its not size of money but obligations of state to other priorities like facing 30 to 40million retirees in next couple of years. and budget cycle control by two year congress . see US losing fifa bid to qatar. There is no consensus of putting big money on single event for long term.
F-35 is in its sixth year of flight tests and yearly production is not above 30.
will not go above 30 for next couple of years. and if it does not go to 100 aircraft per year. Most of export customers will not be able to afford it. and even those who can afford it is stretching buying over many years. Only F-15/F-16 survive for such long span as they had export customers. The rest like F-117/F-22 funding didnot survive for too long even for upgrades let alone for active production.

In this regard, T-50 is indeed very originality, their desigin originality lies in the fact it looks nowhere near a true 5th generation fighter, but it can blend well with MiG-29, Su-27, F/A-18, F-15, F-16 generation of fighters.
To be honest if Russian throw out T-50 instead of Su-27, 30 years earlier, and someone tell you that it is the same generation of fighters as F-15, I bet few will even question about that claims, since they looks belong to the same generation of fighters.

J-9 are just paper design. There is no flown prototype. 30 years earlier engines were not powerfull enough for internal bays+lots of fuel and still get super agility TWR with long life span airframe.
I use the term operational in the lay sense. For IOC, I would use IOC. For mere show trials, they’re progressing rather quickly. Some people thought it would take years more for China to actually land a plane on a carrier. I’m not going to be one who says that China will have a fully capable carrier group ready in the next year. However, to assume they will never get there, or get there at a pace that maintains a capability gap with other countries, I think, would be naive.
how are the progressing quickly? by refurbishing 1970s era carrier with 1980s era fighter jet that was not built with supercomputers & CNC machines from start. THere is not only lack of innovation but lack of confidence. considering short trials.

What is not so imaginary is that China has caught up rather quickly, and has in the last two years constantly surprised many who have insisted Chinese military technology will advanced at a slower pace. You can simply assume that the J-20 is all looks and no show, but given the evidence and what we do know for sure about recent developmental trends in Chinese military technology its history, that interpretation does not seem compelling, especially when the argument is that China still lacks capability A or B. Where something was or is, is not always indicative of where it will be in the future.
All we have seen some low altitude flying at this point from J-20. there is no data about flight tests. and how many prototypes have been built?
If China weren’t capable of supplying its own engines it wouldn’t be flying flankers with WS-10s or testing the J-10B with WS-10As.
we dont know about lifespan/reliability/maintainability of those engines or even production process behind. (It may even cost $1m to $10m a piece). All we know that majority of k-8/JF-17 are exported with foreign engines.
We will see if China can build a reliable supercruising engine when we see what engine the J-20 has going into production, but to automatically assume that it cannot and will not succeed is grossly ignoring the pace and progress which China has advanced in military technology.
It is very correct asssumption considering China dont have that much success even in heli engines. only some low power short span cruise missile or UAV engines at best at this point.
This is indeed China we’re talking about, and in the last 20 years China has not only made generational leaps in its military capabilities, but has done so by moving away from reverse engineering to indigenous development. It would be silly to think that a country with 1.3 billion people and the world’s fastest growing economy would depend solely on reverse engineering to develop its own technological base.

US going forward will have alot less money for projects like F-35. as current election show the voting demographic change.and in next 8 to 10 years more walfare oriented canidates get elected to Congress. and this is inaddition to debt problem. Obama Chicago Olympic bid shows him that he simply cannot channel vast amount of money into one city that Brazil promised at that time. so projects with lot of money and less econmic impact will getting difficulty.
T-50 does not have this problem. Chinese will run out of money like Japan before it can put operational Stealth fighter.
Two year ago they didn’t have an operational aircraft carrier. Three years ago they didn’t have a stealth fighter design. Not having one now is poor reason to think they won’t be able to develop one later.
It isnt a operational carrier but mere show trials. Operational carriers spent couple of months continously with hundreds of takeoffs and landings with loaded aircraft. by same token it is design of stealth aircraft it does not mean it can operate as stealth aircraft against all kind of latest radars for next 40 years.

I can understand the Su-34 not having TVC – but the F/A-18 and the MiG-29 have flown with TVC for years – but nobody is interested in ordering any with TVC. Some of the world’s largest air powers have opted for TVC for some of their combat ac – but only for a minority of them.

what China know about Stealth level except copying a shape without regard to weight/drag/strength/life span of airframe. without strength there will be no supermaneuverablility with loads. overweight/draggier platform cannot supercruise.
It takes ages for ARJ-21/Y-20/J-15/L-15 to enter operational service in reasonable numbers. these very low tech projects when you compared it with 5G fighter. J-10 is made on time due extensive Russian assistance in 1990s. so instead of bragging about some replicas of 5G fighters you should be demanding corruption probe over J-20/J-31 whey they are even allowed to start. as these things will make China insolvent without giving any operational capability.

You dont need dog fighting ability at such altitude wider nose provide good survellence so less last moment turning. Most of flights are subsonic. 14tons of fuel is needed for 3300km range. Engine is not unique but more standardized D-30. I think it will still be cheaper to maintain than stealth fighter. Its a worth while upgrade with new missiles upto 280km.
The cruise speed would suggest that this is not a turboprop. So the An148 or the new Brazilian KC390 with turbofans must be good candidates.
There is low cost alternative An-178. that fit this budget.
