Sounds good Graham! When is the first public run?

Well fingers crossed and am feeling pretty confident will be at
5th May Popham Aero/Autojumble & Classic Vehicle Rally & Fly-in its a really great small event, here is the location for anyone that doesn’t know it.
The airfield lies just to the north of the east-west A303 about ten miles south west of Basingstoke. To the south of the A303 is a fairly large and dense wooded area, which stands out well on even the haziest of days. To the east of the field is a service station and on the western edge of the field are three hangars and a water tower in the north west corner. A small white shooting tower lies just to the northwest of the field and nearer to the runway are some grain silos. There are no formal visual reporting points but the villages of Overton and Whitchurch are good feature for traffic arriving from the north and northwest, Bullington Cross (junction of the A34 and A303) to the West, Alresford to the South, and Alton to the South East. Also to the north of Overton is Kingsclere mast which is 500ft agl. stands out well.

The junction of the east-west A303 and north/south A34 is known as Bullington Cross and is a good reference point for traffic from the west as it also conveniently marks the eastern edge of the Middle Wallop CMATZ stub. Traffic arriving from the east will easily see Basingstoke and the “split” of the M3 and A303. Finally, from the southeast, the town of New Alresford stands out well with the small lake on its north eastern fringe.

The nearest rail connection is Micheldever Station (about a twenty minute walk) with hourly trains to Waterloo and Winchester / Southampton. If you call us when inbound we can call taxi for you. These have to come from either Winchester or Basingstoke so we can call the appropriate company relevant to your needs. We can also advise of limited local B&B accommodation

Heres a link to their website http://www.popham-airfield.co.uk/Index.htm

    Graham,
Thanks for keeping the updates coming! Quick question, where on the tail will the hot air vent from and also, was it a no go for mounting these under the wings or somewhere?

Rads in the wings would be best if you are keeping the wings on all the time, with folding or detachable wings its allot more complicated, plus with allot of static running it’s best to have fans and they would fit in the cowlings, wing rads work great at speed but on the ground not so good. Also we can run the engine with the wings off so we can test it in my shed, cant get the wings on in there.
There is a half inch gap all around the rudder where it attaches to the tail and further venting on the underside, the hot air will be pushed straight out the back by a third fan, either that or the cockpits going to get hot LOL.

We have now replaced that horrible old oil tank with a pair of shiny new intercoolers. Each has a fan and a third fan will blow hot air out of the tail. We havent tested these units but they are big with 76mm inlets and outlets. The picture makes them looked deceptively small. Intercoolers are designed to cool hot air from turbos but i have been assured they will cope with liquid coolant and they are much larger than any radiators which are readily available. We have finally made a start on prep works for paint (lots of sanding LOL)
The prop hub/hydraulic arrangement is now with a qualified engineer who give us something we can attach and run with. So fingers crossed she will be finished for the spring.;)

I hired my replica Spitfire many years ago to the Pearl Harbour production team. The money you get for hire depends on whose doing the hiring. Hollywood movies have big budgets smaller productions do not.The flying Spitfire’s were paid £3K an hour. My Replica was portrayed as RF-M with battle damage for the ground shots. You should get a written contract and insist on insurance. They can get pretty roughly treated on set, film directors move fast and the aircraft are man handled by hoards of extras into various positions. I got £3K and they had it about two weeks, they painted it and made quite a few holes which i had to repair, at one stage they put the fork of a fork lift straight through the wing so be aware and insist on being present during filming. I did get given some nice bits off the set and it was a great experiance up close to lots of Flying Spitfires.

I heard this story from an aircraft engineer who I buy parts from. He went to collect a Lancaster from Canada, purchased by a chap well known in aviation circles in the UK. They were giving it a service prior to flying it back to the UK. The Canadian Heritage rule was invoked and the aircraft stayed where it was. I don’t know what became of that particular Lancaster?

This all happened over 30 years ago so it seems this legislation has been around a while. It also seems to be selective as many parts and aircraft criss cross over the pond. Personally, I don’t see an issue with this as it certainly seems to be a two way trade. I know many people who lament aviation stuff going abroad, but there are a lot of bits coming back to Britain. The restoration process should transcend Country borders and go where it’s most likely to be restored. This sort of legislation while on the face of it has good intentions can be divisive and work against the best interest of the aircraft in question.

Just had this reply from the auction house that helps not a bit, spending 160K will surely require more proof than a name witten on the leg?

Thank you for your enquiry with regards to the Douglas Bader collection. I believe the leg has his name on as well, I can confirm this. None of the items are for sale individually. Offers are invited at £160,000 and above.

All joking aside its got to be the ultimate in any Bader collection but what is the provenance apart from a name on the box?

    Graham,
canopy was a spareable item, what is the proof?

Mind you, as this Lanc probably never saw action the canopy as fitted was probably the same one as WO.

Harry Holmes was mentioned above, anybody know if he is still alive?

The info i have is as follows, I have the names of all the owners. The Turret was removed when it arrived at flight re-fueling by the first owner ( name known) This was standard cpractice for aircraft being converted for flight re-fueling, I believe for use as a planter, it then past to a collector(name known) who recently past it to the contact I got it from.
Why don’t you think this Lanc didnt see action?it was damaged after 8 days with 166. Now i have the dates I am having the ORB of 166 researched so that should settle it.
