Yes David your correct, a Harrier was the aircraft of choice for a replacement, but the business is a very well run family affair and I believe there was a bit of a family divide as whether to replace the Swift or leave it where it is.

These photos of the Swift might prove interesting to someone, they used to be hung up inside of the store.

ZA319, Gate guard, DSDA (Defence Storage & Distribution Agency) headquarters, Bicester, Oxfordshire

At risk of being pedantic, unless there are two round there, this aircraft is at Upper Murcott or Ambrosden, a couple of miles south of Bicester. I’m sorry to be vague but I only ever pass it when I’ve missed the right turning!

If you look at my photos in the first post you can clearly see the starboard main gear door is hanging down. I could see inside the undercarriage bay that the main gear leg/axle was there but with no main wheel or tyre fitted. I believe David Reid from the D&G museum was off to collect some wheels for it during the course of today as he was due to pay my colleague a visit on route to pick up a refuelling probe for there Bucc XT280.

Whoever bid on the one engine cancelled it last minute due to logistics. So I guess there will be four still available if they are re-listed.
Its funny though, whenever XL391 was discussed on this forum over the years there were plenty of forumites suggesting that airframe should be scrapped and the nose kept, but it seems that no one wants that part either, shame.

Crikey, It only flew in just over two years ago, surely that’s got to be accidental damage rather than just corrosion?
I can’t believe that Concorde flew at twice the speed of sound with the skin reaching high temperatures for years and years and then it just develops a large gap in the wing after sitting static on the ground for a while.

    Peter,

As Kev35 has already mentioned, the new building separates the Valiant from the Vulcan and Victor so unless someone is willing to sanction a lot of concrete laying around the front and side of the new building I don’t think it is possible. It certainly looked to me during my visit that there’s no way of getting them all together outside for a photo shoot without some additional work being required.
A huge missed opportunity if you ask me, as I’m sure many enthusiasts would have queued up with wallets in hand to photograph a trio of V-Bombers. I know I would have!

Does anyone know exactly when a Vulcan, Victor and Valiant were last seen altogether?

I’ve been to the D&G museum a few times now and it’s a great place to visit. I’ve got to say I’m well chuffed that they’re getting this Lightning, which by the way is an F.53 serial number ZF584.

I too was told during my visit today (unofficially of course) about the disposal of the BA collection. I hope it is just someone’s idea of testing the water to see what the reaction will be. I’m not a big fan of civil aircraft, but it’s a collection worthy of saving, especially the Rolls Royce powered 707.

Well it looks like someone wants one of the engines as the bidding has commenced!
I guess it will make a nice display piece anyway!!

I hope no one objects if I add a couple of my own photos taken at Cosford today?
Weather conditions weren’t great for photography but it was my first visit to the museum since 1997, I just had to see the Valiant outside before it gets shoehorned in to the new display hall. I think judging by the incomplete state of the new structure the Valiant will be outside for many months to come so enjoy it why you can!
