    Cherry Ripe,
ASCC is now ASIC as of 2005. ASCC did not designate missiles, radars etc. Different working groups and organisations designate those. ASCC, now ASIC, designate aircraft/helos only. Also the myth that NATO designates codenames. NATO as an organisation designates nothing.

    http://www.dtic.mil/asic/

The ASCC now ASIC is assigned the following and nothing else:

    FSU Fighters
    FSU Bombers
    FSU Cargo/Transports
    FSU Helicopters
    FSU Miscellaneous

    PRC Fighters
    PRC Bombers
    PRC Cargo/Transports
    PRC Helicopters
    PRC Miscellaneous

The fundamental flaw to your arguement is that the codename is allocated a designator. Examples SA-3 GOA and SS-N-19 SHIPWRECK.

UPDATE: bmal removed most details since they are not yet confirmed, and now it generally shows…..

The original BMAL link was very detailed. I would suggest that this was the some of the info in the leaked document featured in the following.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-11590130

“An MP is to seek “urgent clarification” from the UK government after leaked documents suggested RAF Lossiemouth would be run down over the next year.

The papers, seen by SNP member for Moray – Angus Robertson, implied the base’s Tornado aircraft could be transferred to a base in Norfolk.

The Ministry of Defence has said no final decision has been made….”

    Thanks for the links Teej.
I must admit I thought it would be nice to see the info here in a post – as a last hoorah for the old dog!

    No problem.

Teej, you’ve won the prize for least surprising news of the year!:D Maybe if he hadn’t been so partisan in the past people may listen.

    🙂

Perhaps Sharkey can be persuaded to start posting on here? It would certainly liven up the forum!

Can anyone here give a reliable synopsis on the state of the MR.4 at the time of chop?
ie, how many aircraft completed, to what level were they fittted out with operational equipment, how many flown and likely in service date etc.

Have a look through the following forum.

Poster ‘ShortFatOne’ was one of the test Pilots on MRA4. A PM to him might provide you the answer direct from the horse’s mouth? It is all history now!

The Warton based MRA4, serial ZJ514 (PA04), flew after a long period of downtime on September 6th 2010.

Sharkey Ward is discussing the subject of the Harrier GR on the following. It has a comments section with Sharkey posting. He isn’t happy that the Harrier is being scrapped in UK service!

What kind of source is this? Is it a blog, or the plan outlined in there has an officiality to it?

BMAL have many sources. Many aviation enthusiasts are serving members. In those communities things leak. It is clear that BMAL has contacts and sources within certain elements of HM Forces. Their info on the Harrier fleet and timetables regarding that fleet have been spot on.

    Mod Edit: Quoted post deleted.

In times of emergency and requirement, just like the Harrier fleet, the ability is going to be there to deploy at least another Squadron on the carriers, if not more. You have been around long enough to know that some peacetime unservicabilites will not impact on emergency situations and in producing an airframe fit for combat operations. Take for example the Sea Harrier fleet deployed for Operation Corporate. All stops pulled to meet the emergency situation. It will be no different with the F-35 fleet and their ability to deploy on the carriers.

Certainly agree with all your post.
Strangest descission for me though is finishing with Sentinal which I thought was doing some of the Nimrod R.1 work.
Would think that it is a comparatively low cost aircraft to operate and maintain – I don’t see the basis for this move at all.

Nimrod R1 and Sentinel are two entirely differently rolled platforms. Looking for savings the Sentinels were probably offered up in order for a little bit of claw back due to the money invested in RC-135s. It looks like something had to go within the operational ISTAR fleet. SIGINT will always take priority within the UK intelligence community.

    Any thoughts on bases?

Lossie will survive its station rebuild programme to become the JCA base?

Wittering will close after Harrier rundown and non-flying units there will relocate.

Waddington will become quiter now, the Sentinal R.1 has been chopped (very odd decission) and the Nimrod R.1 to go next year, with flying training to centre at Valley could Leeming go aswel?

Also can you see both Odiham and Benson surviving?

be great to hear your views on this

I see Wittering remaining as a non-flying station as per the BMAL link.

Waddington will be lively with the Red Arrows due to move in!

Yet wales has no front line fighter or strike squadrons… and RAF Leuchars is about 7 miles from Dundee, and 16 from Glenrothes.

Ahh yes, so when I don’t come around to your opinion, I’m a troll. Don’t worry, I’m used to that line of argument! In fact, Marc Sampaix has reminded me for about 6 years that I am a pathetic troll, I should go play orange and lemon with Jon Jake because we both are failures like the Eurofighter, that my mother is this that and the other. Really, you’re wasting your time trying to insult me into accepting your opinion over my own, you’ll just drive yourself insane trying, just like he did 🙂

Of course you are trolling over your ‘Scotland’ claims. Either that or you are completely naive about the history of RAF Lossiemouth and why certain units utilised the station.

    http://www.raf.mod.uk/raflossiemouth/aboutus/history.cfm

‘Major changes took place in 1993 with the Buccaneer anti-shipping squadrons starting to be replaced by the Tornado. On 1 October 12(B) Squadron lost its Buccaneers but kept its squadron number-plate when re-equipped with Tornados. On 1 November, the Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit, renamed XV(Reserve) Squadron arrived from RAF Honington in Suffolk.

In April 1994, 208 Squadron was disbanded and was replaced by 617 Squadron, which transferred with their Tornados from RAF Marham in Norfolk. Although 48 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment left Lossiemouth for Honington on 1 July 1996, RAF Lossiemouth continued to be one of the busiest front-line stations in the RAF with 3 Tornado Squadrons, including XV(Reserve) Squadron, 16(Reserve) Squadron (previously 226 OCU) and ‘D’ Flight, 202 Squadron with their Sea Kings. This line-up continued until July 2000, when the Jaguars left for RAF Coltishall in Norfolk; however, with the increase in size of XV(Reserve) Squadron in 1999 following the closure of the Tri-national Tornado Training Establishment at RAF Cottesmore, the arrival of the Tornados of 14 Squadron from RAF Brüggen in January 2001, RAF Lossiemouth has become the busiest fast-jet station in the Royal Air Force. In May 2001, 51 RAF Regiment Squadron was reformed and now sits with 2622 Auxiliary Squadron under the newly formed 5 Force Protection Wing Headquarters at RAF Lossiemouth.

Your vision of placing operational Squadrons in Wales is completely ignorant. History and the threats faced dictated the location and continued use of RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Leuchars. In regards to national and NATO interests your ‘Wales’ vision brings nothing to the table. At RAF Lossiemouth the Tornado maritime strike Squadron was assigned to NATO (SACLANT) and it made perfect sense after drawdown of RAF Germany to locate Tornado GR at two main operating bases in the UK. It made perfect use of existing facilities and perfect for utilisation and management of a pooled fleet of Tornado GR.
