    The original plan (from several years ago) for increased AAMs internally was Block 4.4

    Basically, the A shot high & to the right while the B&C shot just to the right.

    The fiscal year 2017 (FY 2017) report by the Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E), said that initial accuracy testing of the podded gun on the Marine Corps’ (USMC’s) F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) and the navy’s F-35C aircraft carrier variant showed their guns also exhibit the same right aiming bias as with the A-model. However, the report said, the long bias is not manifested in the podded gun systems. The report also said initial accuracy testing on the B- and C-models demonstrated better results than the gun on the A-model.

    Partner nations (along with the US) put their Lot11 orders in years ago. This “handshake” and the upcoming “finalization” is just the period at the end of the sentence, contract wise.

    Contracts for companies to produce parts do not typically go year to year. They get extended as production continues. They are subject to occasional review and can be rebid (like the recent EODAS ones) when teh JPO feels that there is a reason (ie tech improvements, for cause, etc)

    If I was to create an account on F-16.net mentioning this I would get my head ripped off along with my questions, answers and account deleted the next day.

    There are plenty of people on F-16.net that ask questions and we don’t have a problem with them.

    However, if you are straight up trollish, rude, etc then that can cause some issues.

    To answer you questions directly, it’s all about context. Exact RCS values are classified and as they say, “Those who are talking, don’t know and those who know, aren’t talking”. The conflicting comments from different offices about each aircraft’s RCS as it relates to each other are likely cherry-picked numbers to support each side in the context of the interview. The “eight F-35s to do what two F-22s can handle” can be easily explained in the context of “Area that the F-22 can engage a threat within x number of minutes”. You can easily flip the equation by stating an A2G mission where in many cases no amount of F-22s can do the job (ie requiring a bunker buster, plinking moving targets, ID a target, etc).

    General hostage said this:

    “The F-35 is geared to go out and take down the surface targets,” says Hostage, leaning forward. “The F-35 doesn’t have the altitude, doesn’t have the speed [of the F-22], but it can beat the F-22 in stealth.” But stealth — the ability to elude or greatly complicate an enemy’s ability to find and destroy an aircraft using a combination of design, tactics and technology — is not a magic pill, Hostage reminds us.

    In that context (note that ‘tactics’ is specifically cited) I would say that “stealth” is not the same thing as “RCS” (as Gen. Hostage points out). The F-35 has a much more robust ESM (to include jamming and towed decoys), better sensors, better ability to operate at night, better comms, better mission data files, etc over the F-22 and can use those advantages in certain missions.

    It’s already fixed. Note the date of the article is 6 months ago and its only source is last year’s DOT&E report that got its data from pre-Sep 2017.

    You do understand the difference between accuracy of a gun and point of aim errors from the sight, right?

    The first is hard to fix as it involves hardware changes and the second is relatively easy as it is just a software fix to update the impact point calculations.

    The F-35’s gun “had” an issue with the second item, impact point calculations. There is noting wrong with the gun itself.

    The DOT&E completed it’s report for 2017 well before the JPO finished SDD. Weapons testing did not complete until Dec 2017.

    In case that’s not clear enough for you:

    The team completed 46 weapons delivery accuracy tests to verify that all weapons launched from the F-35 aircraft can effectively strike intended targets with required precision. An F-35A completed the final WDA on Nov. 30, 2017, with internal gun testing.

    Things are not that easy to “copy”, just look at the state of Russian Engine tech.

    The F-35’s tech is hidden behind multiple layers of anti-tamper tech, which is why it’s allowed to be exported and the F-22 is not.

    Much like every other news item, multiple sites report on the same incident from the same “source”, that being the transponder. There are multiple apps that link to the transponder signal which is why you have different screenshots.

    I guess the question would be why haven’t the rest of the F-35s flown in Israeli space with the transponders on if it’s normal to do so IN Israeli space?

    I think it was deliberate rather than a mistake.

    An F-35, most probably one of the Adir jets recently delivered to the Israeli Air Force, appears on Flightradar24.com: deliberate action or just a case of bad OPSEC?

    On Jul. 23, an F-35 went fully visible on popular flight tracking website Flightradar24.com as it performed a mission out of Nevatim airbase. The aircraft could be monitored for about 1 hour as it went “feet wet” (over the sea) north of Gaza then flew northbound to operate near Haifa.

    AIM-120D will still be inferior to a Meteor because of motor burnout.

    Keep in mind that the original Meteor spec was “3x the NEZ of the missile it was replacing”. That missile was the AIM-120B, not the C or later variants. The Aim-120D has much better all-out range than the B and its NEZ has improved greatly thanks to GPS assisted INS, 2-way datalink, ECCM improvements, seeker improvements, etc.

    That being said I have no doubt that the Meteor has a better all-out range than the AIM-120D, but I also think that the 120D has a better pK within its NEZ.

    A lot of the RAM is baked in and yes, it is a “little” more expensive than an F-16 for CPFH (about 14% more per the latest SAR). Market size & annual build rates play a big role in keeping the costs down. In a few years it will actually have a lower URF than the Super Hornet.

    It’s only about $10 to $15 mil cheaper than the F-35, but I guess that is considered a “budget fighter” in today economy.

    Capability to upgrade electronics quickly is a quite interesting feature of Gripen E.

    Already in the F-35 through a combination of COTS, VMs, APIs, and middle-ware.
