    The problem with flares and newer seekers is that modern seekers no longer just see a hot blob, but a full picture of the target. Even from a distance, the flare’s rapid change in direction is ignored by the missile’s seeker as being obviously not the fighter.

    Here is a video of the Aim-9X during live trials. It shows the seeker homing in on the drone dispite dozens of flares being ejected and ignored.

    Nobody would be waiting for the fractions of the second. If they see a blip on the screen, they just point the IRST sensors there, send data to others and fire few IR-guided kind regards from all directions. The ALR-94 will not even have awaken from the sleep..

    The search radar of ground units will only provide a bearing to the blip. It will not provide range or altitude, thereby making an IRST lock not likely.

    Also, since the belly “flashed” we know that the F-22 was changing directions making an IRST lock even less likely.

    Question, since the enemy planes are using IR based missiles, why is the F-22 not engaging them at BVR rages?

    considering cancellation, you don’t have to have “faster than light adaptation”

    when a radar emits, its signal is detectable much further than the radar’s detecting range.

    When the wave hits an object, in order to be detected by the radar, it has to travel all the way back… as there is never 100% reflection strength, that would mean that the signal is detectable by the plane in front of it to a distance superior to the twice of the range of the radar… that gives quite a lot of time to your ECM suite to send the cancellation wave back towards the emitter

    The only way for your radar to have immediately an echo would be if you started operating it when you’re well whithin the range, but for that, you either have to be lucky or have another source to show you where the bandit is… again, that source may be jammed and you’re stuck back to the point one…

    The problem with Active Radar Cancellation (ARC) is that as radar & computer tech gets faster, active cancellation gets harder. Soon, if we are not there already, each radar pulse (or groups of pulses as in LPI AESA) will be at different freqs and modes. The ARC emitter cannot create a mirror pulse for each original pulse created and the original radar will likely be programmed to detect late pulses as being from an ARC source.

    – good ECM suite is better than stealth (as you can adapt it to the enemy radar frequencies which is out of the question for aircraft skin or shape)
    – any fighter, including the F-22 if it was involved in that “uncapacity to lock on in BVR and shoot”, has to be good in dogfighting… (reminds me of F-4s sent to vietnam with missiles only)

    Good ECM is only better than stealth when the stealth fighter only has radar to work from. This is the case for the F-22, but not for the F-35. The F-22 was supposed to have AIRST (and I still think they should be installed) and still have the room for them. An IRST will allow the stealth fighter to ID the emitting plane while it still in the BVR range-band and engage it before it gets to WVR range.

    Newer weapons will also diminish the effectiveness of ECM. The US’s new JDRADM BVR missile is being designed to have three sensors at the same time. Along with the normal radar, it is also planned to have HARM functions and IIR. The IIR is especially important in a heavy ECM environment because it will allow the launching aircraft to get a BVR missile in the neighborhood of the ECM emitting plane and the IIR can take over.

    reading through the Q&As I would say most of their concerns revolved around

    1. doing things as the KC-135 had done them even though it would be better to do it a new way with a new plane (flight profiles, mission planning, whatnot)

    This is where Mfgs but heads with the Military. The Military knows how to do it’s job and knows what it wants. The Mfgs say that they are not doing it right and you need our plane to do it better.

    Who do you trust when it comes to planning missions, the military or a Mfg?

    you can read their pdf letter in the link above, but here’s the relevant quote

    That is a rather vague statement on NG’s part. I was looking for something more specific as to parts of the RFP.

    its not meant to compete against the F-22. I’d like to see the F-22 do all that a Rafale can – ain’t happening – the aircraft wasn’t designed to lug stuff around.

    True, but that’s why we (ie the US, UK, AUS, etc) are getting the F-35.

    In the Anti-Shipping role, the F-22 can use the AMSTE/JDAM/SAR combo.

    I was referring to DIRCM for “fast movers”. DIRCM units have already flown on US (and others) transports and helicopters.

    Are you saing that 4.5 gen fighter cannot have DIRCM and LOAL missiles with HOBS?

    Only the F-35 has a funded development program in place, and a plan to implement DIRCM in the future (Block 5).

    That, and the EODAS system give the F-35 a unique WVR advantage.

    To operate as a stealth-fighter the F-35/C are limited to a bomb-load of 1,8 tons and the F-35B to half of that. Which is sufficiant in my eyes, but all that has nothing to do with a higher range of a higher attack speed by internal carriage. State of the art fighters are designed with some external loads in mind too. 😉

    The F-35C’s internal carriage is 5,200 lbs and the F-35B is 3,500 lbs.

    The F-35 has SATCOM, so a loss of MADL or Link-16 is not critical.

    Btw, MADL is directional, so good luck detecting or jamming it.
