Spending say… $20 bn on R&D would eat up half of France’s $40 bn defence budget but only consume 3% of the $650 bn US defence budget
Its not French R&D budget but collecting money at EU level to fund R&D under France that’s why it is called Franco-German fighter. there are plenty of other errors in your post.
Every thing is at EU level to collect funds.

”We want the adoption of the directive on digital taxation by the end of this year. This is a clear red line for the French government,” Bruno Le Maire, France’s finance minister

Rafale has very slow export rate spreading over a decade. the cost of R&D and supply chain for 6G fighter will be such that it will not work with slow procurement of EU.
Airbus and Atar turbo prop cannot be exported without US permission. that give you idea that even less complex stuff the continent is depended on external suppliers.
Those issues are not fixable.
the time is now for French to withdraw from this project.

“I greatly admire those who, even before they know anything, say ‘We won’t sell any more weapons!’ They sometimes sell more than France thanks to their joint ventures.”
Threats on jets
German news weekly Der Spiegel reported on Friday that France had threatened to cancel a Franco-German fighter jet project unless it was allowed unlimited exports of the warplanes, even to countries involved in conflicts.
Poor Belgium… aircraft industry there is dead. One more victim of F-35
what choice left for them?. It is more than likely Belgium will be spreading procurement like Italy over number of years.

The source added that F-35 purchases would be “slowed” in order to spread out payments. Italy is currently planning to buy 90 aircraft.
it is just matter of time. All are in the same basket.

Never mind Italy, France faces its own fiscal showdown
The European Commission this week told France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Slovenia that their 2019 budget proposals did not meet recommended targets for cutting longer-term deficit cycles.

1) France still see the need of a fast and manœuvrable aircraft for its next gen fighter. Hence the sleek design unlike F35 or Tempest.
sleek design is faster/higher top speed with more range not necessary manurvable. but France hasn’t shown anything yet that it can implement sleek design combined with manuvrability aka advance FBW with TVC. so it is more than likely it will fail. and this thing may even starved money from upgrading current generation fighters like EF/Rafale. Even Belgium understand it.
It would not surprise me if sequestration strangled everyone’s readiness.
. by the time sequestration (5% impact a year)was implemented the energy, inflation, interest rates were at lowest. these are the key ingredients of of supplying low cost product and service from contractors. so how can removing sequestration in current high cost environment solve the problem when stealth fleet is much bigger in quantity.
F-22 also in 50%.
French are already giving ultimatums to Germany for money. This 6G fighter is beyond the financial and technical ability.

Also a common budget was necessary. Otherwise threaten a dramatic consequence.

Stealth only 50% readiness based on the news.
French if smart will realize soon that this project with Germany is unworkable.
I am referring to political support. I haven’t seen a single statement from Merkel (consider size of project if its a real 6 G fighter) about this project but she has plenty of statements about Battery production for electric cars which is just one element.
This thing has gone quiet .
it says range greater than 250km. no export version of S300 designed for such range. anyhow they will go quietly for orderly exit of Chinese .

It is capable of intercepting air assault weapons at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and hit simultaneously several air targets,” the minister said.
More:
it does not give confidence. I don’t think there will be 6G fighter produced in Europe. they better try luck with 7G fighter to make development time line extend.
