If I can get to Smearthorpe on Sunday with the Hurricane, my engineer will be driving the exhibition trailer, we can show you how to fold your wings, I will bring the bespoke made ‘hinge’ along and you can inspect the trailer.
I can’t promise right now that I can make it, but I will give it my best shot.Lucky with the cannons, mine on the MKIX are fixed and caused no end of problems when I started shifting it around Cornwall.
all the best

Fancy bringing the Spit ?
.
Its a bit short notice, would be minus wings as the trailer isnt ready.
My wings will unlock, pull out 4″, rotate 90 degrees leading edge up, then fold to the rear and sit in a ‘saddle’ on the rear fuselage. The opposite wing will have a fold down ‘stay’ to stop any imbalance. The whole thing is gently rachet strapped down. I’ve designed it to be a one man operation, including the winching on and off the trailer. When the wings are folded the radiator is unlocked and removed. The tailplane on mine can also be removed to keep it inside the legal width limit that would render it a wide load. My Spitfire folds similar to a Barracuda and will almost certainly remain on it’s trailer during exhibition, using the trailer as a dias. The wings will not be removed from the fuselage, just folded.
Graham, do you have cannons fitted to your wings? if you do, are they removeable?
cheers
Baz
Hello Baz
Wow thats quite a feat of engineering, a bit out of my skill range its a great way out of a big problem. I considered an A frame on a trailer but did not like the look of the sability in high cross winds, also the tail overhangs the lorry by 10Ft and would hit the wings. I finally checked the regs and found I can just carry my wings flat, one stacked on the other using my 7.5 Ton lorry as a towing vehicle, would’nt be legal as you know with a 4X4. I have a hyab on the lorry and use that to lift the wings into place, should take no more than 20 minutes with a bit of practice.
The only drawback is having a 40Ft long train, but I just take it slow and steady.
Yes I have the cannons, they slide on and off.
Cheers
Graham
That depends on the engine Graham it should say which way it turns? Your first pic on your site shows right hand rotation prop as viewed from cockpit and last one shows left hand rotation??
With our Hydraulic drive from the Meteor the prop can rotate in either direction, I think I have made a serious error with the prop which cannot be easily rectified, what is they say measure twice cut once!!!!!:o
Thanks Graham.. interesting to note the engine is left hand rotation compared to right hand in our Lancaster.
OOPS have I make a school boy error with the blade rotation??? Prop rotates clockwise looking from front.
Look forward to seeing pics of her complete with kill markings etc..
Should have the wings and other bits and pieces fitted this week you can see more pics and a video here at the bottom of the page.

Thanks Stuart. I zoomed in a bit and it looks like your right! Excellent Job Graham she looks really great now!!
Thanks Peter must admit I am pleased how She turned out there were times when I thought I would never get there.:(
looks like the blades are masked up for the yellow tips.
I lived about 4 miles from Hylands park for most of my life, I move away and Graham comes to town; typical!
Seems like a nice spot we will be set up on the crossroads just inside the main gate. They kept us away from the house after I warned them it might get a bit noisy.:diablo:
Something looks odd with the prop Graham? Is there tape or paper on the blades at the tips?
Hello Peter
Stuarts spot on its masking for the yellow tips. Had enough of spraying and masking, the sun was out and could’nt wait to get Her out of the shed a moment longer.:) The lorry is in there now about to be painted RAF blue.
Great stuff.
Perhaps it can come to a similiar event at Smeatharpe the next day ?

Thats just up the road from me havent heard a thing about it until now
When I get the Spitfire !
The hurricane is quite a lump.
Thats just up the road from me havent heard a thing about it until now.
I’ve a trailer hire company, thats the biggest I have, it’s only ever had aeroplanes on it, Spitfires, Hurricanes and a C150. When I bought it last December I never intended to put it on my fleet, it was built for my 2nd Spitfire etc. It has a 7m tilt bed with a electric winch and you need something understanding to tow it with (my Disco III is perfick) It really is a great trailer.
Made by Bateson trailers, cost a tad over 5k new but, saw one on ebay similar size go for 3.6k.Ideal for your Spitfire Graham. You can lay your wings on the bed etc.
If you buy one, you need to fit it with Sat/nav tracker before some pikey called Stuart ‘bounces off down the road with your shiny new trailer, that’s just what I need!’:diablo:
hope thats been some help
Baz
P.s. this is what she looked like just before I set off from Liverpool to Newquay on Friday night.
Hello Baz
Would have been a great help to have one of these. How do you load the wings are they tilted. I have had a huge headache trying to figure out how to move them. They wont fit on the 7.5 Ton lorry I have to transport the Spit. Am about to modify a 20Ft ex caravan chassis as a trailer, if I lay the wings flat they are just on the legal width limit for towing at 2.55m.
5K seems like a good deal considering all the expence my transport has cost me not to mention the extra Tax and insurance for the lorry.
Has anyone read this book?
There is one in the book club and wondered if it is worth the read.
Thanks.
Brian.
Hello Brian
I have read some excellent articles both serious and humerous in the Telagraph over the years about our passing Hero’s my own good friend Dave Glaser had a write up. I didnt know there was a book and would think it would be an excellent read, how do you buy it? is it available online?
Graham
Graham,
Sounds like you need to mount a large radially etched perspex disc, with a yellow perimeter band, to the spinner. 🙂
Mark
Shiny new prop fitted:)
