China’s Air Force equipped with domestic-made new-generation fighter

Sources with the Air Force of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said Friday that it has been equipped with China-made new-generation fighter aircraft, the Jian-10, or Fighter-10.

An Air Force officer told Xinhua the force’s “overall battle effectiveness has been noticeably enhanced” after being equipped with the aircraft and through intensive drills and training.

He disclosed that Jian-10 was capable of launching “precision attacks while hedgehopping and making long-distance assaults at altitude above 10,000 meters”. Air fleet drills have also been successfully carried out, he said.

The Information Office of the State Council also said on Friday in a white paper on national defence: “The Air Force is working to build an ‘informationized’ air fighting force with both offensive and defensive capabilities.

“It is reducing the number of combat aircraft, giving priority to the development of new fighters as well as air and missile defense weapons,” it said.

The military sources have never revealed the specifications of Jian-10, but foreign observers have said it is comparable to mainstream fighter aircraft in the West.

Manufacturing has ALWAYS been the organization and marshaling of resources along with the ability to leverage “design.” Design comes from the ability to leverage your infrastructure. Designing abstract that your infrastructure cannot support is nothing more than dreaming.

Whether it’s aircraft, ships or automobile, China is among the few that create those in huge variety and number. The whole idea that “copying” designs means a backward industry is ludicrous considering that in all three industries, but especially aircraft and ships, are set up in scale by only a select few nations.

And aside from the so-called copies (nearly all of which is built in China), the number of indigenous aviation projects in China are greater than any country outside the P5.

J-10 in AVIC colors during the Zhuhai airshow (plane was in Chengdu not Zhuhai) and FC-1 prototype 06 still in primer.

The only one reporting this is the US military. It was the same with the Han class SSN that tailed another carrier a few years back. An indication that this happens on a regular basis.

So sounds more like a US Navy ploy to get more funding than anything else.

EdLaw, extremely good point you’ve made! I’d almost be 100% sure you’re correct on that. I was wondering why they’d be using M-16 lookalikes, and uniforms, etc. Pretty interesting, and disturbing at the same time. :O

I’d bet it all on the point that they might be training to infiltrate the new Iraqi army, somehow; and/or pose as them and kill civs to make the Iraqi army look bad. 🙁

You can’t infiltrate the Iraqi army with a M-16. The Iraqi Army uses AK-47s from Eastern Europe and, mainly, China. Their body armor and other equipment are from China and former Soviet republics and client states too. Yes, those purchases are approved by the US.

The US is not arming the Iraqis with $1500 M-16s but $150 Chinese surplus and new Norinco Type 56s (which were banned from the US market in the 1990s.)
