Do note Jane’s also quoted Russian source. There is still high chance that the prototype again may be powered by Russian engine, whcih makes russian source somehow reliable.

As for your “rumours” commenet, hey, I got a track record of starting “rumours” in this board ;). as early as 2004/05, we were speculating WS-10A, J11B, WZ-10 etc. any of them is NOT a rumour then?! but today, no one will think it is again. because it’s reality. today, the chinese information channel is much open compared to 10 years again, the PLAAF depute chief has already confirmed IOC of J-20 by 2017, that’s NOT a rumour and what we can expect now really perfectly fits the timeframe of the roadmap

Agreed … and (sorry for being misleading !) for me these are NO rumours – like You said – that these projects are all real. The only thing maybe regarded a rumour is “when” and “maybe even this year”.

Jane’s reported today in the article: ….

Sorry, but Jane’s “re”-reports only things which are said (or rumoured) since months in several Chinese forums, esp. Huitong posted this long ago.

But anyway You are correct .. let tzhe speculation begin …. but I hope for something like that!

Hardly surprising anymore. Sources indicate that the MiG-29K induction experience is proving to be a real nuisance, with the Russians nitpicking over contractual provisions and delaying smooth operations at the Black Panthers squadron in Goa. I’ve been requested by my sources not to put down the precise nature of the problems, though suffice it to say that the Indian Navy is not in the least pleased with how the Russians are executing and following up on the K contract.

I really don’t understand these guys over there and following the events around the Algerian deal, I think the Indian contest is maybe the last chance for MiG to gain any substanbtial orders.

Maybe they really want to kill Mikoyan … 😡

I don’t see a problem especially in mind of the numerous configurations under test.

As such … really nothing special but only an early J-10 model under test.

    But … what’s this: found at 40°24’55.98″N 99°47’26.72″E at the Dingxin AB … looks like a row of J-5 or JJ-5 … then a F-104 … and what are these ????? !

If I wouldn’t know better I would say it looks like a J-9.

To me it looks like a re-hashed MiG 1.44 (MiG-39 Flatpack). All Chinese secrecy aside. it was officially released at the Zhuhai Airshow 2010 of just what the 4th generation Chinese air superiority fighter will look like. It also confirms all of the previous rumors of it being based on the Russian MiG 1.44 prototype. 😎 This is official and not just some fanboy artwork. And, it is referred to as a 4th generation fighter, rather than a 5th generation type fighter.

Ohhh come on ! It confirms at best, that there’s such a project under development.

Otherwise it confirms the following things You might need to learn:

    – Things shown in CCTV are far from being an “official” confirmation, since they usually mix-up J-10, J-11, and fan-arts.

    – If a “real” fifth generation type is shown then it is at best a rejected previous concept (unless the real is unveiled) … as such the XXJ/J-20 will most likely for sure not be MiG-MFI-based !

    – In China a “Fifth” generation type is called “Fourth” generation.

    – In summary the author’s goal was archieved, since all were jumping on that “band-waggon” and will hail: Look, it is “based on the Russian MiG 1.44, it is official and not just some fanboy artwork and it’s only a 4th generation fighter” !!

    Cheers, Deino :diablo:

Why … especially since we all know how tight the PLAAF-security is in regard to this project.

Only because we haven’t seen it on taxi-tests … doesn’t mean that the J-20 doesn’t exist or is that delayed. But I agree we have to be suspicious, careful with such news).

Can anyone confirm whether the 4 Chinese ‘trainer’ aircraft handed over to the PAF are L-15s? There are rumours, based one reports earlier this year, that the PAF is looking at acquiring the L-15?

Forget it ! The one above is just the 6. prototype – actually the 4th flyable one – flying !

    Hmmm …

This new report in the Daily Telegraph suggests that the Eurofighter Typhoon is ahead of the other five fighter contenders in India’s $11-billion medium multirole combat aircraft (MMRCA) competition. The report quotes an unnamed IAF source as saying that the Typhoon emerged on top of the pack in the technical and field evaluations. There have been two earlier reports in the Indian media about the Typhoon making any cut that may happen.

    http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/11/telegraph-typhoon-leads-mmrca-pack.html

Is this once again the same as the report that the EJ-200 will win the LCA-re-engine contest … and two days later the F414 was chosen ?!!

Sorry, no passion here but just the facts!

The facts speak for themselves as versus emotional comments on disappointment and what not!

And if folks could stick to aviation as versus comments on bribery (), that would be another plus..

    @ Teer,

don’t get me wrong and I wholeheartly agree with You in all “facts”, really and I admire the archievments, ADA/HAL had made with the Tejas. Additionally as such I understand that You are – esp. as an Indian taxpayer – are quite enthusiastic or passionable (and surely You are ;)).

But in the end – and once again it’s my opinion or my conclusion – I think with these repeated changes, add-ons in requirements, necessary modifications, delay and cost-overruns it is sad.

It reminds me – You won’t like it – to the once proposed Chinese J-9 or even later J-13. The PLAAF wanted everything – like You said a fighter in the class of the MiG-21 with the performance of the Mirage 2000. To be powered by a moderne indigenious turbofan, to match the latest opponents. Then because of several technical difficulties, PLAAF-political interference, added and revised requirements, …. and again most of all the inability to master the technical challenges in time and on budget both types needed to be re-designed several times – similar to the re-engineing project of the Marut leading to the HF-73 … and finally shared the fate of both Chinese types: they were canceled in the end because each time the design was frozen, new changes were demanded and in the end it was much too late to be introduced into the PLAAF. Like Sens said, they better had chosen the J-9III… test it and modified it to a J-9IIV or V to be introduces; at least they would have gained some flight expiriences.

Once again, now the aim to hold on is different … to develop a moderne, indepentent aerospace industry, and surely the IAF will get some Mk 1 in the next years and finally more (as You said to the original requirements) Mk 2 … but to introduce that type fighter in 2016-2020 is much too late to tell this an international competitive success. Sorry or simply my opinion.

And more I won’t say on that(like Witcha asked me); promised. :p

Disappointed with what exactly? Lets look at each of your questions in turn.
    ….

Just in short and I really don’t know why You are so angry with my … it nearly seems You blame me for these failures or delays !

Just in short I agree with You that it’s wise to update the requirements … to adopt more moderne systems and so on … but again the Tejas has a long, a very long way to go until it can fullfill this role.

You self speak of 5 Squadrons of the Mk 2 and two more of the Mk 1 + these naval birds … but WHEN ???

The Mk 1 will be used merely as a trainer to pave the way and if the predictions are correct on the Mk 2 … after 2015 ! That’s way toooooo late for the IAF, like You said. Additioanl other fighters will be needed to be operated combat ready.

Let’s cancel that project or maybe simply keep it alive as a technology demonstrator like the Lavi TD was later used in the way You said, to “develop” an independent aviation indudstry, but give the IAF a fighter it could operate.

IMO the Indians are just learning the hard way – similar to Sens’ post – what the Chinese were learning serveral decades before … and IMO they sadly have to learn a lot (and longer) more.

    Sorry, Deino

    Deino,

Don’t know why you are surprised/worried as this article is exploratory, the article has more context, beyond the eye catching title from the journo (and it seems he succeeded).

In a nutshell, the AM notes he is unsure about the effect of these changes and proposes additional ones. There is no surety that his wide ranging suggestions will be adopted, either.

    ….

    Agreed, but – honestly – admitted I’m disappointed !

What was the original aim to develop the LCA ??? … when was it’s first flight ???

And now years later and even if each and every other project in other countries had similar delays and so on, I’ve lost all ym hope that the Tejas will reach operational service in reasonable numbers (and not just as a third-ranked aircraft) in the IAF.

Yes, I’m disappointed especially in comparison of the own Indian expectations ..

    Deino:(
