from that can not be accellerated by more money in general. Russia does still benefits from former gains but is unable from manpower and money to push it in a similar way like the Chinese.

    we have already seen what is expected to come up in future. Like J-20/J-31, Y-20, J-15/J-16. J-10B, L-15. couple of small UAV. There is clear shortage of money and technical ability that inhibit from creating a world class product. which is going to be more difficult to fund into operational numbers as China gets age with large obligaitons and rich people flee due environmental degradation.
    You will see 300 IL-476 but you will never see even 50 Y-20. every high tech aviation product. the gap is increasing. There is no 10 year procurement budget in China. thats why you see that dysfunctional spending on obsolete products like JH-7B in 2012. and still using obsolete D-30 engines in vast numbers for various products. when Russia everything is now going towards PS-90 modifications.

    Errr where did I say a Super sonic dash capability is not useful JSR?

    I said not as useful these days a statement which has a completely different meaning. Also in a later post I clearly state how the B-1B’s super-sonic dash capability has been highly useful in Afghanistan.

    On the other hand a stand off long range ALCM carrier doesn’t need to be supersonic to perform its primary task as proven by the B-52 and the Tu-95!

    B-52/Tu-95 role is increasingly taken by SSN which are now going to be equiped with 5000km cruise missiles. It is mostly for stationary targets.
    you still need speed for fastest and numerous ALCM delivery.

    supersonic bomber still give u quick turn around time for continous sortie generation. like fleet of 30 modernized Tu-22M3 can still generate 100 to 150 sorties a day. which at minimum 1500 to 2000 antiship missiles enough to overhelm any naval battle group SAM inventory.

    the same flexibility against insurgents on wider area. It is the turn around time that make a difference.

    actually rafale is also selected for carrier operations and is in use with french navy. mig35 hneed more powerful engine because the mig is heavier and larger so it needs more power to lift such a heavy draggy airframe. but it cannot supercruise so obviously not enough power like rafale or eurofighter or even gripen. j10 has aesa and modern avionics, can beat mig35 easily.

    Rafale is only one carrier and not too many fielded there.
    MIG-29K is chosen for 3 carriers. One Russian and Two Indian carriers. It is the perfect aircraft for carrier operations. MIG-35 is not draggy platform at all. It has higher top speed and altitude than all delta canard planes like J-10/Rafale/EF.
    It has large nose for AESA. and is in continous testing for past 6 years with 10 aircraft flying. It does not need Canards. It has option for TVC.

    because it mean china economy opens up it has more money and with more money it can put that money in research and airplane production. very very simple. thats why china produce far more aircraft than russia and has more design program going on. manyflankers have canard

    more money into research?. where is evidence for that. as i see output practically zero. China doess not produce more aircraft. Correct word is assemble with outside parts. Russia alone produces upto 300 helicopters per year.

    mig is much heavier and larger than rafale so it is very very draggy. beause its draggy it has to use more fuel to fly so it is shorter range than rafale. they had to add a spine to it to give it more fuel but it ends up being even heavier and draggier than before, so it does not solve that much problem.

    MIG-35 is heavier because it usese 20% more powerfull engines. It has larger nose to accomodate larger radar. and there is no evidence its draggy or short range than Rafale. infact top speed, climb rates (max altitude) with load will be higher for MIG. There is reason MIG-29K is selected for carrier operations. while Rafale/EF influenced obsolete design J-10 not.

    j20 has big volume inside so no problem on range. also its delta wing so more fuel.

    flanker is really mostly empty. it is just two long engine inlets on the bottom.. the top part only has nose, cockpit and a small spine.

    also the chinese engine promise much better fuel consumption than russian ones it used in the beginning.

    Delta wing has more fuel?. Does EF/Rafale carries more fuel than MIG-35/K despite having slightly larger wing area.
    J-20 wing area dont look larger than Flanker. It will take some time for Chinese to realize that it is unworkable design. I am not going into enormous drage of such platform along with weight penalty.

    china open up its economy in the 70s but russia had to wait until the 90s when the country crash to open up. so china has 20 year advantage ove rrussia in getting money, new technology, etc, etc. you can really see it in the design of the j20 and j31. they look like modern american 2000 design but pakfa looks like in between flanker and yf23 so somewhere in the 80s.

    what has economic opening anything to do with fundamental research.
    Canards is always late 1970s design. J20 heavily borrowed from MIG MFI. it is not new design.
    see this large canards, wing design, lengthed nose. Every thing you see in J-20 is copied except intake got changed.

    no, j20 bay is big they can fit some asm in there. j20 design to do almost all role and has the bay to do it.

    J-20 is size of Flanker with wing area looks slightly less. Any larger internal bays will come at expense of fuel capacity. and since Stealth fighters are always overweight it will translate into reduce range.

    A military tool is still useful as it is capable to do the main mission related to that. In both cases the combat is done by the state of art missiles and avionics carried. 😎

    missile and avionics alone cannot provide the flexibilty of a platform.

    It is still 1000 mission a year for B-1B. at total cost of $700m in afghan war. which is less than the price of total French libya compaign at far greater distance and more effective bomb load with loitering time flexibility even surpassing UCAV.

    China as the modern superpower surely does no need old bombers from Russia. When the time comes China will develop their own bomber force and then it will be the best and strongest in the world.

    China is not a modern superpower so it always need to resurrect soviet stuff. and it has great difficulty to operationalize newer designs such as L-15 which is 1990s design.
    Tu-22 has many advantages over Soviet era carrier. as it give flexibility of using 5tons to 9tons bombs. with modern avionics upgrade the weight will be reduced by 4 to 5 tons. so it is very modern and efficient design.
    and i wont rule out upgrading it with NK-32 engines whose production is going start not only for aircraft but trains. so there is economies of scale.
