Here is the company product card for the OLS-35. As you can see, it it nowhere near what has been reported in this thread.
1. The detected target is the SU-30, not a “stealthy” target.
2. The 90km detection range is for a rear-aspect shot.
3. The front aspect range is 35km.
4. Airborne range is a max of 20km due to laser rangefinder.

These were cold war numbers. Since the break-up of Soviet Union these high numbers have lost their purpose.
So how many F-16s did the Netherlands have in 2000?
I thought the RNLAF had, at one time, over 200 F-16s.
It’s obvious when you look at the MOU numbers that there was not going to be a 1:1 replacement, especially for Partner nations.
Not everyone has a Rover terminal so whether the plane has it does not mean that the guys on the ground can use it.
Keep in mind that Blk4 is a software only upgrade over 3F so it is likely part of 4.
They were doing CAS pre-ROVER just fine and they will continue to do so.
Again, if the customer wanted it to be there, it would be.
If ROVER is not in 3F, that just strengthens my point (can’s find any reference yeah or nay).
Remember, it is not LM that decides what made it to 3F but the customers who are buying it. If they wanted it that badly and were willing to suffer the increase in development cost & IOC delay, they would have put it in.
They did not want it in so they did not put it in.

I’m glad you’re so dismissive of a proven life-saver, just because your pet airplane doesn’t have it yet. A few more body bags is a small price to pay, right?
Every weapon system since the beginning of time has to make a Cost/Benefit decision during the design process and the F-35 is no different.
The USMC made the decision that ROVER was not needed for 2B if it meant delaying IOC by at least a year. This is especially true since 3F is scheduled to come in 2017. At best you would be bringing ROVER to the F-35 one year ahead of 3F but costing the USMC a year (or more) delay in their IOC and having to keep Legacy F-18 flying for another year or more.
This is a classic example of “much ado about nothing”.
My point was that the only way that they got ROVER was by using a US system (the LDP).
It’s a nice icing on the cake, but it’s not the cake.
Funny how all the people crying about ROVER not being in Blk2B are the people who are not using the F-35.
IIRC, They have ROVER because they are caring either the Lightning or Sniper targeting pods.

Considering that few current systems have ROVER and no non-US systems employ it, yet they seem to do CAS just fine…. I would say your argument that it is “required” is a gross overstatement.
Just because something is proven to reduce casualties does not mean that it is essential, otherwise we would not use anything but LGBs as they are the most accurate. Also, almost the entire anti F-35 argument would be rendered moot as many say that it is more than is needed.
Block 2 has always been 2 bombs and 2 missiles, either in 2001 or 2013. Since Blk2B is the “final” part of Blk2, it’s the point where the USMC & USAF originally planned to go IOC. If you were talking 2A, you might have a point.

On the A2A issue, most strikers fly around with 2 bombs and 2 missile most of the time, and they don’t have the avionics or VLO airframe of the F-35.
You do not need ROVER for CAS. ROVER came along LONG after the F-35 started it’s development and after the USMC & USAF planned on a Block2 IOC. The USAF, USN, and USMC have been doing CAS without ROVER for damn near 100 years, I (and they) see no issues with it not being part of 2B/3i.
A couple of points:
I would postulate that the F-35A/B are closer to their “Final” capability (Blk3) at IOC than either the Rafale or Eurofighter were when they went IOC as they lacked A2G and most multirole capabilities.1 – Is that true? Block 2B/3I is (on paper) single-mission (fixed target attack). Major question is whether the fusion standard in 2B/3I will allow the use of radar against movers and in-weather. Without that, it’s a clear-air LO bomber (due to weapon limitations), which is of no application at all to the Marines. On the other hand, Rafale and EF could perform air-to-air missions at IOC, which did meet operator needs.

Remember that radar cannot be used to attack ground movers (even on today’s fighters) due to JDAM not having a datalink, only LGBs can be used currently. Radar can still be used to detect ground mover, just not attack them. Since an LGB is needed, relatively clear weather is also required due to the need to designate the target with a laser. SDB2 will give the F-35 all-weather moving target attack capability.

My point is that the Blk2B and even more so Blk3i are a simple upgrade away from the final Block 3F. They are also multi-role from Day 1 where Rafale & EF were A2A at IOC only and took a long, painful time to get A2G.
2 – Don’t forget that the IOC capabilities of the EF and Typhoon were what the customer asked for and contracted for. Not so the partial IOC of F-35.
Why is this good argument for the Rafale & EF, but not for the USMC and USAF? Remember that they both originally were to go IOC with Block 2, yes even the USAF.
Notice on the linked PDF from 2001 that both the USMC and USAF were to go IOC before Blk3 was even out of SDD, let alone IOT&E.

This is all in response to snafu’s claim that when the first USMC F-35Bs go IOC that it won’t be a “real” IOC. My point is that those F-35s will offer some useful capabilities the day they announce IOC and that those capabilities will grow in time, just like every other jet.
A better comparison is what will the F-35A/B do at IOC and how will that compare to the Blk3 config. Second, how do they compare in capability to other recent IOCs like the Rafale and Eurofigher.

If the F-22 was not a LM product, you might have a point. But since LM makes money from either the F-22 or the F-35, I do not think they played a significant part in the F-22’s production shutdown.
btw, I have always lamented the F-22 not getting to at least the 381 number.
IMHO the “powers that be” were split between:
— Congress (who wanted to cut the budget)
— Pentagon (who had to look at ever-shrinking budgets , the threats that they would likely face, and what it would take to face them)
I never really did understand why USA refuse to sell F-22, there has been several countries willing to buy them at any cost.
so why not cash in and cover cost ?
Several Reasons:
1. The avionics were never designed with Exportable-tech in mind. The F-35 is exportable due to the work in this area to keep it’s tech from being reverse-engineered, especially the “codes”.
2. The powers that be did not want the continues call for more F-22s, from certain sectors, after they canceled the program. If there were export F-22s, then there would be calls to restart domestic F-22 buys.
3. We want the best toys for ourselves.
