Wait a minute….. that means that the F-35 is the BEST 5th gen fighter in production :dev2:
if it said best then flame inducing indeed, if it says 2nd best its quite modest.
That and there are only 2 5th gen fighters in production and since the F-22 is the only one in Operational status… that makes the F-35 2nd best by default. :p
I know that things get better with lots of incremental changes in supporting tech… but none of that leads to “100’s” of times better in a 6-10 year timeframe.
The US and NATO members are specifically exempt from this ban. Israel is not a NATO member.
Neither is Australia or South Korea. Japan isn’t squeaking a peep about either of them.
Before UAI (as in now), every weapon that a fighter uses had to be programmed into the planes software (Blocks in the US, Tranche in Europe, etc). This took years to do and cost LOTS of money.
More to the point of this tangent, it meant that nations could no longer control what kinds of weapons work on the planes they sell as long as those planes have UAI.
Most “standards”, when it comes to weapons, are “interface” (read wiring and connectors) standards, not software. Every plane still needs to be re-coded for every weapon (unless the weapon emulates an existing weapon).

If Japan cannot sell arms to “those involved in or likely to be involved in international conflicts”, why are they selling to America?
You’d be lucky getting a 2-3x improvement in detection going from Mechanical to AESA.
Again, nowhere near 100’s of times better.
btw, even with that it took a major change in the technology behind the radar which took what 20-30 years.
I’ll even give you 12 years.. tell me one system from 2000 that is over 100x better now.
And mechanical –> AESA happened in a 5-10 year period and is “hundreds” of times better?
Are you thinking of “Moore’s Law” which states that the number of transistors in an IC will double every 2 years.
The problem with that is that it is nowhere hear “hundreds” and has actually hit a limit. PC processors (the fastest growth area) have not been keeping up with Moore’s law over the past 10 years due to power density, cooling, and speed limits.
Is there a historical trend to show a “hundreds of times faster” ability in radar systems every 5-10 years?

Making a contract decision based on items not covered in the initial request is what got the 2nd tanker program decision tossed.
