The Buccaneer Aviation Group had another successful weekend at the recent Bruntingthorpe open day.
Hard to believe we started off all those years ago as like minded individuals and have since come together as a group with four Buccaneers in our care!

You’re not kidding Matt, there’s an awful lot of re-wiring!

After six years of painstaking restoration at Bruntingthorpe, Buccaneer XW544 finally moved under the power of both of her Spey 101’s today.
Congratulations for this momentous occasion go to Dave, Andy, Graham, George, Julian and Ollie for all of their hard work. I played a small role myself in the restoration over the years and with that in mind Dave kindly offered me the front seat for 544’s first taxi run in 27 years. A great privilege that I will never forget!
Below is a short piece of footage taken by Buccaneer XX894’s new 2011 season pilot Mike…

You may note from the clip that the braking system on 544 is incredibly sharp and during the last part of the video both engines were confidently accelerated to 80% against the brakes before shutting down.
Incidentally the team will have been looking after XW544 for exactly 10 years in January 2011 and their aim was to have her moving under her own steam inside of 10 years. It was a close call I guess but must be very satisfying to have achieved all of this with still three weeks to go!
Well done guys, not long until that 3 ship run on a Cold War Jets open day!
Its definitely still on!
Well, we finally run the newly installed Spey fitted to XW544!
Both port and starboard Spey’s were run in turn for the first time in 27 years with only a small handful of snags to fix.
A few photos…

The port wing wiring was also completed along with the port aileron cables.
All being well 544 will be run on both engines simultaneously in a few weeks time!
The wires all look the same, how do you know which is which without trial and error?
It’s a pain staking job of metering them all out! The electrical manuals are a must for this sort of thing as it cannot be done without them. Fortunately the colour coding helps a little. E.g. the wires in the photos are coded as follows:
Blue = Autopilot (for the ailerons).
Yellow = Micro-switches (for the autopilot over travel disconnects).
Whites = Wing tip Formation and trailing lights etc.
Screened = Antennas etc.
All of the cables in the red coloured flexible conduit are armament cables for the pylons. These are no longer need and were simply removed.

Buccaneer XW544
Buccaneer XW544’s starboard wing wiring was finally sorted out yesterday!
Before…

After…

The port wing will get the same treatment in shortly!
Also, both engines were dry spooled in preparation for a run in a few weeks time. This was the first time that the starboard engine was spun over since fitting to the fuselage!
A little bit of video footage here:

Finally XW554’s starboard Spey has been fitted!! Yesterday morning started off with a successful ground run in the stand and then in the afternoon the Spey was transplanted from the stand into the airframe.
The capacious engine bay…
The Spey finally back where it belongs…

Nacelle re-fitted… Job done!
Now, the eagle eyed among you will perhaps notice that the weather conditions and time of day appear to change half way through the re-fit process. This is not an illusion because when the engine was first fitted in the afternoon we could not get it to pick up on the main fuselage mounting point? To our horror we soon realized that the main fixing was missing from the Spey. If only we had checked first!! So out came the engine again for the part to be fitted (which was robbed off of the unused side of the port engine). In the end we wrapped things up around 10pm but at least we know that in just a few weeks time our hard work will pay off when we get to see 544 roar in to life on both engines for the first time in 27 years!
