Evening Graham, Here’s a scan of a Browning being inserted into the rear end of a Whitley, from the exellent ‘British Aircraft Armament vol 2’ by R Wallace Clarke. It looks identical to the wing mounted guns. The box fitted below the cocking slot (?) is a safety catch. There is also a close up photo of the flash eliminator and I could sort you out a piccy of the safety if you need it. All the best, Ian.

Hello Ian thanks for the pictures, will have to look out for that book!

Very nice fighter Ace dont suppose you want to swap for a 20mm? Actually bought some superb models for a fraction of the price of a deact. Strange thing anyone can own a deactivated gun but you can only buy a model or replica if you are one of the following. How strange the law can be sometimes.

THIS IS TO COMPLY WITH THE “Serious crime reduction bill” NOW IN FORCE.
This does not apply to the MILITARY, SECURITY FORCES, TV & FILM COMPANIES, OFFICIAL RE-ENACTORS OR OVERSEAS.

Flash eliminators not a problem to source. How many do you need?

Hopefully they will have them fitted if not I’ll get in touch. The main thing considering what they are going to cost is that they are Turret guns and not wing mounted, still a little unsure how to asses this. I guess if they have flash eliminators thats a good start but not a 100% quarantee.

As Tangmere and I were discussing earlier turret guns and the Mosquito’s machine guns are normally fitted with flash hiders. That doesn’t mean that they are not turret guns if there are no flash hiders as these were only sheet metal so may have succomed to the passage of time also there is a possibility that they were unscrwewed at some stage and subsequently lost. Added to that is the fact that not all turret guns had flash hiders as far as I know. Sorry not to be more positive.

Thanks Mike I understand the mountings on the turret/wing mounted guns are different? Can you confirm or deny this?

Turret or wing mounted what is the difference??

Hello All and thankyou for the info, I have located a pair of English version 303Brownings i wont tell you what they are costing its scary. I have one more request can anyone tell me the difference between the wing mounted and turret mounted guns? A picture of the turret version would be even better before I hand over my hard earned cash and buy a lemon.

    Thanks again

These altimeters work on the aneroid principle and are known as simple altimeters the altimeter is calibrated to isothermal law which assumes a constant temperature of 10’c at all heights. This tends to give large errors. This altimeter was being replaced in operational aircraft at the outbreak of war. However they remained in service for many years and are sometimes seen in the pilots position in larger aircraft i.e. Sunderland and Stirling 🙂 Nice piece there will be a date on the face.

I just noticed its dated 1942 on the rear of the case but this is most likely a service date there should be another on the face that will be the date of manufacture, i would guess around 38/39.

Graham, which B&Q kitchen did you go for?

Couldnt tell you the wife chose it, its only chip board covered crap, they wanted 3K to fit it (thats £45 per hour give or take) 🙁 luckily i found a mate to do it, makes me think how much would all the projects you see on here really cost if you worked out the labour at £25 or £30+ an hour. You need much more skill than a Kitchen fitter i know that. The Mossey Rep might not be perfect but it took 10 years of pretty continuous work to make. Its gets a bit of a slating but who else world wide has had a goes at making a 1:1 Mosquito replica? in that respect i think its unique. I guess if you follow that to its logical conclusion its rarer than the real thing:diablo: To put things in perspective Whats a real mosquito worth? £1,000,000, £500,000 I dont know, for that you could have two or three complete Squadrons of replicas so I reckon its good value.

    Kitchen or Mosquito?????

    Mike

This already has debated see previous threads, its not perfect but its pretty close. would cost a small fortune to build from scratch, just had a quote from B&Q for a new kitchen they want 6.8K for as load of veneered chipboard, sort of puts the price/value of this replica in proportion. 😮

Now that is something you do not see everyday! Too bad it didnt come with the aircraft it was once mounted to!

Pity its sectioned you could stick it in your Lanc Peter, probably uses less juice than a Merlin LOL:dev2:

I’m very impressed. Well done. Let me know if there’s any cheap houses either side of you on the market in the near future, I might just have to buy one to live close to that wonderful sound – might persuade the other half to divorce me but that’s a small price to pay :diablo:

I suggested a small petrol tax on my closest neighbours in return for hearing those sweet tones, they didn’t seem impressed “there could be some cheap properties for sale if the local noise pollution gets worse” quote from the local neighbourhood watch committee.

It is perfectly acceptable to swear like a B*&%*&d when rowing 😉 As an oarsman myself can confirm that. 😀

That aside great project Graham and look forward to being able to see it at full throttle myself one day!!

    Jon

Involuntary reaction I’m afraid LOL, more fun soon essential additional testing required as soon as my new boost lead arrives:diablo:
