It is not that easy. The Chinese had a design, but no suitiable engine for that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989
denied the Chinese an American option for that.
The single option left was the AL-31FN, which forced a redesign related to that. Here the Russians took over as they did with the J-17, when they transformed the former Super 7.
The Chinese gave the money, decided what they want to have from that and they built it mainly. Such in mind it is a Chinese design in general, whoever gave a helping hand and was be payed for that too. 😎
And here begins the interesting – and IMO still most secret – part of that story !!
We all know that once an American engine – the F404 – was planned to powerr the Super-7 …. and if the Chinese had fine relations with the US at that time , isn’t it too far to think, that also a US powerplant was planned (besides the still reported WS-6, WP-15 or whatever chinese engines) at least as a fall-back option, if their own powerplant would fail (which was not too unlikely !) … and were the US in the mood to do that ????
IMO there much too much discussion on the Isreali or Russion connection to the J-10 … and strangely no-one thinks about a possible US one.
… or maybe that was too much red-wine (actually a very fine Merlot !:o to admit) this evening.
Hicks … Deino :diablo:
I never disagreed to this. Neither did I say J 10 was Lavi there are obviously a lot of changes the Lavi most probably was the base design.
Yes …. my reply was more related to comment the article You mentioned.
Is it not this very thread ?
Uppps … I was reading two traeds simultaniously and didn’t noticed that !
Sorry, I think I’m getting tired.
Deino
….As for the J 10. They can deny it all they want and since the Israelis and Chinese are embarrassed about it they are unlikely to officially confirm it. However I will give you an interesting read thats several years old.
I agree with You, that article in Combat Aircraft is a very good one … it was a very good one in mind of its publishing date !
It was maybe the first “attempt” to redraw the J-10’s development history, but since it was written and published before the J-10 was officilaly unveiled, it has some severe mistakes (not only the completly overestimated dimensions !!)
If You like to read something more up-to date (even also not complete to admit !) try IAPR issue 22 with the Chengdu J-10 as a Focus Aircraft, it includes a “comparison” of the semi-official Chinese version vs. the Russian version and also the in most cases (esp. JANES’s) Western estimations on that topic and (tries) to find a realistic description !
https://airti2.sslcert19.com/airPower.php
Like “over G” said … the Russian comments has to be taken with a very big grain of salt. There were for sure Russian technicans and engineers, who assisted the integration of the AL-31FN, but from this to think they had an inseight in any possible Israeli connction is pure nonsense, esp in mind to other Russian publications on that topic that are even more idiotic (see the tread about “China Humbly Launches Serial Production of Stolen Russian Fighter Jets”
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=95878).
On the other side, no-one could expect an really open Chinese versions of the circumstances and also no-one deny the Israeli influence in the design … but calling the J-10 a son of the Lavi is nonsense pure !
For China, the J-10 is a huge aeronautic break-thru (finally after several failures), which must be praised without any compromise …. and for Russia it must be down-played, since it is a huge brak-thru.

latest reports? link,please
Latest is difficult … the statement I posted from Huitong’s link is the “culmination” of several reports/rumours spinning around for some time, but I can’t give You a link, from where it started.
Sorry,
Deino
Non is surprised by that, when it is suspected that the core-engine of the CFM-56 is used as core for the WS10 too. At least they got a working engine after three decades. If it does work satisfactory has to be shown. More important than raw technical data are the working behavior of an engine.
Agreed … and here I’m still very much sceptical, since the latest reports – besides the ones stating, that production is running at full swing – state, that all WS-10A in the J-11B fighters were again replaced by AL-31F because of reliability issues … at least for the moment.
Deino
Well from what we know J-XX appears to be two programs, a low risk development of the J-10 by 611 institute and a high risk all new design by 601 institute.
Any talk about upcoming flights of a next generation fighter by China is probably the low risk twin engine semi stealthy variant of the J-10 by 611 institute. I have a hunch it will be fairly similar to the Dassault Rafael if it is revealed.
I expect we won’t see 601’s airframe for a long time.
Hmmm …. I have to admit, but I don’t believe that these two projects are still both alive in their original way:
As far as I understand the situation, SAC won the original contest to develop the PLAAF’s next generation fighter, but after some years without any real progress – and also in mind of CAC’s sussess to stem two moderne fighter projects nearly simultanously (J-10 + FC-1) – a decission was made August 2008 to transfer the XXJ program or whatever it is called to both design teams: 611 Institute was selected to be the main contractor for the development of the J-20 and 601 Institute as the sub-contractor.
Therefore, the new fighter is a typical heavy one to be powered by two AL-31F/WS-10A and later WS-15 turbofans ….
The other rumoured second one and smaller project is more akin to a JSF-type … and this one for sure has a long way to go.
Deino
Dude, we are talking abt a high ranking deputy PLAAF commander and not some tom dick harry news reporter or engineer who just say it for the sake of not being left behind. If his words failed to materialise. His head will roll. That is Chinese style. If u say it and failed to carry out on time. U must bear all responsible.
Just like what matt mention, it is only he is confident and the fact, he consulted the trustworthy engineer and witness some of the progress before he make this kind of comment.
China is so far the country taken shortest time to ahieve H-bomb from first nuclear bomb. For example A take how much time to complete a project, does not mean B will equally need same amount of time to complete that particular project.
I completely agree with that statement, even if I’m still more than surprised by that move of “new openess” ! I would have expected a Roll-out not earlier than 2012 …
Anyway … IMO a very good hint that some real progress has been made is the fact of the J-10B-unveiling !
China so far never published anything before a the next succeeding project is already on the run …
Just an idea.

Just found !!??? 😮

????? I thought the Korean Eagles are powered by the GE F110 …. Why should they replace nearly new-built engines in new airframes ????
Deino ????
Su-27SM,Su-33,and Su-27M,Su-35BM is located in right…
O.k … to be 100% correct …. the Su-27SM, the Su-33 (= Su-27K), Su-27M (= Su-35 (1.designation) or Su-37) and the Su-27BM (= Su-35 (not Su-35BM)) all have the IFR-probe !
So let me try it again:
All early Su-27-versions have it located in the middle !!! Only the[COLOR=”red”] updated Flankers equipped with the IFR-probe have it replaced.
Better ???
Deino 😉
Yes, I believe its a J-11B. The IRST is located in the middle unlike the Sukhoi variants which are located to the right. Its interesting to see Republic of Singapore Air Force personnel wear a beret as a head-dress as it is traditionally associated with Armor and infantry.
????? … all Su-27-versions have it located in the middle !!! Only the Su-30-series equipped with the IFR-probe have it replaced.
Deino
Can anyone identfy the countries ??
Deino
HGuhu …. I know it’s getting boring, but is there any news regarding the Tejas-trainer ????

An-70
Chinese propose 200tons military transport plane
…
U all be the judgement. Looks like a more refinement of An-70. The Chinese one seems like having a more bigger fuselage due to the bigger 200tons requirement.
I would be very careful with all these judgements, to see the new Y-X or Y-20 as sometimes called “only” as an enlarged, turbofan-powered An-70-development.
As far as I remember correctly, we know this picture some long time and at first it appeared with some severe grammar-issues. All deemed it more or less an “interesting” Fan-art or what if, but suely not a realstic official artwork.
Now in this news-report exactly this CG is used and all guys cry “YES it is” … the same artist is also known for several other more or less crude and not very realistic CGs of a H-6-look-alike Bomber, a J-8II-look-alike fighter and a J-10B … all not very real !!
On the other side there are several reports, which expect the new 200t-transport more alike an Il-76-based or at least technologically based design.
Therefore … I will just sit and wait for this – IMO biggest surprise of the year – that could only be topped by the PAK-FA’s roll-out. :diablo:
Deino
Just another question !! Any idea, about the recent progress on the P-X and even more on the C-X following the problems ???
Is there a site, where some news are posted about these two projects and their progress ??
Thanks in advance, Deino
Congratulation. 🙂
At GE from 27. Nov 2007 nothing is to see at that place. Not even some earth-work.
30°25’27.87” N and 114°15’43.56” EAt digitalglobe from August 2009, it does look, that mock-up is next to a building and not at the top of one.
Here I’m still not sure, esp. since the closer pictures show it different. But what’s new … it is not only a part of the deck. 😮
