A mad dash to Mach 2 on MiG-21 would render the plane with a combat endurance time of minutes. A similar problem were reported for the original IDF with twin afterburners on to hit top speed. The original Garretts were unable to supply much thrust in military.
The fact is the original Garretts were engines designed for jet trainers.
That said, avionics and AA weapons suite of the F1-CK was probably the best in Asia during the 1990s. A fire and forget weapon in the TC-II and an all-aspect infrared dogfight AAM in the TC-1. Both entered service in 1989.
I’d say the IDF II has a pretty mature radar/AAM set today. Still amazing to think what would have happened if the ROC had continued with its aviation industry.
I personally think that this missile had a lot of input from China, but it is up to you to prove how much of it is Chinese, not for Pakistan to prove how much of it is Pakistani if Pakistan is saying they made it by themselves and no one else is coming out to claim that Pakistan is ripping-off their work. The burden of proof is on you.

There is little doubt that the father of the project is an American Tomahawk. Tomahawks were recovered in Pakistan not China.

Interestingly, even after the Minister clarified that the report in The Island was “wrong,” the newspaper followed it up with another editorial on Friday questioning the Government’s decision to install a hotline for the public to convey information on the sighting of any suspicious object in the sky.
The newspaper wrote: “The biggest problem is [the] absence of [a] sophisticated radar to detect intruding aircraft. The government is wary of going for the best equipment from China — a 3-D radar system — because India perceives it as a threat of sorts… How can the SLAF win a derby with a donkey?”
It added: “Successive governments have deprived the people of many things because of the war. The only solace available to the people today is a good night’s sleep, mostly on empty stomachs. It looks as though the Government is going to rob them [of] that comfort as well by urging them to function as human radars at night.”

The FC-1 has better overall performance. Reports (at least the early ones) about the F1-CK complained mostly of two things, the high cost and the low top speed.
The updated F-1-CK probably has an edge in avionics. The original Golden Dragon radar on the F1CK has 60 km tracking and 150 km detection range with two target engagement.
In a pure dogfight the FC-1 probably has the edge. In a BVR engagement, probably the F-1-CK with the four ARH AAMs and a most mature radar.

SLAF headquarters and its air base in Vavuniya began tracking the fleeing Air Tiger aircraft. The SLAF scoured into the sky a Chinese built K-8 jet trainer, which has night flying capability, to intercept them. But it was more than 20 minutes later. Both SLAF headquarters and its base in Vavuniya found much to their chagrin that the two aircraft had gone off the radar screens somewhere in the skies above Mannar. The K-8 had to be ordered to return to base. The use of Kfirs or the recently acquired MiG 27s to intercept the two light aircraft was not possible due to a number of important reasons. Despite the very heavy investment of public funds, they lacked some features. For obvious reasons they cannot be spelt out.

The only reason that the radar is in question is because it didn’t detect the an air strike by a couple of civilian prop planes. If it were working properly and online then it would not have been mentioned.
As for the malfunction part or being switched off part,its very natural.There isnt any piece of equipment on the face of this earth which doesnt malfunction.
It’s very natural to turn off your radar at night when you most need a radar and during time of war?

The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) yesterday charged that the negligence on the part of the government, sub standard radar system and anti aircraft weapons given by India had prevented the air force from hitting back when the LTTE attacked the Katunayake Air Force base.
PNM President Gunadasa Amarasekera told a news conference that India had prevented Sri Lanka from getting a sophisticated radar system from China.
Thats just the SL Gov looking for a scapegoat.

If there’s an enemy attack and the civilian radar picked up the inbound aircraft but not the military radar for whatever reason, who is to blame?
If it were turned off, it was turned off because?

People actually saw the LTTE plane coming and yet the radar cannot be made usable.
No matter how you slice it, it’s bad piece of equipment. Whether it’s malfunctioning in the midst of war and can’t be used or it cannot detect a small plane that the civilian radar could pick up.
And the radar is Indra II not Indira II.
It was incorrectly named in the Indian press trying to excuse the radar not the Sri Lankan press blaming the radar.
It seems Sri Lanka had originally looked at a more advanced radar before agreeing to the India system under political pressure.

POPULAR SINHALA NEWSPAPER REPORTS ON THE MALFUNCTIONED INDIAN RADAR SYSTEM AND SAME DAY ARRIVAL OF AIR TIGERS

Sri Lanka’s popular Sinhala language newspaper ‘the Divaina’ said that there is a probability that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was working with a mole planted inside the main Sri Lanka Air Force base at Katunayaka in the attack by the Air Tigers.
The newspaper in its lead story said the light propeller driven attack aircraft arrived above the airbase on the same day the radar system of the air force was turned off for repairs.

Meanwhile the editorial of the newspaper of the same day accused India of selling an outdated radar system to the government under pressure while Sri Lanka was negotiating for a radar system from the People’s Republic of China of the 3D variety. The newspaper said the Indian radar system has been malfunctioning ever since and even on the day the LTTE attacked it was out of commission and under repairs.
The editorial alleged India forced on Sri Lanka as a big brother the malfunctioning outdated system putting out pseudo reasons of regional security with clumsy arguments against buying the Chinese one in 2002.
The strongly worded editorial said the only good thing the country got from India was Buddhism and almost every other thing the island nation received like Indian expansionism , Prabhakaran and Indo-Lanka Agreement was laced with nothing but venomous trouble.
The editorial said Prabhakaran was a pathogen introduced by India and the meaningless Provincial Council system was manufactured to sell to Prabhakaran for appeasement.
The newspaper sarcastically said, the Indian radar system should be melted into iron and should be put for better use by manufacturing mammoties for the rice farmers.
The SLAF actually had information that the LTTE aircraft was coming and the Indian radars were still unable to detect the aircraft. It took a civilian radar from BIA to actually detect the LTTE plane.

Speculation is that LTTE aircraft which carried out Monday’s attack on the Katunayake airbase survived some 400 km of flying distance and that too at night due to deficiencies in the SLAF radar.
Initial investigations revealed that the first generation radar installed by India failed to detect the incoming aircraft until the radar at the adjacent Bandaranaike International Airport identified them.
“The detection was made as the aircraft were about 3 kms off the airbase,” a senior defence official said.
Had the SLAF radar spotted the intruders, the outcome of Monday’s encounter would have been different, he said.
Before the detection by BIA radar, the SLAF had received information about the LTTE aircraft crossing the northern-line-of-control through ground based sources. But the intended target was not specified until the BIA radar picked the enemy craft approaching the airbase.

China to build 93,000-ton atomic-powered aircraft carrier: source
China has been pushing ahead with construction of a mega-sized nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be completed in 2020, according to a Chinese Communist Party’s dossier.
A source close to Chinese military affairs said on March 27 that China has been promoting the construction of a 93,000-ton atomic-powered carrier under a plan titled the “085 Project.” The nation also has a plan to build a 48,000-ton non-nuclear-powered carrier under the so-called “089 Project,” added the source.
The source made such remarks based on government a dossier that reveals that China’s Central Military Commision recently approved the two projects. The dossier also contained specifications of the aircraft carriers.
China had so far been known to be pushing ahead with construction of a non-nuclear-powered carrier, but not an atomic-powered one.

The dossier said the construction of the nuclear-powered carrier will be completed in 2020. China State Shipbuiling Corp’s Jiangnan shipyard located on Changxing Island near Shanghai, will be responsible for its design and construction. The size is similar to former Soviet’s unfinished atomic-powered carrier Ulyanovsk, the dossier states. China reportedly secretly purchased the design of Ulyanovsk from Russia. When the nuclear-powered carrier is finished, China will own an aircraft carrier which is on par with the U.S.’s newest of such vessels, the 97,000-ton atomic-powered USS Ronald Reagan, which recently docked at Busan Port to participate in a joint exercise between the South Korean and U.S. militaries.
According to the dossier, China plans to construct a non-atomic-powered carrier as a transition stage to building the larger nuclear-powered one. The non-atomic-powered carrier, due to be completed in 2010, will be a mid-sized carrier with a standard displacement of 48,000 tons and a full-load displacement of 64,000 tons and will be able to carry 30-40 Chinese-built J-10 fighters, which China fielded in December last year. The Chinese authorities are reportedly overhauling J-10 fighters to be loaded onto the new aircraft carriers. Until the work is complete, the new carriers are going to handle 10-20 Russian-made Su-33 fighters.
The non-nuclear-powered carrier is reported to be a revised version of Ukraine’s Varyag, which China purchased in 1998. A shipyard in Dalian is in charge of its design and construction. After the new carrier is completed, Varyag will be used for military training only.
Remarks made by Zhang Yunchuan, Minister of the Commission on Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, to reporters after the National People’s Congress (NPC) on March 16 – “The construction of an aircraft carrier with China-developed technology will be completed by 2010” – support the dossier’s information as reported by the source.
A general-ranked official at South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense said, “China’s plan to push ahead with construction of atomic-powered aircraft carrier has not been widely known. However, it is sufficiently to predict that the nation will ultimately pursue the ownership of such a vessel.”
