Best of luck Graham, is there much more to do before then?

Nearly there now just elevators to paint, add Kill markings and aircraft serial re-fit the BFP, the K Gass has developed another leak but she seems to start fine without it. Has a few minor water leaks, nothing serious. Have still to Fit the aireal and mirror, probably another twenty small jobs i have forgotten.

Looking good. My model aircraft had the maple leaf in green:D But was airfix always correct???

Most models seem to have a green leaf including the corgi one. However there are no colour pics of this aircraft and the Canadian Spits had Red maple leafs so it seems inconclusive, this being the case I choose red, this can be rectified if its proven it should be green.
Have pretty much finished the painting just need to add the aircrafts serial and Kill markings.

Had it running again for a little longer, ran out of juice pretty quickly, its a bit sputtery missing alot and was just getting warm when it ran out juice. The turbo intercoolers worked really well as rads, only a few little leaks here and there on the hose connections

You can find the video here at the very bottom of the page. Be warned I really dont know how to edit videos and this takes about 10 to 15 minutes to download on my broadband although i think I have the slowest conection possible.

    More paint

Have finished the roundels, added the maple leaf and the Wing Comanders pennant. There seems to be some argument about wether the maple Leaf should be green or red, could not find a definative answer so chose red, we made the stencils ourselves, three masks for the wing Comander penant, never realised how long all the masking would take then of coarse you have to wait for the paint to dry before masking again and adding the next colour. So far it has taken two of us two weeks just to mask and paint. One wing is complete but my pack of dogs decided it was a good time to play on the wing, luckily for them the paint was hard and so just have a load of muddy footprints to clean off.

Ohhhhh i didnt think of all the control surfaces 😮 Yeh Probably cost quite a bit 😀 Daz Where is the full Spit? Anyway I dont have the money and it will probably not be on sale when i want it. The point would be to get the satisfaction from building a Spit not Buying one. Chris

I have been toying with the idea of scaling up a large scale radio control model plan of a Whirlwind 1:1 and then building it exactly as per instructions. Not really sure what this will mean in real terms ie weight and stress factors at 1:1 but its a case of have a go and see. I guess you could do the same thing with a Spit start with a cockpit and work out, should not cost a fortune over a period of time.

This is a superb project Graham, well done thus far! She certainly looks the part. Very keen to see her running and moving around under her own power. One little nitpick – as this is a Mk.VIII, doe you have a broad chord, pointed rudder to be fitted? And doors for the tailwheel?

I must say that even in primer she really does look like a “real” Spit. Oh for the money, I’d sign up for one and get it over here pronto…

Daz – where does one find information on this flying replica for sale?

Thks she was molded from a real MK VIII so should be correct in appearance not withstanding my MODS. GB do offer a rudder option. I am not really happy with the tail wheel arrangement but it was a real mission getting enough strength into it to be turned by the rudder pedals although i am going to look at it again and try and improve its appearance. As I could not find a suitable British MK VIII she will now be painted as a MK IX as i understand there is no real difference in appearance other than the retracting tail wheel.

Tim Palucka contends that the fuel gave our planes superior altitude, manoeuvrability and rate of climb, enabling them to dodge the Luftwaffe.

Since when did higher octane fuel improve manoeuvrability ?, more power tends to reduce manoeuvrability not increase it.
Also I dont think many of our Pilots managed to dodge the Luftwaffe our casualty rates were enormous.
I think the problem is that the US really doesnt have much history when its compared to Britain its hundreds of years as compared to thousands of years. There are so many US made films which steal British achievements this report is nothing new. Thank God that Peter Jackson is doing Dambusters and not Micheal Bay.:)

Doesnt look like much of a match, as you note exhausts are different, I think if I had a Model from the B of B film i certainly would not re-paint it. Probably one of those stories Old people tell young people.;)

“Although you are looking at around 20K for a bog standard sit on the lawn and look pretty model,”

Or buy an ex BoB Film Hurricane for 8K, for sale in the back of Flypast.
Any info on this one, where ect.

Well there are Replicas and replicas, I dont know anything about the B of B replicas sounds like a bargain at 8K. One thing I will say is that apart from the UC GB Spits are imensely strong, you can jump up and down on the wing tip without anything moving, mine has had a a 750Kg engine welded onto the front without any problems from the original frame. 😀

Ahhh thanks for that xD I have one final question, from the ‘bog standard sit on the grass one’ how much do you think it would cost to get one flying? Is it even possible? Thanks again Chris

Flying not likely, no working elevators, rudders or ailerons not to mention flaps, no shocks in the U/C, centre of gravity god knows where, probably would leave the ground if you went fast enough wouldn’t like to say how long for though :diablo:
I would not like to say whats its cost over the ten years apart from the hardware thats gone into it, I am pretty unskilled at making things so have had to hire allot of help. Lots of bits have been made specifically and things have been modified as problems appear. Its all trial and error with a thing like this, you just have to dive in and take on one problem at a time.
