    Except if you fire at higher ROF, your barrel – or in the railgun your track – will melt. And pretty quickly. The Navy is trying to get its railgun design to the point where the track lasts close to 10 seconds (actually more like 8-9) under its current full ROF. A Mk45 or Vulcano could go 400 seconds with a big enough magazine feed, and even high-pressure tank guns would last easily 30-40 seconds at full ROF.

    I did say once the tech matures. A MBT can last a lot longer than a minute at full ROF, I know because I was the loader 🙂

    Umm, no? That would be the case if one used explosives to propel the projectile instead of gunpowder, which (relatively) slowly burns while propelling the projectile.

    A chemical round still produces it’s greatest G loadings at the first moments of ignition with the G loading falling off until the projectile leaves the barrel.

    … the 64-MJ railgun for the Navy is intended to accelerate at up to 50,000 g. That’s twice the g stress encountered in a conventional gun. In any trainable gun, you can’t just extend the track to 100 ft.

    To get a chemical round to those performance levels it would expose the shell to greater than 50k G.

    You missed my point. I was not comparing a specific railgun to a specific chemical gun, but the general benefits of railguns once the tech has matured.

    Here are the railgun advantages, once the development is done.

    1. Higher rate of fire. A less massive shell can be manipulated faster into a firing position. With all things being equal, this allows for a higher ROF.

    2. Lower ammo storage requirements, no powder needed.

    3. Better transfer of energy to projectile. In a chemical round, all of the impulse is applied to the round at the start and then drops off till the round leavs the barrel. In a railgun, the acceleration is constant fo the entire barrel.

    4. Less duds. With a gentler acceleration, the electronics come under less G stress upon firing.

    5. No muzzle flash (of powder anyways).

    6. Safer operations… remember the USS Iowa

    I thought we were speaking of missiles that were/are in service…

    I did not know that ASALM had an A2A mode.

    Is it just me, or was the ASALM the missile launched at Superman?

    Well, we were talking BVR AAMs…..

    So the only Nuke AAM ever put into service = Hughes GAR-11/AIM-26 Falcon

    You quoted CLEARLY that the manufacturer of the OLS-UEM used on the MiG-35 said so. Since the scenario assumes a Flanker threat, you might want to quote UOMZ who build the IRST used by that fighter, however… you’ll probably find that more than doubles the detection ranges. Whether this is enough to threaten a F-35 is another matter.

    Good catch. I did a little searching and found this:

    The OLS-30 (36Sh-01), is an improved version of OLS-27 developed by UOMZ with a vibration-proof receiver, micro-cryogenic system, improved service life and new software. Perhaps also has TV channel. Range 90km in pursuit, 40km head-on. Possibly the same as Izdeliye-52Sh.

    So, even with a head to head detection range of 40km, the F-35 will still see the Su before being seen, and take the first shot virtually every time. Also, the F-22 and F-35 both contain active thermal management systems in the form of fuel cooling systems in the leading edge of the wings, components, etc.

    And radar is outranged by ESM…

    That is generally true with 4th gen systems, but they have ZERO experience with the F-22’s and F-35’s LPI waveforms and patterns. The whole point of LPI is the ability to be used without being able to be tracked via ESM.

    Again, my point is not to say that the F-35 is invisible or invincible, but to show that Kopp continues to always show the best of the Mig/Su threat, but none of the advantages of the F-35.

    You misunderstood.

    For the money you spend on one F-22 for it’s entire lifetime, you could get 3-4 F-35s.

    Thus I think it prudent to keep the orders ticking slowly at the cost of something else.

    So one Raptor for every 3-4 (total lifecycle cost) F-35s os OK with you?

    No thank you.

    If there is a NEED for the F-22, it will be in the first weeks of a high-threat war. After that, the F-35s can finish it up. No need to wear out the F-22s in a protracted campain.

    See, there you go again. You have to stop dismissing what people say without reading it thoroughly.

    Interesting theory. That somehow the F-35 is invisible to 2nd and 3rd gen IRST. Hmmm.

    I quoted CLEARLY that the manufacturer of the OLS system himself claimed that in a head to head engagement, the OLS would not detect the oncoming fighter until 15km. Do you think that the F-35 would not have dealt with the Su till after the 15km mark?

    I also only stated that the F-35 in Kopp’s scenario will take out the Su before it was detected. Again, this was Kopp’s scenario, not mine.

    What people don’t “trust” are people making claims of a jets prowess that only has 2 percent of its flight testing done.

    Any criticism of the F-35 is somehow not good because it involves going against the Lockmart spin game.

    Now your pulling a Kopp trick. Yes, the complete airframe has only done 2% of the AC’s flight tests. But, how much of those flight tests have to do with the EOTS? The EOTS system not only is an evolution of an existing system, but it has a large number of hours in the lab and in the air. As of April 09, the EOTS has accrued 10680 hours in the lab and 152 hours in the air. And those are not just general flights where it is just tagging along, but dedicated EOTS test missions.

    They know what it can do. Besides, this was not a “look what the F-35 can do” post, but a “this is why people do not trust Kopp” post.

    I have no problem with negative comments about the F-35, as long as they are backed up with facts, not supposition or outright deception.

    And what about the U.S. Navy? They produced those slides.

    Pardon the Boys ELP. They just associate everything you say with Kopp, likely because almost every article or post you publish has links back to APA.

    Why do they dislike Kopp so, well, because he takes the worst of all possible F-35 “facts”, the best of a Mig/Su, and makes up the rest.

    I will give you a classic example:

    Looks impressive, does it not? But wait, the devil is in the details. Here are the problems I have with it.

    1. In the top pic, Kopp would have you believe that the F-35 can be detected from great distances. How is that supposed to work? Without radar (at least he got that right), the IRST has nothing to queue it. ESM queuing you say, yeah right. Not against LPI APG-81.

    But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and say that, somehow, the F-35 pilot was retarded and left his radar on non-LPI mode and it gave the IRST a decent sector to scan. How good is that IRST anyways?

    During the OLS tests we got MiG-29 detection ranges up to 45 km from the tail and 15 km from the front. Ranging device effective range for the aerial targets is 15 km, for the ground targets – more then 20 km.

    Now since Kopp was so kind as to show a head-to-head engagement, we must assume that the F-35 was detected at 15Kkm. But the F-35 is hotter you say? Ok, 20 km. Question, what would happen to that flying barn door of a fighter called an Su-30MK if he got with 100km in an ever closing engagement with an F-35? He would never see the 20km mark that’s what.

    2. See anything wrong with the lower pic? I do, a big one. Mr Koop wants to send the RAAF’s newest fighters into combat with missiles that are over 15 years old at least. Hows that? Easy, he lists that AMRAAM as a “C” model (no Blk listed). How can this be since the F-35 will fly with the “D” model at least. Well, it’s just another attempt to put the F-35 into a bad light, even if he had to make up facts to support the picture. Also notice that he did not put a block on the Aim-120C? Was it a C5, C6, C7?

    Funny thing is that it does not matter. Hows that? Simple, because by what we have learned in #1 above, an Aim-9X, Aim-132, or Aim-120C5 could take him out long before the F-35 was detected.

    Do you see where I am getting with this Eric? People don’t trust you because you put too much faith in people like Kopp who are the laughing stock of internet.

    I have read many of your pieces and like a lot of what you have to say, but when you have articles that only (or mainly) quote people like Kopp it is a major disappointment.

    And speaking as a fellow “Eric”, I hate to see our name be-smudged.

    There will only be approx ~187 F-22s. Development will cost too much per airframe. The F-22’s computer is not even maxed out yet, no need to upgrade. With 2500+ F-35, the dev cost is acceptable.

    2. The DAS allows the F-35 to track all airborne items and will allow the F-35 to keep the UCAVs in formation. Unlikely, thats probably too much bandwidth for MADL to handle. They will need a technology such as the laser comms used in ORCLE.

    Them may get laser comms in the future. Sounds like something to add to the DAS modules since they cover the entire 360 sphere. Besides, MADL only needs to broadcast the GPS, speed, and heading queues to the UCAVs. Since MADL has the bandwidth of Link 16, this is not a problem.

    3. If they put an IRST and DAS into the UCAVs, the F-35 can use them extend it’s Situational Awareness.

    4. The UCAVs will first be used just as bomb/missile trucks (ala B-1R). A UCAV with the sensor suite of an F-35 (EOTS/DAS/radar) will cost as much as an F-35 . If the UCAVs are truly that capable, then there is no need for a human-infested F-35 to tag along with the swarm.

    I did not mention radar. The EOTS and DAS units are relitively cheap compared to LPI AESA radar.

    The most important attribute that an UCAV can possess that an F-35 doesn’t is greatly increased range. If the UCAV is 500 miles deeper into enemy territory, why have an F-35 in control? The authentication of targets and permission to employ weapons can be done from a Mission Control Element located thousands of miles away (as done by Predator and Reaper today).

    My original response was not to say that this will be the first use of UCAVs, just a likely first use of UCAVs in the A2A role, before they get AI.
