    FBW depends on control surfaces and other features to keep the airframe airborne.

    But that airframe must be an airworthy shape.

    FBW can’t make a square box fly. It’ll still need wings to fly.

    What FBW does allow is instability. Instability is natural tendency of a plane to move in a certain direction.

    For example, earlier fighters in the propeller age like the Sopwith Camel, the F-4U Corsair or the Kawanishi George had immense torque that pulled the aircraft to the direction of the spin of the radial engine.

    This was nice in a dogfight because it allowed incredibly quick rolls.

    OTOH, it was deadly to novice pilots who are not used to applying opposing actions to counteract the tendency and averting a spin at low altitude. Both the Camel and the Corsair killed many new pilots during landings and takeoffs.

    Now, in the modern age, instability is usually caused by purposely setting the center of gravity behind the center of lift which causes the plane to be highly unstable in the pitch (you plane will point upward unless you apply opposing actions.)

    FBW is used to apply the correct opposing actions in the plane’s lift and control devices (rudder, aelerons, tailplane, canards, slats, etc.)

    A stable plane will glide at natural state where the pilot would not be applying much control. An unstable plane without FBW will follow its natural tendency to roll, pitch or yaw.

    Without FBW, the Typhoon would be an uncontrollable mount. But that is not to say it is dictated by physics as “unflyable.” It only means that it is unflyable by human.

    Now, the flight of the bumblebee is actually calculated as being an impossibility. Luckily for this idiot insect, it doesn’t know about the laws of physics so aerodynamics doesn’t apply to it 😀

    erm bit of a daft question but i hope someone can supply a simple answer.

    Watching a DVD with a feature about Eurofighter Typhoon. The pilot talks about it being ‘Fly by Wire’ and without a computer the aircraft wouldn’t fly! Ive heard this said about Stealth. So how exactly does the computer keep the aircraft flying when ‘physics’ says it should drop out of the sky! :confused: :confused:

    Simple question i know but its been bugging me for ages…

    It’s not the physics that would keep a Typhoon from flying if the redundant computers all happened to die at once.

    It’s the inability of the human to keep it flying.

    This is a common picture… Both Bell and Sikorsky failed to provide a larger offer for light and middle class. Bell still tries to sell the same old Huey in partially new clothes (and the same old Cobra) while Sikorsky (Boeing) concentrates on the S-70 which is far too heavy for many countires and especially for civilian market. Apache has a pretty bad reputation when it comes to survivalability and the Delta does not help much better with its tremendous costs and testing problems (Hellfire).

    Sikorsky’s S-70 would probably be dominant in the Chinese market today if there were a steady source for spares. Sikorsky is still fighting to sell the S-92 to the Chinese civilian market (even though the S-92 has a Chinese partner.) The greatest fear is an American embargo since the S-92 could be considered dual use.

    The European share of the Chinese market – and therefore the world market since China’s projected need is over 10,000(!!!!)* helos in the coming decades – is dominant today.

    Eurocopter has a machine for every possible weight range current needed by both the Chinese military and civilian market:

    Light: EC-120, Squirrel
    Medium: Dauphin
    Heavy: Super Frelon

    So hundreds of Eurocopter-based machines from the above four and that doesn’t even include Eurocopter’s involvement in the biggest Chinese helo project, the 5/6 ton next generation program.

    The Mi-17 has done well in China with over a 100 sold to the PLA but the last order was in 1996 or 1998 IIRC.

    Kamovs would fill a niche as the onboard machines for the larger PLAN destroyers

    But Eurocopter looks like it would dominate the vast majority of the Chinese market from top to bottom.

    For the airliner market, Boeing has lost on 757, 767 and 777 series.. Except Japan you won’t really see many of these abroad the US, especially 757 and 767 are somehow inpopular. MDs are slowly fading away and no new models are coming, Airbus has really kicked a$$ with the A3x0 series. The 380 seems to become another Boeing’s funeral, this time for the heavy weight class, no idea if the Dreamliner will take the market shares back..

    Boeing was once dominant in the Chinese market. In fact, there were years when Chinese orders constituted up to 1/3 of Boeing airliners sales. But in the last two years, Airbus simply took over the Chinese market which is projected to be the second largest in the world after the US.

    The problem for Boeing in China is similar to Sikorsky’s problem. Boeing had the natural lead in China but has lost it mainly because of the possibility of embargo.

    The Dreamliner is make or break for Boeing now. It doesn’t really have a line outside the 7E7 that can outsell Airbus in the coming years.

    The ability of the 7E7 to sell in China** is crucial since nearly all growth in the carrier business is centered on new demand there, Europe and N. America being fully saturated.

    I expect the same to happen in the fighter class. Eurocanards should prevail, F-16s are goners, Eagles are taking their very last chances in Korea and maybe Japan (or the F-2 should burry any chances for multirole Eagles?) but it won’t take long unless US get clever enough to set the stealth characteristics for the JSF free. Raptor will be unreachable for 99% of world’s economics and the inpopular US embargoing policy won’t help to create the image of US as stable and reliable partner, as well.. And, finally, who needs a specialized $200mil air superiority fighter today? The artificial F/A-22 coding won’t trick those who know the situation.

    Actually, military aircraft is the one area where the US will continue its dominance in Asia. American military aircraft in China is not possible but US alliances with the richest nation in Asia (Japan, Korea and Taiwan) basically ensure that American planes (F-15K, JSF, new F-16s) will continue to be sold there.

    Of course, western embargos on China’s military aircraft market means this is the one space where Russian products have a chance. But any lifting of the European embargo and you’ll see far more buying from Europe than Russia. Eurocopter and Airbus aren’t flukes in China.

    I think the situtation of Loral and other US satellite makers will eventually affect other American aerospace companies like Boeing and Sikorsky.

    American satellite makers once dominate 80 percent of the world’s satellite market. But in 1998 the ban on sales of American satellites to China began and American market shares had plummeted to around 30% today.

    The embargo not only forced China to redouble its own satellite design and launch programs but forced it to adopt European standards and designs as well. The Gallileo and Double Star projects are direct consequences. The GPS system for China’s transportation network will be European based when by all rights it should American. The communications satellites for the 2008 Olympics will be Alcatel’s instead of Hughes.

    Losing the standards battle is much worse than losing sales to direct competition. European standards will ensure a generation of Chinese civilian pilots, technicians and engineer to grow up on European equipment. It means the Chinese will look first to Europe for any new product, relegating American equivalents to secondary considerations.

    It would be very interesting to see what happens in the coming years.

    Where did this story originated?

    Unknown sources? Or sources they made up?

    Sorry to be the first Chinese to actually respond to this discussion of a so-called Chinese article (which is written entirely in English.)

    AIDC explored an attack version of the AT-3 named the A-3. But it was never put into production.

    It would have been armed with anti-ship missiles as well as AAMs.

    Powered by two Garrett engines, it has a top speed of 550mph and a combat radius of around 1000 miles.

    It entered ROCAF service in 1984.

    Interesting plane there GD, good find. Do you think it would have done well in the Homeland Defence role (aka Hawk T.1A and Javlin)?

    Well, the J12 was envisioned for 1960s style “People’s War.” A J12 in every village to take off and overwhelm a technologically superior invading force by force of numbers 😀

    Purely defensive with extremely limited range which can’t be helped because of size. But it seems even the PLAAF didn’t think the concept would work since they abandoned it even though its test flights were pretty amazing.

    From Jack Collins’ great writeup on CDF:
    “The redesigned J-12 made 135 test flights, achieving a maximum speed of Mach 1.386 (surpassing the J-6) and showing sprightly acceleration, a takeoff run of less than 500 metres and a ceiling of 17,300 metres (also superior to the J-6).”

    The Hawk is probably closer in concept in being a (relatively) cheaper fighter. But the Javelin for its time was definitely of a higher order. The Javelin was neither small nor cheap if I recall.

    The Y-10 was another series of prototypes that flew but never put into into production. It was a civilian project mostly but a an AWACs version was envisioned way back in the 1970s and early 80s. Would have been China’s E-3.

    The J-12. This is probably the smallest dedicated AAM-armed fighter ever designed. It weighed only about 4000kg (meaning it could be carried by a J-10 or FC-1.)

    Tiny but it carried a cannon and 3 AAMs!

    The redesigned version in 1970 went Mach 1.3. There were 6 prototypes and several hundred test flights.

    It would have been the subcompact of supersonic fighters.
