@ Pinko !
Thanks a lot …
esp. the first answer is interesting, even if this is the first time I’ve heard this explanation. The “version” I knew so far is that this may depend on the linguistic and phonetic similarities between the Chinese number ‘four’ (= sì) and the word for ‘dying’ (= sĭ) … similar in a way to the Western fear of the number ‘13’ !
The next answer is the most intersting one, if it’s true that China only modified SU-delivered MiG-15 into MiG-15UTI … then there’s also no need for a new designation.
May I ask for the source of that info ?!
So long and best regards,
Deino
Never heard that the MiG-15 was called J-2 and JJ-2 in the PLAAF.
It seems that the current designation N° began with J-5 (MiG-17)
Agreed … but take a look at several – esp. Russian – web-sites, Yefim Gordon’s books on Chinese military aviation 😮 … and not to mention wikipedia ! 😡
My problem is, that no actual numbers are available and when the MiG-15UTI was really built in China, then most likely a JJ-designation was plausible/possible.
As such a theory could be that following the canceled JJ-1 from Shenyang, most observers thought the “successor” (which the MiG-15UTI never was) would be most likely the JJ-2 … and as such – esp. with nearly no knowing about anything in China at that time – the fighter itself should be the J-2.
Just an idea …
Deino
I do’t think it doe carry extra fuel – does it in the F-16D ??? – but more likely “only” relocated avionics from the place of the second seat.

Really ??? … I hope You saved the pictures before they were deleted !
Could You please re-post them ?!!!
Thanks in advance, Deino
You can see two wide-angle HUDs.
More than impressive !
Esp. in addition to the other ones shown at CDF and since we” have never seen any BS besides the prototype I ask:
1. WHY haven’t we seen any before ???
2. or are they really new/built ones or could they be refurbished Su-27UBKs ??
Regarding the airframes, I tend to say they are real J-11BS and naval BSH.
Deino
excellent work on that Deino, as usual ! 🙂
but what’s the story on this ?
😮
:diablo:
Hmmm … I can at least contribute this !

Deino 😀
J-10B ready for PLAAF?
I would say maybe not ready to enter operational service within a front-line unit, but – if they follow the testing of the “old” J-10 – most likely ready for the next evaluation, operational, tactical testing or so.
Following the J-10-prototypes one test regiment was formed within the FTTC and maybe here’s the same with the new bird.
Deino
excellent work on that Deino, as usual ! 🙂
but what’s the story on this ?
😮
Thanks !
But that’s IMO clearly a PSed one. If You look closely, You can clearly see the two regular greys … if that bird would be yellow it would most likely be only one yellow.
Deino
Nice little bird … but the undercarriage looks way too heavy !
Deino
Not quite right.
Lots of PLAAF units do not carry sqd markings.
I think he meant a ID-number, since currently NO operational PLAAF-unit carries a badge. Sadly this was only a brief period, when the 1. Division had their Tiger badge, the 2. one the one quite similar to the US ACC-badge.
Deino
Since there are no ‘visible’ squadron markings, I am assuming that these are still test units.
Agreed … most likely the PLAAF will form a test-regiment similar to the regular J-10-testing within the FTTC.
Deino
Hey … these are the first “operational” J-10B ..together with IFR-probe !
Seems as the next phase of testing has ended !
