The JJ-1. It was China first homegrown jet trainer and was to be the intermediate between the prop CJ-5 and the J-5/MiG-15s. But the PLAAF training regimen changed and pilots went directly to the two-seat MiG-15U.
The JJ-1 prototype actually flew in 1956. Its lead designer was Bushi Cheng and the team later developed the CJ-6A.

According to a poster on the Chinese world forum board: he was part of a group touring of Chengdu AC and were allowed to get up close and personal to the FC-1 prototype 01. The whole group was allowed to walk around it.
BUT the more interesting is that about 20 metters away to the left of the FC-1’s hangar they saw four or five J-10s filling another hangar but were not allowed to go over to them.
The author speculated that public unveiling is pretty close since they would not have allowed them to be seen even by chance before.

You tell the difference between the CJ-5/YAK-18 and CJ-6 by the fully retractable main landing gear of the CJ-6 that folds inward towards the fuselage.
The CJ-5’s follow-on, the CJ-6A, has a large following in the US but I would doubt there are 200 CJ-5s in here.

You hit the nail on the head! One on One all pilots in similar aircraft are essnetially equal…So what gives one nation the edge? Better technology or more numbers. Look at History, the Battle of Britain, Early Pacifac War, The Zero far outclassed anything the US had, If you looked at these battles as many on this forum do, By comparing aircraft, ranges, bomb load etc, the outcomes would have been much different. The key to victory (the ultimate objective) in the Battle of Britain, was the use of Radar, and the “fighting spirit” of the RAF!!
The Luftwaffe at the Battle of Britain fought with two glaring equipment problems in a bombing campaign and then a fatal change in strategy.
And it was still a near-run thing. The two equipment problems were the horrendous shortleggedness of its escorting fighter force and the lack of a heavy bomber needed to put as much bombs as possible on each dangerous trip.
The consequences were these:
1) Amount of bombs on target was low which 2) necessitated more trips by light bombers which 3) were escorted by Me109 with barely 15 minutes of flight time over Britain, almsot always leaving the bombers unescorted exactly when the fighters were needed.
The Luftwaffe ended up losing one-third of their air force, 1,100 out of 3,200. Still, they were on the verge of defeating the Brits by bombing the RAF air fields before Hitler changed his mind after a RAF nighttime raid on Berlin (now that was a nice long range raid by adequate bombers :D)
By changing from the RAF air base to bombing cities, the Germans went from a clear strategy (which was to kill the RAF by destroying its bases) to hoping on the Brits to give up under bombing of their civilians. Bombing civilians only reinforced resistance.
Radar had a great effect in warning the RAF to get off the ground early in the war before the German bombers could hit them on the ground but it wasn’t the deciding factor.
Improper equipment and a wobbly commitment to a sound strategy doomed the Luftwaffe.
If the Germans had operated the Betty bomber/Zero fighter tandem at the BoB, the fighters would have escorted bombers from one end of England to the other like the P-51Ds did with the B-17s in the end of the war. The Luftwaffe in reverse were attrited to nothing by US fighters.
In the Pacifac war it was the fact that within 2 years the US had designed and built in huge quantities better fighters to take on the Zero..These one on one comparisons don’t hold alot of weight.
The early Pacific war was the only time that US fighters took a beating in kill-ratio. Head-to-head fighter fights in the Philipines and Midway were something like 10 to 1 in favor of the IJN air force.
Guadacanal was the place where US fighters first held their own (the Flying Tigers held their own much earlier on but they fought under a foreign flag.) A big part of that was the Japanese, because they lost the air base at Guadalcanal, were flying at extreme long range while the Americans fought directly from the island.
So what have we learned? Distance and location were as decisive as equipment.
By the way, US equipment, even at that time, were vastly superior to Russian 🙂 The Brewster Buffalo, which was slaughtered by the Japanese Zero and quickly dropped by the US, killed Russian planes to the tune of 489 to 16 (30:1 kill ratio) in the tiny Finnish air force.
So the kill ratio of US aircraft against Russian was ALWAYS horrendously high. The Cold War years were no exception. Historic precedence has shown us that the surest way to a massacre is placing a Russian warplane against an American one.
Exercises between countries are first and foremost, diplomatic gesture. The intent is to say, “we don’t regard you are a threat and therefore we are here with you.”
The spin that comes from the reporting of such exercises is what makes it a plead for new equipment like the F-22s, not the exercises themselves.
As far as spending millions on an exercise. The US military spends far more millions on its own exercises. Flying to another country on a dilpomatic mission is no more expensive than for an US carrier to “show the flag” in a foreign port. In fact, the weekly operating costs of an US carrier patroling off its homeport in Japan would dwarf whatever costs needed to prepare an exercise of a half dozen planes with another nation.
USAF/USN exercises expending live ordnance would cost infinitely more than exercises where shots are called by radio (absolutely doubtful that electronic tallying of ordnance is done outside an American or NATO range – like Fallon – on a first time meeting where both sides are using different weapons which are not open to the other side.)
I think the Japanese are still a bit shellshocked over the FS-X/F-2 ordeal. So the JSF program, of which Japan is an early participant, is the mostly replacement in their future. The F-22 might come into play if they feel the Joint Strike Fight is not able to achieve th air dominance role.
I don’t see any moves towards a new homegrown project in Japan. It would be interesting to see what they could come up if they were left to their own devices. The same with S Korea and Taiwan.

When the Japanese decided to design its own aircraft, it was during the “Japan, Inc.” scare period in the US 1980s when Japanese cars began their takeover of the US market.
There was tremendous pressure then by members of US Congress to make sure that any project Japan took under the FS-X specs would involve components from the US. It was even linked to access to the American car market.
Well money never seem to be an issue. They completely redesigned the F-16 and payed something like $110 miljoen a piece for them against $40 -$45 miljoen for an F-16.
You know that the original FS-X had nothing to do with the F-16, right? It was basically a political decision to use the Falcon as a base.
The US held one other trump card aside from the US economy upon which Japan’s lifeblood depended: Japan didn’t have a suitable engine. So even if the Japanese were willing to risk bad blood in the US Congress, they would still have to spend years developing their own engine.
The Japanese were basically in an untenable situation. So General Dynamics was given 40% of the project. And GD made the F-16.
So what we see today in the F-2 is nothing like what the Japanese initially envisioned in the FS-X project. Imagine Saab being forced by the US to take a large minority partner for the JAS-39 or it wouldn’t get the F404. The Gripen might have looked like the F-16 too if that have happened 🙂
Sri Lankan Jets in Pakistan
The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra i currently overhauling the Sri Lankan Air Force fleet of Chinese jets. The three Chengdu F-7BS, single Guizhou FT-7 and two Shenyang FT-5s are being worked on by the F6 Repair Facility, which specialises in overhauling Chinese aircraft for the Pakistan Air Force. All the aircraft are expected to be shipped back to Sri Lanka by late June.
