No official claims open the door for guesses from everywhere about that. The future replacement of the J-10 f.e. will be multi-role too. So much about the statement from CAC. 😉
Agreed … but then I don’t understand Your paost or was mine so misleading ? 🙁
Regarding that “thing” from Hongdu … I’ve seen this 2concept” about one year ago … so I think it’s again only some fan-art.
Deino
How about the reports from CAC and the PLAAF and the basic technical specifications of the J-20 and the mission it will have in the future. 😉
First I said “most” … and I meant especialy those in several news magazines (like below) …
…”When you see it [the J-20] you will realise that at least half of this aeroplane is of Russian design,” …
… and second maybe I’ve missed something, but where did CAC or the PLAAF publish anything about “the basic technical specifications of the J-20 and the mission it will have in the future” ?
All I know so far is a statemet from CAC (can’t find i at the moment) stating that most future types will be multi-role.
Deino
:diablo: 😮
@ media hype and “strange reports”
Sometimes I have the feeling, that these strange ongoing discussions, that media-hype and these sometimes – or better to say in most cases – more than stupid repoorts in serveral news-agencies and so on was the main interest behind the “unveiling” of the J-20.
Now the guys at CAC can go back to work and those from the PLAAF can sit down and will always have a good laugth about some posts.
Deino :p
Mr Hobbes,
so who is not convinced? pics of the WZ-10 were out years ago.
Yes I know but if I remember correctly, the some individuals are here still making fun of it ! So do I. 😀
CHeers
Hope now are all convinced !
Thanksfor Your reply … and IMO its complely possible, even if I think the J-20 is at least planned to replace the Flankers in the high-end elite regiments but I think it’s still open how many can be afforded. As such the J-16 – if ever succesful – could well be a suitable sucessor to the other Flankers.
Besides that I agree with You there’s a lot of potentialin that design as a striker of fighter-bomber and even an official CAC statement suggested that all future fighters have to be multi-role platforms.
Besides that I think that SAC still tries o catch up against CAC to get its own share from the pie … and again it has to be seen, if CAC can really hndle that many projects (J-10 serial manufacturing, J-10B testing + maybe preparing for prod. JF-17 production, UAV-development, J-20…), in parallel.
Anyway these are more than intersting times and I will eagerly awit the next unveiling.

Apologies if I seem a little dim on everything related to Chinese Military Aviation – most of what I read of the subject comes from the excellent articles published in the summer in Combat Aircraft Monthly.…
Thanks a lot … they were written by me ! 😀

Thanks a lot for posting !!
However I would have preferred a more wrap-around scheme …
Anyway a nice bird.

I believe there are two different companies (SAC and CAC) working on different prototypes, just like LM and Boeing are working on different prototypes.
If SAC wants to get a slice of the future Chinese aviation market they probably need to come up with their own “4.75” or 5. gen fighter, if not their competitor will take it all.
Not exactly … I expect something slightly different. It could well be that the J-16 was/is a fall-back-option from SAC if the CAC would fail, but IMO it is simply another Flanker-update since the J-20 will surely have even for Chinese standards a high prize-tag. As such only limited numbers might be purchased as a “Silver Bullet” for a few elite units and the J-16 could be purchased in larger numbers for regular heavy fighter regiments.
IMO SAC’s contender for the XXJ was labled J-18 or maybe J-19 and as far it is rumoured by some big-shrimps they proceeded with one of them to propose the PLAAF an as yet unfoundet fighter-bomber type to supersede the JH-7.
BBut who knows … ut will be surely more than interesting and IMO the next unveiling we should expect is the Y-20 transport from XAC.

May I ask why ???
IMO these two pictures – including several others – even if of quite a good quality are much too small (by pixelxpixel-size) to show such all-important details like panel-joints, access-panel- or weapons-bays doors much clearer …
Deino
Impressive plane/ achievement. Though on a cautionary note it appears on at least 2 pictures of the 1st flight, the pics have been unquestionably manipulated.
Can You tell us, which two ???

15 January 2011:
J-8II.
PLAAF or PLAN.
About 9:20 AM, crashed or crash-landed, at a construction site, near Fo Shan AP, Fo Shan, Guang Dong Province.
South side of construction site of Nan Hai Heng Gang section, Gui-Guang high-speed railway, north of Fo Shan AP.Two pilots climbed out before aircraft caught fire.
10+ fire trucks came to extinguish fire.

Two pilots in a J-8II ??? … then more likely a JJ-7 or a Su-27UBK … even if the picture looks really more like a J-8. The yellow number however is clearly from the PLAAF.
EDIT: new pictures found … it’s really a J-8 from the 9. Division !

That comment wasn’t directly at anyone specifically, just an open question to all those who insist it doesn’t have weapons bays.
What possible reason is there for it not to have them?
All anyone can say at this point is that there are no pictures that show the J20 with weapons bays open.
To go insisting that there are no weapons bays when there are multiple photographs showing panels where you would expect weapons bays to be is not logical and suggest an ulterior motive.
AMEN !!!
Exactly, there is of course what appears to be a few panel lines here and there, perhaps serving as place holders for where bay doors will be but currently there are no actual bays or bay doors.
What makes You so sure of that ?? I agree with You that I have no proof, but there are panel lines closely resembling w-b lines, exactly on the place were they are expected to be. Only since we havn’t seen them open to say it has no is really only wishfull thinking (which in turn You might accuse me now !).
But it’s the same with the engines: Ohhh China can not built a good powerplant on their own , so they try to fool all of us by painting the AL-31F’s feathers in a fancy silver colour with zigg-zagg edges so all the China-Fan-boys – esp. Deino – will immedeatly cry out: Look they finally have a reliable engine !
Some on …
