The SM3 still has the old N001 radar. How is that superior to BARS?
You dont need best radar in every plane.
SM3 will likey be working in group action mode with MIG-31/Su-35.
3 to 4 ton lighter weight with uprated engine, less drag of single seater will give it superior acceleration and altitude for BVR. and we dont know anything about EW suite. Radar is one piece. EW/Communication system is equally important.
They have three of them and it took almost 2 years to build those three production aircraft. I wouldn’t even call that serial production, not by any means.
Su-35 specifications may have been revised. as it is build as competitor to F-22.
Radar range is now more than 400km. so it could be 500 or 600 depending between export and Ruaf versions.

Заложенные в самолете потенциальные характеристики позволят превосходить все тактические истребители поколения 4 и 4 + типа “Rafale” и EF 2000, модернизированные истребители типа F-15, F-16, F-18, F-35 и противодействовать самолету F-22A.
i think there is 300 to 400 more fighter orders pending before 2020.
it says Yakhont/Brahmos type missile for Su-30SM for blacksea. http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/russia-confirms-30-unit-order-for-su-30sm-fighters-370055/
F-414 is designed to be the same size as F-404. Thats why they managed to fit it inside an old Gripen frame to build Gripen Demo.
why has Gripen NG the same weight as 1970s era F-16A/M2K that despite having 500kg lighter engine.
It’s not neglect. There’s a military arms embargo sanction against Iran.
THere was no embargo untill 2009. THey could have bought Flanker license like India/China in the 1990s. even the S300 deal was for older PMU-1 for paltry sum of $800m.
Russia is better off in using its critical workforce for building S400 for itself than on non serious approaches.
MIG-29K/Su-35 has RCS reduction measures at Sukhoi mentioned on web.
lol
http://www.vectorsite.net/avgripen_1.jpgI can guess the reply. “RBS 15 is not long range antiship missile is only 70km in 1990’s version compared to 250km YJ-83 for the JF-17” which entered service when exactly…
That exactly should be reply. JAS-39A radar was simply not capable to same extent as JF-17 when they entered the service.
Btw I don’t want to derail the Russian Aviation thread, so I’ll post this here too: http://www.shtokman.ru/en/about/
Why does Gazprom need Total and Statoil to help develop Shtokman field, if Russia is so independent and doesn’t need outside engineers. Explain why the Navy is buying Mistrals too.
Russia never claimed they are pioneer of offshore drilling infact landmass so large and gas prices so cheap that there was never attempt to develop such projects.
Gripen case is special it makes claims of quick cheap development with off the shelf components with capabilities of much more expensive planes. which is exactly what JF-17 represents. Gripen is low end plane thats why its concept is easily replicated by Chinese.
Read the first line of my post you quoted and reflect over that . ASRAAM ? UK haven´t bought Gripen ( yet ) , yeah i know its a shame Gripen was stuck with those crappy AMRAAM´s when anyone else had phasors and deathrays in the 90´s and 00´s.
developing radar in small size nose for exploiting range of AIM-120B is much easies task than some thing for AIM-120C7. as i said JAS-39A was pretty modest aircraft. you wont see long range antiship missile hanging from JAS-39A as you see under JF-17. and i highly doubt JAS-39A went on long range missions.
Gripen development is slow and long. and not cheaper than JF-17. JF-17 only has engine imported everything else from weopons to avionics are fully china developed at this point. possbly ejection seat could be imported. your simply not admitting that some one else have made cheaper and faster than Gripen a lightfighter.
If one look isolated on the defence industry in Russia, it are indeed focused on a few industrilized hotspots, Moscow region, Sibirian KnAAPO, ULAN-** and far-east Irkutsk region. These heavy eco-locomotives are widly spread from each other, they are quite compacted pockets of high-end know-how R&D factories. And very little infra structure in between them.
Also the high end defence industry in Russia will dominate the Russian economic growt for decades to came, if one disregard the Russian gas/oil revenues..
That a good portion of Russias defence industy are state owned or partly state owned, this does not mean they can’t be competitive vs western private firms like LM etc etc..
Just check out how monster companies like Statoil, which are build up by our state and partly state owned. They are pretty much our own eco-locomotive which drive our economy.
Statoil is wealthy firm but it does not mean it is not depended on imported equipment and imported engineering talent to run its operations. Norway is possibly only country in world where nominal GDP is twice of PPP GDP. so people are more living on welfare or paid more than for what they produce.
Russian firms have much deeper engineering strenght in there fields. The difficult part of Turkemnistan-China pipeline is built by Russian firm.

I was looking at Volvoaero they are hiring all over the places in world.
You wont see Salut-Saturn advertizing like hiring in India/China or any other country to build engines for Russia. THere is still level of independence from outside world that make things expensive. so it does not matter whether state owned or not.
Infact Su-30SM imported equipment is replaced at 150m roubles. this shows how cheaply and quickly the imported stuff can be replace. It i s not the price but how and where you built things.

LOL grasping straws at a golf green i see , i made no claims that Gripen had a faster development then other planes of same generation i just pointed out that they all had long journey from prototype to “finished” produkt ( well that what happen when you actually has to develop new tech and not just steal it through espionage or illegal copying) , fast cheap and subpar standard maybe is a good thing in China but it realy doesn´t cut it .
you gave example of other fighters with trying to prove that JAS-39A has faster time line of development when in fact JAS-39A is very basic fighters from 1980s. subpar standard? you have proof of Chinese light fighters being subpar against other light fighters.
I would also like to know wich plane i the same generation as Gripen that entered service fully developed with all its intended weapons and capabilities in place from day 1 , F-22 ? EF ? Rafael ? or any other plane made after 1903 , please educate me.
Nice googlefu by the way , heres one right back at you:
Holy **** man thats a lot of hits 😮
JAS-39A cockpit displays need to changed. It was not integrated with ASRAAM which was the modern WVR weopon in EU in 1999. At most it trailed with AIM-120B. which will be considerably shorter range than SD-10.
Defense projects in Russia have always been fundamentally tied to political and industrial standing (especially following collapse of USSR), so it is not surprising. Not sure where they got the idea that is it so disciplined and systemic.
It is less political the factories in siberia are building Sukhois with wages higher than regional but considerably lower than say St.Petersburg which is dominant political.when you compare to other modern projects like EF/JSF/F-18.where supply chain is well spread out around the world and have no relationships with previous generation.
http://www.volvoaero.com/volvoaero/global/en-gb/products/Engine%20components/military_engines/Pages/f135.aspx
I am pretty sure unifying cockpit design, engines, weopons and factory sharing Su-35 & T-50 will lower the cost and reduce training/maintainance costs.
NO WAY do you have a link to back that up 😀
Slow development of gripen ? Slower then say EF , Rafale or F-22 ? You know the cold war ended that kind of slowed things down . JAS39A/B had RB-15F , AGM-65 and BK-90 from the get go , no freefall bombs or rocketpods as SwAF was to fight stormakt röd with latest AA threat not strafe some internal uprising in say Tibet . And there is nothing wrong with Gripens kraschrecord / flighthour
Gripen development is no faster than EF/Rafale/F-22. These aircraft were far more developed at IOC. otherwise there was no need for JAS-39C.
second JAS-39C make use of resuable components to great extent like radar and engine. JF-17 and JAS-39C are in same boat. As i mention Sweden ability to improve Gripen will decline with time with increasing costs of lower production rates and higher prices of F414 engines.
http://www.dailyfinance.com/2010/03/28/ford-sends-volvo-to-chinas-geely-for-1-8-billion/
LOL i dont dispute that china can build fast and cheap 😀 Gripen Anno 1997 sure is more capabel than anything chinese to date , and JAS-39A/B has plenty of AG ordinance integrated.
JAS-39 is not A380 . Infact China has built thousands of light fighters of 5 to 8 ton categories. how many Gripen have crashed and how many J-10/JF-17 relative to numbers built.
JF-17 managed to fly to UK in round about trip of 20000km. that is pretty reliable with in 7 years of first flight.
There is virtually nothing integrated into JAS-39A except what we called short range bombs/missiles. Gripen development was pretty slow. the MFD displays of JAS-39A were smaller than JAS-39C.
http://www.x-plane.org/home/urf/aviation/gripen/
Air to air missilesIntegration of Rb 99 AMRAAM including test firings which started in 1998, is as of mid-2000 soon completed.
Sidewinder was fully integrated at the time Gripen entered squadron service.
8 G´s ? 750m landing run ? 15 years later ? Oh well , but its made in China so in it self THAT must make it superior like everything else with that stamp as we in the free western world know all to well 😀
read the slide carefully. it is > 8g. 3.5hrs endurance without refuelling, dual GPS/Glonass, GMTI in radar, max load >4000kg.
considering the cost and quick time line. first flight 2003 and in 2012. 50 or so built including prototypes.
Gripen 1988 first flight. how many built by 1997? and what was capability in 1997?. Most of ground modes came in JAS-39C.
Chinese are more efficient and effective and they certainly have more money, industrial chain and workforce to quickly produce newer versions. what is max external load of Gripen? as the links are showing 5.3tons total load?
it is already mention to built Su-34 nuclear deterent force. total 140.
