should have mentioned this a bit earlier in the day yesterday, I’d have had a good reason to raise a glass, not that it is needed, will have a belated celebration tonight, looks like a good day was had and the weather held.

I don’t know all these spitfire owners leaving their toys lying around the place, you’d think they would want to keep the country tidy, still it is better than leaving the thing in a layby distracting road users, why we nearly had an accident ourselves whilst driving in darkest Cornwall yesterday! 😀

Wonder how long before it appears at something like flying legends?

They sure don’t build them like they used to, what about the archives of a certain other aviation publication? Are we allowed to mention it on here?

It was very brave of the production team to take this project on, and they did pretty well with what they had, but it was never really going to be enough to do the book justice and I think that so long as you’ve read the book you won’t miss anything by not seeing this dramatisation

Have to agree, but if you just want some nice shots of Spitfires and an indication of life at 92 it will suffice.

Whilst I have issues with some parts of this, I am however glad that my tv license fee hasn’t just been wasted on chat shows, soaps and football.

Has anyone mentioned that in the program it shows Kingcome coming up with the nickname ‘boy’ when Wellum joins 92, but both Kingcome and Wellum say in their books that Wellum was already at the squadron when Kingcome joins them as flight leader?

But then who else really cares about history being rewritten for entertainment?

Rather disapointed that they referred to GW having a complete b/down (in Malta)

I can’t help but wonder which is more accurate as Wellum was evidently involved in the making of it so he must have been aware of the final captions and they did show it, but the book does imply it was a medical condition brought on by combat fatigue. Someone could always ask him.

Have to say that I thought the book is much better but then that can afford to go into much more detail and Wellum’s writing style is very evocative and gives the reader an insight into his feelings and experiences, any adaptation will naturally have the input of others which in some way will dilute the original plus the program was not (I would guess) primarily aimed at the knowledgeable enthusiast but more inline with the general dumbing down for light entertainment purposes that most of the beebs output seems to be these days.

Looking on the positive side, there has been much lamenting the state of education regarding British historical aviation, especially the BoB on this forum so isn’t some form of education through the now very popular docudrama better than letting events go unnoticed?

My copy of Harrier is one of the, if not the most informative books on the subject and is heavily thumbed.

Another reason why JDK wanted the threads merged

Went to No 19 OTU at Kinloss and was eventually scrapped in 1948, quite possibly at the MU on the other side of Hawarden airfield from where she was built.

I’ve procrastinated long enough, youtube will have to wait for later and the next tea break

StringFellow live near me in Chard Somerset and is as far as I know credited with the first powered flight of an aircraft albeit not piloted, considering steam technology available at the time his aircraft worked remarkably well.

I thought that was a bit of a grey area as to whether it really did fly under its own power or was just a long glide, trying to remember those school trips to the museum at the top of Chard High Street but think we were more interested in messing about in those days than paying attention.

I do know that the replica opposite the Choughs won’t get off the ground in a hurry.

With the nuclear subs being effectively steam driven one option is nuclear powered aircraft but the safety fears if they ever came down would probably outweigh any argument in their favour. Otherwise I have an image of some stokers stood on the wings of a lanc shovelling coal over the Ruhr!
