Are they really missile launches? Just because it appears to be rising vertical, or near vertical,does not mean that it is a ballistic launch. Basic understanding of perspective comes into play here. You do understand perspective?
Aircraft contrails have been fooling people for years and especially at sunset. The light conditions accentuate the contrail, wind conditions altitudes can dissipate the contrail and the result due to perspective is interpreted as a ballistic missile launch. That is why with edited footage, as shown on CBS, observers such as Doug Richardson (Jane’s) can be fooled.
It also initially fooled Patrick Minnis from NASA. Mr Minnis is a contrail expert in the Science Directorate at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

Airliners with their highly reflective paint schemes can and do produce glare and reflection. Gil Leyvas with his helo camera has zoomed into the contrail at extreme range. His optics have already foreshortened the persistent contrail. Now consider that light claimed to be a ‘rocket engine’ is acutally just reflection as the airliner continues its approach to the mainland?
Look at all the ‘rocket engines’ on this airliner! Now imagine that airliner being filmed at range and at the angle that Gil Leyvas filmed the event on 8th Nov?

Thanks for posting. The time line matches up with the UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11 rather than the America West Boeing 757.
It certainly matches up with the non-persistent contrail that was filmed as the airliner approached the coast. In the right conditions the MD-11 being tri-engined can certainly produce a large blended contrail.

I saw a missile launch. I have Jane’s Defence Group saying it was a missile launch and we have a NOTAM that states that the area is used by the Navy for missile testing. It was a missile.

Ballistic missile launches are governed by the issuing of NOTAMs. You simply can’t launch a ballistic missile without the safety of the areas and the airspace in place. At that time two scheduled airliners were noted so where is the NOTAM alerting the crew of both that MD-11 and Boeing 757.
In your fantasy world the sub launched ballstic missile launch has taken place. In reality no such launch has taken place. You are basing your fantasy on an edited film purely because you think that the trail is going up into the sky.

The airliner has produced a persistent contrail and continues on its path towards the coast. It then continues its path producing a non-persistent contrail. A NOTAM is a Notice to Airmen and it appears to me that you know nothing about civilian/military flight ops. A NOTAM will repeat in an area that has repetitive operations. Like military flight training or missile testing.:rolleyes:
Since the NOTAM reported on missle testing aircraft have to stay out of the area during the entire time that the NOTAM lists.

It is a notice to mariners for the ranges that have been in use for decades. If a ballistic missile, or any other launch that would cause danger to an aircraft, then a NOTAM would be issued. For example this NOTAM that the conspiracy nuts were jumping all over to prove that a NOTAM had been issued for a missile launch.

Some more excellent analysis on the possibility that it was United Parcel Service Flight UPS902. Flight 902 was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11. The MD-11 is a tri-engined airliner. It would certainly account for the lack of distinct separated contrails in the later stages of the video.

A missle was launched close to the US in international waters. It wasn’t heading torward the US mainland. Which brings up an interesting point. If it was an aircraft flying to the US then the contrail should have flown over the chopper and LA on its way to wherever it was going. The aircraft should have been picked up on ATC and its transponder would have reported its ID. We have none of that.
Russia/China see weakness in us so IMO they did this to say “Ha! We caught you off guard and the only reason why the West Coast isn’t under a mushroom cloud is because we didn’t feel like doing that….today.”
We only have the edited footage from the news camera crew. It is easy for the TV station to edit to what they want to show. They show a massive contrail that resembles a ballistic missile launch. Look it goes up in the air they cry so it can’t be an aircraft!

The airliner is travelling towards the coast. From the flightaware data the likely candidate was at 37,000 feet. The persistent contrail dissipates as the airliner approaches the warmer air over the coast.
All we see is edited footage cut short. The TV station chose to highlight the dramatic plume with its apparent vertical motion. Anyone with basic understanding of perspective will see that the airliner contrail was always horizontal. If the full footage was presented you will more than likely see the airliner passing by the location of the helo. It makes great TV news to say that the plume and ‘missile’ went out away from the coast.

If Jane’s Defence Group says its a missle then I agree with them. They said it looked like the vapor trail coming from a solid rocket motor from an SLBM. I’ve lived in Central Florida for 35 years and have seen plenty of rocket and space shuttle launches. The vapor trail of the California missle reminded me of the vapor trail of the space shuttle’s solid rocket boosters. Hell I’ve seen space shuttle launches and contrails from high flying far away aircraft in the sky at the same time and there is a big difference in them.
The camera man said he filmed the trail for 10 minutes well it does take several minutes for an aircraft contrail and SRB smoke to dissipate long after the aircraft has passed or missle/rocket motor has burned out.
Btw our government isn’t going to admit that a Russian or Chinese boomer got that close and got caught with their pants down.
I think that Jane’s Defence Rockets and Missiles Editor will be changing his mind when he sees that the full footage wasn’t shown by the news agency?

The following images prove that it was no missile. The helo cameraman admitted that he filmed the trail for 10 minutes. No ballistic missile would be in view for that length of time. As the airliner approaches the coast the contrail dissapates and it carries on its easterly heading.
