    Nice, but fixed is fixed! Tilted back cause a lack in air to ground capabilitys.
    Lower resolution and lower antenna gain ind the down direction and can’t look over the shoulder..:rolleyes:

    I’ll admit I a little jelly about the rotating dish, but remember that the F-35’s primary goal is low RCS and low cost.

    Because of the moving parts (in themselves cost more), the radome can no longer be sealed. The JSF is designed so that it’s radome never has to be opened after manufacture. It was built with more T&Rs than it needs to meet the spec so that if a few fail over it’s 30 year lifetime, it’s ok. All other modules can be accessed from a access panel located in the forward part of the front wheel bay. This allows the radome to be sealed to a higher degree than normal radomes and reduces RCS.

    As far as scanning below the nose, it’s good enough in conjunction with the lower position of the EOTS to get the jobs done.

    You know what a coarse grid is?

    I guess they like spending extra money on array size just to fool you into thinking it’s bigger that it actually is.

    Btw, dummy T&Rs would degrade the performace of the array.

    I found a zoomed in version of that photo and they match up well with the 1424 pic.

    Can you reconcile these comments? Or explain what the parameters were, or, if you can’t, explain why more parameters invariably mean proportionally more effectiveness?

    It’s called “English”…. “3x the Capability” <> “3x Better”.

    If I have to explain why having the ability to process more parameters in order to make a Positive ID makes you more effective, then you are either trolling hard or a lost cause.

    talking about processing power… if one considers the time gap between f-22s systems and the f-35s ones (a good decade to say the least), we could argue that the f-35 is actually underperforming, considering Moore’s Law according to which the calculating power available doubles every 18 months (that would mean that, after 9 years, the f-35 should be able to handle 64 times the amount of data the f-22 handles, not three

    That is not what Moore’s Law says.

    It says that roughly the number of transistors in an IC chip will double every two years. It does not say that the “processing power” of the new chip will be double or that the efficiency of the new chip will be double. There are seveal factors that will keep transistor count and performance/efficiency on different ramp ratios, key among these is heat and data throughput. This has held true for a very long time.

    One thing to note is that the next Block (the USAF IOC Block of 3i) will get another processor upgrade. The first upgrade (way back in Block 0.5) saw it go from a single chip single core IC card to a quad chip card. No details have been released about the 3i Upgrade details. The next upgrade is scheduled for Block 5.

    Last thing to consider, the F-35 cannot dedicate all its new processing power to just the ID, but also to ALIS & all the integration, sensors, and hardware that it has that the F-22 did not (more robust weapons load, EOTS, EODAS, HMDS, EA, SatComm, etc).

    btw, ALIS is the single biggest chunk of code in the F-35.

    Here are several reasons why modern systems need more ways (id “parameters) to ID a threat:

    1. They have to overcome jamming and obfuscation techniques that the threat will use to hide its identity.
    2. Being multi-role aircraft form the start means that your target set is much larger than single/limited role fighters.
    3. The F-35 is designed to do more without supporting asserts like dedicated ISR, EW, etc.

    One thing to keep in mind is that it’s not just the radar, but also EOTS, EODAS, ESM, CNI, etc and the level of integration (data fusion) between the systems that plays a key part. Then there is the processing power in the back-end needed to handle it all.

    So when someone with intimate knowledge of the program gives a specific number for a particular item across multiple platforms, you choose to ignore it because he did not decide to break the law and release classified information as to what those features are?

    The recent article on mission/threat data just reinforces this.

    There you go. The F-35 is capable of processing three times the number of parameters as the F-22 when making an ID.

    No it is not game changing. Others already do it.

    Remind me again who else comes close to the F-22’s capability, let alone the F-35’s (three times that of the F-22) ?

    Interesting article on the threat database for the F-35. It gives some idea why the aircraft has such a massive amount of software code. The advancements of newer fighters to classify targets is, in my opinion, revolutionary. Fighters like the F-15 had a single sensor to locate, track, target a bogey, then had to rely on IFF to determine whether bogey was hostile.

    The newer generation can classify based on emissions, fan blades, “other” ways that among the most classified aspects of the new generation of fighters. That is crucial seconds off the OODA loop. It punches clean holes in the arguments made by unnamed aviation “experts” the BVR engagements are not truly applicable due to IFF difficulties, “fog of war” etc.

    Couple of minor points fbw; nowhere in that article does it make mention of the “classify based on emissions, fan blades, “other” ways” you are claiming…
    Which them makes it somewhat difficult to make the absolute statement that: “It punches clean holes etc.”

    In addition I’m aware that F-15’s have NCTI and have used it in combat, and am relatively comfortable that other platforms are perfectly capable today of identifying contacts through those methods you mention.

    Which does rather make your little post look quite thin and substance less given that the link doesn’t support your claims and even if it did they are really nothing special for those who have a real interest in military aviation rather than just the F35!

    I think that the following quote from Air Vice Marshal Osley in front of the Australian Parlament in 2012 puts the size of the mission data & it’s need in the F-35 into perspective.

If we are able to do as we plan with the F35, and that is to have good access to the software and to be able to program it appropriately with mission data, it will have the ability to identify hostile aircraft at quite a considerable distance. Then decisions will be made within the formation, it will play to its strengths and it will defeat it, but not by going within visual range.

    The IIR version has the capability to find the target even if the GPS coordinates are off a few dozen meters because of it’s recognition algorithms.

    That is not the same as what Sagem is saying about it.

    AASM INS/GPS IR
    The inertial/GPS/IR kit adds an infrared imager for terminal guidance. With a simplified model of the scene around the target first being uploaded to the weapon, this imager allows the AASM to recalculate its trajectory during the last few seconds prior to impact, using image recognition algorithms. This allows the AASM to hit its target with the highest possible accuracy, even if GPS coordinates are incorrect, or the GPS signal is unavailable. This version is called the SBU-64 Hammer.

    It seems that an airborne image (with specific target marked beforehand) of the target area has to be uploaded to the seeker first, prior to launch. Whether this has to come from the launching aircraft, be in IIR, or can come from a UAV is not stated.
