I know it’s fitted for the same reason as a F-104 not a Buccaneer but when it is used, will it successfully slow down the A/C without any structural damage?
I was careful to avoid mentioning any carriers, though the thought had crossed my mind if the circumstances were extreme enough could it? Not that the RN has anything left!
Instead of starting a new thread, might as well ask on here…The Typhoon has an arrestor hook, how successful was this in trials and has the need for it ever arisen whilst in service?
Remember, a week is a long time in politics, it may well be that they are getting the savage cuts out the way now and then come the next election will be hoping we’ve forgotten it all.
Though I do agree that things need to be scaled back, like you I think they are far too wide ranging and to quick to be sensibly thought through. The NHS has been in the process of a major restructuring anyway when the government announced the scrapping of the PCTs and handing power to GPs. The higher education system does need a shake up but again is the new option the right answer. And then there is the armed forces and our beloved RAF…

On the plus side the current government is doing all they can to get us out of debt, not that there will be anything left of a country by the time they’ve finished. Give it a few more years and the RAF will consist of one Chipmunk and and couple of Wessex that will have been overlooked by all the other cost saving exercises.

Aren’t the E3 Sentry fleet named after the 7 dwarfs? And iirc they sought permission to use the Disney artwork internally on the aircraft.
Don’t know about old stuff, I’ve had to reproduce a couple of Disney characters but one was quite distorted, however as they are representing an historical artifact then for historical accuracy the image has to be used.
I would like to think that as it is the illustration/artwork that is the primary work and not the Disney character then the cartoon is not being exploited for direct profit and is acceptable.
What really surprised me though, was that the person who’d made the comment was only – wait for it – thirty-six.
would you prefer someone younger to say it? 🙂
Have to say that from my perspective it doesn’t seem as great as it once was, however all my knowledge of the 50s and 60s is second hand, therefore only the interesting bits will filter through regarding aviation, popular culture etc, not the reality of daily grind etc.
Probably in some ways it’s better but in other ways not so great, just different really.

I think you will find the PBY-5A amphibian could carry the same ordinance as the PBY-5,
I’m looking at the PBY-4 but there wouldn’t have been too much change if anything it would have been lighter without the undercarriage. But then with the radar and leigh light I don’t know what these would have actually weighed but it would probably all even out in the end.
Time to close Brunty down then, clearly the Victor hop a while back was just a prelude to getting it back to the original configuration and drop a few bombs, those Buccs are a bit of a worry too!
One less GR4 – pity.
Two less now, still on the plus side for the government is that it is less money to spend.
Any news on the crew from the first Tonka to go down?
The consensus seems to be two per wing, so I’m guessing the text in question is wrong. As usual a big thanks for all the help.
I wasn’t aware that torpedoes were carried, that must have been an interesting sight.
That’s what I thought, however I’ve read a report of a Catalina that dropped a stick of 6 across a U-Boat and want to try to confirm the facts.
anyone?
