Unless they put high performance engines with corresponding fuel capacity increase and remove that bubble canopy to reduce drag. It will still be a mediocre fighter.
Even completely disregarding the source credibility, operating jf17 for SaAF makes little to no sense. They’ve been happy for decades with operating large planes. While they did use smaller planes, like F5 in the 1980s and 1990s, they’ve replaced them with larger planes and seem content with that decision. They certainly seem to have enough money not to require a two tiered hi and low air force.
So, unless saudi air force desperately wants to increase the number of its squadrons/planes but for some reason doesn’t have money to do it with larger, more expensive planes, I really don’t see how it could be interested in JF17.
JF-17 make a lot of sense when you look at economics. At current oil prices and capital flight from expartriates. they need the cheapest labor to maintain there systems with cheapest guided bombs from Chinese satellite network. I am sure if they want to buy Chinese UCAV systems. they will be using same weopon systems.
there F-15 hasn’t arrived on time and they always have to fight to get bombs in required quantity.
Those comments are equally applicable to manned aircraft, warships etc. Cost, weight and volume constraints may limit the amount of EW protection they can be given, and the effectiveness of any EW system against a specific threat or class of threat.
But that not alter the fact that (contrary to your assertion), self-protection EW systems are available for UAVs.
they have weak engine and insufficient payload. and practically no self defense missile capacity. no radars to see real time at distance. its all your opinion. they have no practical worth in real contested airspace.
The thing that strains credulity is that both of you view aircraft EW/SEAD/LO methods as static since the 90’s and air defense systems having made quantum leap in capability.
Both have advanced, if not in lockstep, in increments. The aircraft (while the airframes may be the same): have received or are about to receive enhanced EW gear, EA capability, upgraded ARM missiles, new standoff munitions. The LO aircraft are 30 years newer in concept and electronics from the first generation F-117. Nothing happens in a vacuum.
Btw Havaarla, I’ve no idea how old you are but the revisionist idea that the Iraqi air defense system was second rate in 1991 is a canard. It was designed by the French, included western and Soviet missiles and radar directed AAA, with hardened C3 facilities. Other than the Soviet AD system, it might have been the best integrated air defense system in the world at the time. The ease at which it was dismantled should give pause to the idea that a terrestrial anti access/air denial system can survive a concerted EW, cruise missile, SEAD/DEAD assault without a strong air based AWAC and DCA force to deny high altitude sanctuary to the attackers.
I doubt it was best design French system in 1991. how many fighters it down from Irak-Iran war with surface to air missile. how many fighters it down from that Israeli air raid. French are very slow in implementing export contracts. so the system may belong to early 1960s tech. they had this Mirage F1 deliveries in 1980s. technology wise they were one generation behind the teen series. and they really invested in Mirage F1 by ordering 100 of them.
Stealth cant progress as fast as airdefense systems. F-35 is mid 90s design and barely entering service now.
You are wrong – self-protection EW suites for unmanned platforms have been developed. An Israeli system being publicised during the last Farnborough Air Show was reported to be ready for production.
it depends what of unmanned platforms have the capacity to carry them. and how effective is that against all the threats. just disclosing some thing does not mean it can be widely deployed on all platforms and all conditions.
Ariel footage from Russian drones… I wonder how many still didn’t feel like having missile on the drones to take’ em out.
first you don’t need a drone to hit some footage coming from another drone. there plenty of methods of doing it both from air and ground.
there are many disadvantages of rapid introducing of UCAVs into Ruaf. UCAV needs smaller missiles and separate industrial chain to manufacture as they made of light weight materials and smaller engines ( I would rather dedicate labor to building smaller engines into missiles). so its big industrial disadvantage at this point when Ruaf is capitalizing with titanium built airplanes on larger scale with standoff of weopons and bigger bombs.
UCAV cant self protect. there is no AAM and self protection pods. In Syrian geography. anything can happen so practically planes has to be in air 24/7 with long range radars and self protecting AAMs. UCAVs are slow and need certain altitude for efficient operations. Su-34/Su-24 fly low and fast. not easy to track at distance.
I am sure you are awareat it USAF the pilot and drone operator shortage. they tried two things at same time. now the airforce is at smallest readiness as they have ever been and there is no AAM UCAV there. it cant do the dual role. it will take some years until robotic technology in manufacturing advance enough that swarms like UAVs can be built. Chinese have labor advantage and US can import unlimited labor for everything else and that free up labor for building UCAVs. no population control.
It does not need hundreds of flights. It’s end result of previous work on zhuk-ae. Plus computer tech now advanced enough to accurately predict results. It’s not radar development in 90s.
That still does not rule out what kind of target we are looking at 5 m2 or 3 m2 , in either case the 50% gain is impressive with just half the weight of Zhuk- AE
this will make MIG-35 lighter than MIG-29M. MIG-29M has twice the detection range of MIG-29A.

The fighter has multi-role, multi-mode “pulse-Doppler” type radar “Zhuk-ME” manufactured by “Fazotron-NIIP” Corporation. The radar is provided with the slot array. As compared with radars of the previous generation, “Zhuk-ME” has wider scanning angle in azimuth, twice longer target detection range, less weight and increased reliability. “Zhuk-ME” provides tracking up to 10 air targets with four targets simultaneous firing with missiles
Have you seen LM’s share price lately, looking at a 5 yearly chart the stock is up 208%…
There is absolutely nothing the shareholders have a problem with. The F-35 is a program that will keep giving guaranteed revenue and profit for at least the next 20 years and probably for 25 after that. They also knew winning the contract was always going to be at a fixed and relatively low margin of profit from the US Government. As with the F-16, the potential for continued export sales and after market support make the contract more than worth the investment.
every stock practically double in past 5 years and there significant buyback in that period. I don’t think this can continue next 5 years even with more F-35 deliveries.
The price did go down by about 3%
The price was forced on LM and they were negotiating for year for a plane whose components are known for past 10 years in production.
what about Su-34. they will be closer to 200 by the time 2020.
biggest risk to F-35 is that its built in Texas with suppliers spread out at many places. even with 57 aircraft buying cost is not going down. LM is not happy with the price. and every international buyer want to wait for post 2020 period.
Nice post Austin.
Only 150+ Mig-29 left in the inventory, Sounds about right. Here is a possible forecast, if true, which procurments program will get put on hold, delayed or simply canceled?
In an ideal world, Russia would continue with its planned modernization of the army and boost its ability to project power. But this isn’t an ideal world and its finances are far less healthy than even a few years ago. Thus, military funding will be cut by 1,000 billion rubles ($15.7 billion), or by approximately 30 percent,*according to the Kommersant newspaper, which is relying on data from the draft federal budget the government submitted to the State Duma at the end of October.*
In the revised calculations, overall spending on national defense in the federal budget for 2017 is envisaged at 2,840 billion rubles ($44.69 billion), or 3.3 percent of (nominal) GDP. Nevertheless, Moscow hopes to implement further reductions over the coming years and force it down to 2.8 percent of GDP by 2019.*
Why now?
So, why is Russia suddenly doing this? Well, there are three reasons. First, a Presidential election cycle is just about to kick off here, and Putin’s advisors may fear how maintaining the military largesse in the face of across-the-board cutbacks could become unpopular.
The fact that social spending will be be the only area to see an increase in 2017, and a sharp rise as it happens, backs up this argument.*

US special forces demand more resources, fewer missions from next president
Then there’s the lesson of the Leonid Brezhnev years. The last time Moscow found itself in a situation where resource prices collapsed was during the 1970s. Back then, the former Soviet Premier made the fatal mistake of becoming embroiled in an arms race with NATO, just when he could least afford it. And we all know how that ended: Defense spending reached 15-20 percent of GDP by the early 1980s and the USSR imploded a few years later.
While the Russian elite might enjoy the odd bit of sabre rattling, they are also not suicidal. Most of them grew up during the Brezhnev era and are fully aware of his mistakes. As a result, it’s clear how they are unlikely to repeat them.*And this bring us to the third likely reason.
Perhaps the Kremlin has simply had enough of all the tensions of recent years and wants to dial them down. What better way to destroy NATO’s over-bearing anti-Russia messaging campaign than by completely undermining it?*
this article is for good laugh. Russia interest is to increase tension with west not decrease. The more Russia deploy weopons against west the less West can intervene in Middleast and Asia. there will be slow down in procurement depends on Syria experience and how quickly new technology is incorporated into the weopons.
I will not be surprised if Ruaf procurement gets delayed as all that Syria experience will need to be incorporated into every fighter even though MIG-35 is not present there. It takes almost double labor to upgrade fighter than built new one.

At the end, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin instructed to take into account the experience of the use of aircraft in Syria, in the manufacture of multifunctional MiG-35, including weapons of perspective nomenclature of those that are currently being developed by Russian defense industry. He also suggested to consult with military pilots who participated in the fight against terrorism in Syria, as well as the command of videoconferencing and “make sure that the aircraft exceeded the US and other counterparts,” and take into account all the nuances that can manifest itself in extremely difficult conditions
LOL I laughed so hard at this. HAHAHAHAHA
Are you serious? So flying 3 sends a message, but flying 2 doesn’t. It has to be 3? HAHAHA
it seems China does not have that many flyable J-20 that’s why they remove the serials. Its all exaggeration and hype without substance.
Lets be realistic. China has many ways to send a message to other countries. They are very firm in defending their interests
but China also does it in a way that is more subtle and civil, than say, Russia
That is why when Russia does it, it gets sanctions and blockades
and when China does it, it steals away US allies like Philippines and Malaysia.see the difference. China doesn’t need to prove anything to you.
sanction?. Europe and Turkey are drinking more Russian gas.

Countries like Philipines and Malaysia are unfit to be allies with Russia. first they too far away too afford tourism in Russia. second they they don’t have the vast natural resources that make it profitable for Russian firms. Russia only interested in building high technology stuff that means it has no use for labor outsourcing.
