Blabla … No source. As I was expected.

The program office is also within range of its target dates to deliver full warfighting capability, which is tied to the aircraft’s 3F software, Bogdan said. Both the A and C models are slated to get 3F software before the February 2018 threshold date. The Marine Corps’ B variant will obtain the 3F software in two stages, with its final update in May 2018.

The initial operating capability date of 2016 means the F-35A will be able to deploy with a limited capability, based on an updated schedule first planned in 2001. The most important date, Welsh said {Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh}, is when the F-35A will reach full operational capability, meaning the jet will be able to use all of its weapons and fly in full combat with its complete software suite. This is not expected until after its most advanced software version, block 3F, begins to come online in 2017.

    Stop cherrypicking.

FOC is 3F, pure and simple. IOT&E is irrelevant in determining if 3F meets the spec.

SDD “ends” in 2018. All your mixing up of the dates or IOT&E testing will not change or extend that.

No, you misunderstood: in not any point I have said 10 years late. Check it.
I have said instead that it’s the double of the envisaged time to reach IOC: 2006 to 2010/2011 is 4/5 years, 2006 to 2015/2016 9 to 10 yen years.

Sorry, I must have mentally connected you talking about 1st flight to IOC to Ezco’s false claim of the F-35 being 10 years behind schedule.

    My bad.

We unfortunately still don’t know when the whole process is going to be finished.

That depends. It scheduled for late 2017 to mid 2018 depending on a few things, primarily how soon the DoD can recover from the age of Gilmore.

Oh I really thank you for your correction… but then How an FOC: planned for 2021, can happen 20 years after the Program started: 2001, except if there is 10 years of delay ?
I am very bad in Math you know, if you could tell me … 2021 – 2001 = 20 years… but only 10 years SDD ?

Block 3F jets roll off the production line in 2018 (& existing Block 3i jets will quickly get patched), so where are you getting 2021 from?

SDD is also scheduled to end in 2018.

Looking at the pic I posted before of the initial schedule shows EMD (ie SDD) ending in 2012. So SDD is currently schedule to end in 2018, 6 years behind schedule, not 10. Before you say “What about IOT&E”, that is not part of SDD and was originally supposed to be done concurrently but they decided to do their own thing.

You seriously consider the IOC… based on 2B version is ready for military operation ? 😮
If yes congrats… LM succeeded to fool you !

The IOC requirements were laid down by the DoD, not LM.

You should write to Bogdan and tell him to close the SDD phase… the one that was supposed to be finalized in 2011.
    http://www.jsf.mil/f35/
“… The F-35 team immediately entered the program’s 10-year System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase….”

I know that this may be hard for you to understand, but there is a difference between IOC and FOC.

IOC is “Initial” (ie just the beginning, bare minimum, etc) and FOC is “Full” (ie has all the features that the SDD phase encompasses).

Please add remedial English to the remedial math class that you need to take as this will help you in the future be able to communicate clearly and to understand the subject at hand.

Lol… “available for military operations by 2010” when it IOC’d in 2015….. 5 years behind schedule.

Also, those cost estimates are in FY19xx dollars and are not inflation adjusted.

Seriously, go take a remedial math class.

I don’t have issues with the fact IOC was declared on very limited capabilities… after all IOC can be subject to interpretation. But I have issue then when people are using this IOC to claim any progress on the Program…
IOC is like the block 3f : f was supposed to stand for finale… before the block 4 appears to be the once providing the full capability. Block 4 will not appears prior 2022, optimistic scenario.
Then people will claim that there are no delays…

looking at the “official” milestones, true the F35 is only 5 to 7 years behind schedule… In reality it is 10 years behind schedule.

You have some serious logic/math deficiencies going on there.

    1. Block 3F was NOT the IOC Block for the USAF or USMC. This was the plan since the contract was sighed in 2010. Each was exactly 5 years late to declare IOC.

    2. Block 3F is FOC. Nowhere but in your mind does anyone official call Block 4 FOC.

    3. The first parts of Block 4 are due to reach the fleet beginning in FY2020, not 22.

Spudman said that original contract envisaged the reaching of IOC in 2010/2011: given that first flight of the F-35 was in december 2006 that would amount at 4/5 years.
Now, he claimed that the total delay of the F-35 was of just 5 years overall, so I pointed out that is the double of time in comparison to what it was deemed necessary to pass
    between the two points.

Your last sentence makes little sense.

The actual 5 years is still not your fictitious 10 years of being late.

According the contract of 2001 the first flight in 2006 was in schedule or already late?

2006 Was the planned 1st flight timeline.

The whole IOC is nonsense.. a stunt created for fools to make a tick in the box..

    That is based on??? nothing.

The F-35A/B were originally intended to IOC with less than the final SDD Block (ie Block 3F). Only the USN intended to wait till SDD was finished before declaring IOC.

Per the original 2001 contract the USMC/USAF IOCs were 2010/11 but ended up 2015/16… that’s a 5 year delay for you who lack math skills.

F-35A or what ever version will need much more escrots than Superhornet. think harder you will get the answer. 2030 is too far just in post 2020 era the advancement in AWACS/Satellite technology and hypersonic weopons loaded on aircraft with multiple racks will pretty much guarantee hit before even F-35 turn on its afterburner on tarmac. F-35 will need to be parked very far from theatre and will need extensive tanker support and even need a lot of cargo support to transport ammunition and parts to F-35.

How would the Superhornet fare in that fictitious environment?

The simple inarguable fact is the F-35 can do more now, farther, and with less supporting assets than the Superhornet. Will things get harder in the futrue, sure, but that just means that the F-35 has a better starting point with pleanty of expandable capability while the SH is already hampered by teh needed assets today.

when the F 35 is on the way to be delivered 10 years later than initial schedule, when the Program spent 100% more budget than initially planed.

The F-35A is 5 years behind schedual and IOC has already happened. They are not going to somehow cancel IOC and wait another 5 years to do it again. They are also notwhere near 100% over budget and infact are having better cost projections every year.

If you are referring to IOT&E, so what. The DOT&E dug it’s own hole that it needs to climb out of. Them being late will not slow down operations within the DoD and the F-35 will still be deployed & serve overseas.

    I know , Spudman I know…
It was precisely the idea that you retain the rest of the word being represented, aereonautically talking, by nations like Denmark, Canada and Finland that had me to raise eyebrows and seriously doubt your competence in both military matters than geography.

My RotW comments were clearly aimed at counries that used the systems that I was referenceing, ie the F-18 & F-18.

SpudmanWP, you are confirming all the bad they are saying against american educational system regarding geography.

it has nothing to do with education and has everything to do with how much money your military can spend.

There is no such advantage of F35 over F18E. F18E can upgraded with enhanced engine and CFT. infact twin seat F-18F will have advantage in 2030 over single seat F35 as C&C fighters of swarms of uavs and missiles.

Depending on range the F-35C can hold quite an advantage over the SH.

The SH has to drop it’s wing EFTs to carry 4 large munitions while the F-35C does not lose any fuel (not to mention that the F-35C can carry 6 large munitions while the SH cannot).

The F-35C is also easier to upgrade since it’s avionics are VM & Middleware based, has a larger userbase to spread the DEV cost (which is already being paid for & ongoing), its CNI (comm, nav, & ID) is software based, and there is not only room in the ICP bay for expansion but there is an additional 8-slot bay in the tail for future expansion.

On top of all of that, the typical CONOPS for the SuperHornet includes escorts, EW support, decoys, buddy tankers, etc…. While the typical F-35C CONOPS needs none of those.

As far as SH upgrades, the userbase is too small to justify the expenditure (ie new engines, CFTs, etc). The ASH concept has been out there for a while but there has not been any takers.

On the Swarms issues, they control themselves, the pilot only assigns targets, missions, etc. It’s not a high workload and something that the F-35 has built into itself already (ie asset management, target assignments, etc). The smart thing would be for the F-35 to act as a relay (using SATCOM & MADL) so that off-board controllers would manage the swarm most of the time leaving the pilot to do his normal job while still being able to take over the swarm as needed.

A dumb argument, IMHO. “Is designed not to require EW support” doesn’t mean squat, you do not decide by design whether you require the support or not, the situation dictates it.

It was designed to provide it own EW support which was a key component of it’s design. Obviously situations will change at some point in the future but its CONOPS is clear (ie unescorted penetration of high-threat advanced IADS to include modern Double-Digit Russian SAMs) and the USN has not said otherwise.
