China may have flown the J-18 “Red Eagle”
First of all I thougt this type of “secret project” is better known as “Snowy Owl” !
However – even if I’m a great enthusiast on Chinese military aviation – I think we should not overestimate it.
A closer look to all these projects would give us a list of…
– FC-1/JF-17 – WS-13 integration
– JF-17 stealthy – development
– J-10 – preparation for serial production B + WS-10A integration
– J-11 versions … and here SAC seem to follow the original Sukhoi-way, where each and every new model would be a new type 🙁
– J-11BS/BSH – simple trainer version
– J-15 – “simple” carrier version
– J-16 – reportedly “Silent Flanker”
– J-17 – reportedly carrier capable “Silent Flanker” or this Su-34-like thing ?
– J-18 – reportedly this “Snowy Owl” stealthy JSF-type
– J-19 – reportedly a SAC stealthy fighter bomber based on their failed XXJ-submission
– J-20 – we all know it by know 😀
– J-21 – reportedly single engined JSF-type from CAC
… and then all the other types like helicopters, Q-6, Y-20 ….
I think we are all impressed bei their latest archievements and surely we shouldn’t underestimate them … but they also have a limited budget and capability and IMO all these rypes are way too much even for China !
But anyway that’t the thing that makes that topic so interesting … we surely will see …
