You are getting your favourite Dunlop numbers muddled, Graham.

4040 is the Spitfire Triple Brake Pressure Guage, 2040 is what is on your grip, as the picture shows quite clearly.

Ah yes get over excited about numbers again, I am confused, it seems the only real difference is the omission of the pillor and the brake lever that sits on it, did Canadian Hurricanes use brass firing butons?? So it’s a Hurricane grip modified by removing the brake lever to fit a Harvard?? is that a fair comment?

My honest opinion is that it is Harvard. When you won it on Ebay it had the stainless bolts fitted that hold the retaining piece (that restrains the brass pneumatic gun tubes). This implies Harvard as the Harvard had no need for a brake lever. The fact there is a piece of Bowden Cable in the holder is a complete ‘herring rouge’ it has probably ‘fallen into this position’ as without a brake lever that would be pointless.

Having said all that, if you asking can it be fitted to a Hurricane? Well yes it can provided you fit the correct brake lever post and the parking catch.

Think you might have got the AH number wrong…hope this all helps? Any luck with the skin old chap?

Have turned both my workshops upside down looking for that skin, its not with all the other panels i have in a box, I think i have put it somewhere safe!!!!. Its triangular with a steep curve, looks like it was fitted around the windscreen. It will turn up , we are having a major tidy up.

Its definately marked AH 4040 (see picture) which was i understand used on the Hurricane . The bit of brake cable is welded in with corrosion I don’t think its been added. This may have been used on a Harvard but it seems to me that their is no difference in the grip design. I also have an original grip sat on top of a Hurricane column and other than the post that holds the brake lever there’s no difference, my grip does have a bako button not brass.
Perhaps these grips were used in both aircraft types? The plate that covers the air tubes to the button is also present on the Hurricane grip. will upload some pics seems I have exceeded my quota.

    Cooling

Have fitted after much deliberation a 50 gallon tank in the tail. As long as it keeps her cool for 10 to 15 minutes will be ok. Going to have attachments to connect intercoolers when the wings are on. The old 5 gallon Jerry can in front of the main tank will be connected as the expansion tank. Going to reverse the flow in the carb header rather than blank it off completely. Going to remove the two into one pipe shown at he back and run three feeds back to the tank in the tail. One from each rear head outlet and one from the rear of the header. The front end of the header will be blanked off so the water comming out of the heads at the front will flow back through the header.
The cooling drawing Peter listed was invaluable thanks! We will be connecting everthing up next week, oil and water. šŸ™‚

oops posted this on the wrong thread should be in MKVIII and a meteor. have moved the picture’s there.

As we are talking about Spitfires here I will stick to that type. Most Spitfires left the factory in a matt finish. However some were polished to increase their performance (DP845 perhaps?) either as ‘one-off’ test aircraft or sometimes in service, but generally the matt finish was the norm. In WWII both synthetic (the precurser to our modern 2-pack polyurethene paints) and nitro-cellulose based paints were used. Look on a Spitfire and you may see a stencil reading ‘DTD 308 C’, that stands for Directorate of Technical Development specification 308 Cellulose paint.

Not sure where you get the idea that ‘shiny’ paint is the norm, thats all rather 1980’s – today we usually go for compromise and choose satin or eggshell finishes that are sympathetic to the historic look but are easier to maintain in good condition. Matt paint does tend to absorb marks and oil contamination and although this is an authentic appearance it is not always desirable from the owner/operators point of view. Cellulose paints are still the norm for fabric covered parts of the airframe (just the rudder and elevators on a Spitfire) but people have used 2-pack paints with a plasticing agent succesfully on fabric.

Here is a Picture of Squadron Leader Dave Glasers MKVIII it seems to have all the paint stripped and the alloy polished i guess to make it faster? Does anyone know any more about this aircraft? Dave was a good friend of mine sadly missed.

…and I was able to reassure him, shortly before he passed away.

    Mark

Mark I heard once that Raymond Baxter was the only pilot ever to take a shot at a VII Rocket, apparently it took off right in front of him and he gave it a quick burst, luckily for him he missed, can you confirm this story?

Can’t be the one on the left ,her pants aren’t brown, the one on the right is brown all over ,so when he takes his trousers off his pants don’t show.

R.e colour schemes, why not forget that it could have been a mk VIII, (as you are making a few modifications any way) , that way you can paint it in any scheme that you want.

Good point, although he MK VIII is my Favorite Spitfire. it could be a MKIX . We are trying to make a four bladed prop now by mating two of our single piece (repro) Watts ones together, so the prop will look right. A two blade single piece will spoil the look. We already make a 3 blade Paragon so it should be possible. We have two entires for paint scheme’s already both of which I really like.

An obvious choice would be a SEAC-painted MkVIII, but I rather like the Med-based Spit VIII schemes – they were rather more colourful, in my opinion. Especially like the desert-marked ones šŸ™‚
