supersonic bomber is expensive to buy and operate and easy to shoot down. too risky to fly. that is why us dont produce supersonic b1. also fleet of supersonic bombers is one reason why russia collapse in the past. too expensive to keep. even rich china is reluctant to put money in money draining project.

I know supersonic are expensive to buy and operate but they are much better than operating aircraft carrier with its hundreds of thousands of manpower to required to mantain and operate it with questionable value againt peer competitor and slow reaction time to events.
Also supersonic bombers are designed with greater capacity fuel tanks so one inflight refuelling gives it much greater range effect.
supersonic bomber has nothing to do with economic mismanagement. China will collapse without producing supersonic bomber.

“Taking into account the development of the whole aircraft family on the basis of Il-76MD-90A (including advanced tanker aircraft), we believe that the order backlog for these jets will reach 1 trillion rubles soon”, – Viktor Livanov said.

A large bomber with a Supersonic dash capability is not as useful these days anyway. The new H-6K with its D-30-KP2 looks far more useful as an ALCM carrier:

how is Supersonic bomber not usefull. It can act on real time moving target much faster at far distances. it give greater energy to missile launchs. and with higher powered engines it works as much powerfull EW and Survellence platform. It can escape better from fighters.
In bomber case low cost solution is not the right one.

Ohhh please not again that stupid discussion on “the J-23 is longer than … and as such a bomb-truck a la F-111” !

Just a simple comparision + a bit of math …. :diablo:

    r
From the pix it is atleast as long as FLanker. The rear of J-20 is touching the line. The Canards of J-20 are clearly bigger than Flanker. It will weigh more than than Flanker.

Order mix may change. but it is part of state support to create economies of scale.

Russia’s ministries to order 130 aircraft from UAC
According to Vedomosti, the Ministry of Defense will be the main customer, as it will decommission 80 civil aircraft through 2018.

All T tail transports look to have massive tails.

And I like how you can infer all of that with a glance at a photo, maybe all aerospace companies should hire you to give their designs a once over seeing as you seem to know whether a plane will fly the way they want via eyeballing.

yes picture are enough. its fate will be worst among the wider fuselage aircraft. See A400M, A380, C-2, An-70, An-124 relaunch. All these aircraft has significant difficulty in keeping cost down and keep production number high per year with relatively long certification process. Only C-17 was developed in low inflationary period of 1990s with stable multi decade orders. and there is not much use of C-17 beyond tranpsort. There is no high power AWACS and tanker version in wide use.

In case you didn’t read my post, the end point was that Y-20 probably won’t be challenging Il-476 for export orders any time soon. So I’m not sure why you’re suddenly so testy.

Y-20 cannot compete in Chinese domestic market as its engines are obsolete and airframe is cannot be certified in reasonable time. like in 3 to 4 years.

Btw Y-20s seemingly unwieldy tail is likely an effect of angle and the generally low resolution of the picture.

From the same angle and distance. the tail is exceedingly large. and engines look exeedingly small. Its dysfunctional design.

We haven’t got a decent side picture yet, and this CG is the closest thing we got (most likely made by someone who was actually there to give us a teasuer of the eventual real high res photos that inevitably must have been taken)
If this is accurate at all clearly its tail is not as large as you believe, at least it looks proportionally sized with the likes of C-17, Il-76 and A400M (not to mention C-2, which also has a massive tail)

The point is that this design is not so much multifuctional. it will likely have much lower speed and altitude. I highly doubt it has crusing speed anywhere close to 850km/hr. and with lower procurement per year. It will never achieve economies of scale for sustainable operations.

Wow JSR! You managed to work that all out from a series of blurry pictures where you can barely make out the tail let alone anything else…
    for the rest of us…

Tail is the most visible part. unless it is some photoshop.

ilyushin was nice plane but 1970s is over. better to use a fresh design than something with 40 year old inspiration.

There is nothing new in Y-20 but amalgamation of various designs. Nose Wings, oversize tail seems to me inspired from Antonov.

Plus, the RD-93 isn’t that cheap to maintain.
    .

RD-93 is alot cheaper to maintain than out of service Mirage engines. Even India which is spending billions on upgrading Mirages cannot afford new engines despite alot of crashes in Mirages.

Fortunately for the Russians, it will be a while before Y-20 finishes testing, not to mention the new high bypass WS-10, (I doubt the Russians will allow Y-20 to be exported with their engines) as well as the (hopefully) large order of this plane which the PLA places with hXAC probably unable to keep up a high production rate for both internal and external demand.

But in terms of the maximum achievable performance for Y-20 in the most important aspect for transporters (carrying capacity), it appears that it’s fuselage is larger and wider than that of Il-76 and engines for the moment will be the only limitation

have u looked at the tail of plane. It looks bigger than the plane. I can predict the plane will end up to be overweight/draggrier/low operational speed & altitude with short life span and will unable to fullfill most of mission requirements.
and IL-476 has delivery schedule of 103 planes before 2021. Not orders.

Sukhoi is now using today standards supercomputer. they may have come conclusion that full stealth has too much penalties on airframe for speed, agility, strike range. maintainability and ease of upgrades.
and than there is advancement in ground based radars like upcoming S500. so it is basically hopeless in that context.
so minimum they are doing is frontal stealth against tiny radars of fighter aircraft. PAKFA supposed to fly higher and faster than most stealth aircraft.

Specifically, what are these advanced building techniques so hard to master, that are employed on the Mistrals?

I hope the Mistrals will be re-evaluated and cancelled, but, seems unlikely 🙁 .

Its very good deal provided it start entering service from 2014. Carrying 16 attack choppers with troops is alot of capability and very necessary.

I don’t doubt there will be an element of that in the background, but I think it more likely that the Russians have realised just how far behind they are in shipbuilding techniques. The plan was to build the first two in France, with the French Shipyard providing technical assistance including training to the Russian shipyard staff so that they could press ahead with hulls three and four in the Russian yard. The first two are still proceding on time and will enter service as planned, but the Russianpair are being delayed because they realise they will need more time to bring their own shipbuilding capability into line with the French yards, and this it has to be said was the main reason for the deal. Being able to build modern warships to modern standards matters more than a couple of amphibs in the grand scheme of things.

your explaination is inaccurate. It has practically nothing to do with shipyard.
but looks to me they are waiting for operational use of first Mistral and than incorporate changes after first Mistral pass the sea trials in Russia conditions with Russian equipment in use.

The Defense Ministry denied a report of the Vedomosti daily that it has decided not to order a third and a fourth warship from France due to high costs of construction and maintenance.

    Welcome to 1980!

Thats exactly my point. Flanker is product of pre supercomputing era.and thos were not supercompute in modern sense but merely current desktop ability.

Even JSF is pretty old design vice. almost 15 to 20 years.

why they need 5 years for logsitic and training setup.
Tyhphoon is not much different than F-16Block 50+. it iss not some african country that is first time receiving new airplanes and possibly simulators for training.
