The history of the U.K.s foreign policy isn’t spotless.
You’re right – but the thread started off talking specifically about US policy towards Cuba.
Oh, and my uncle fought in Korea and so did a lot of other British servicemen. Quite a lot of them never came home. Their shades are no doubt highly gratified by your flippant disregard of their sacrifice.
Did someone mention double standards?????
witness Grey Area’s comments.
Care to explain, John?
Was it the bit where I pointed out that the USA has no qualms about dealing with and supporting approved dictators? Like (for instance) Pinochet in Chile in the 1970s, Saddam Hussein in the 1980s and, indeed, Batista and a whole other bunch of Central American unsavouries.
If that’s what you’re getting at, then the double standards aren’t mine!
Prove me wrong………
Favourite live album? “Bursting Out” by Jethro Tull.
Do you notice how they love dictatorships? From afar that is.
Oh, but the US Government adores dictatorships – dictatorships are great for business, and what’s good for business is good for Uncle Sam.
So long as the dictator is on the payroll, of course. Otherwise, he’s probably a Communist and is, therefore, a Very Bad Thing Indeed.
Unless he’s Chinese.
BTW – Castro is, indeed, a dictator. He became one when he overthrew Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar, who was also a dictator backed by the US Goverment and the Mafia. On the payroll, see?
Who does the money go to, what do they do with it, and what do you get in return?
This is that LAAS International membership drive by the back door again, isn’t it?
In my opinion – and it’s only an opinion – they seem to be trying to legitimise themselves as the sole representatives of spotters everywhere.
They don’t represent me, and never have in 30-odd years as an aviation enthusiast, so I’ll be damned if they’re getting £15 of my hard-earned.
Do you remember them?
Yes.
Joe’s to much of a widdler for me,
Ignore his personal problems and concentrate on his guitar-playing!!! 😀
Great shots, Kaplan Dig.
Did someone mention Ringway on Saturday??? 😀
1) B737 EI-BFC in the green Aer Lingus Dot Com scheme
2) Fokker 100 EI-DFC of EU Jet (Note sunshine)
3) Airbus A321 TC-KTY of KTHY
4) TC-KTY again.
🙂
LOL @ Sauron! 😀
BTW – did you know that the US Goverment is considering upping official appropriation to Cuban dissident groups to over $100 million? (Source – USAID website)
Cuba’s GDP under US sanctions in FY 2003 was US$ 31.59 billion, while that of the USA in FY2003 was US$ 10.98 trillion – roughly 300 times more. (Source – CIA World Factbook)
Anyone care to imagine the reaction of the FBI and State Department to an amount equivalent to the same fraction of the US GDP – ie, roughly US$30 billion(!!!) – being tranferred annually directly from a foreign government to subversive groups within the USA for the avowed purpose of helping to topple the US Government?
In addition to the considerable resources of the US government, there is the funding from private groups like the Cuban-American National Foundation (CANF), with its known links to anti-Cuban terrorist groups.
Remember also that the US government and fanatical elements of the Cuban exile community have sponsored or participated directly in an abortive military invasion and numerous acts of sabotage in Cuba since 1950.
How many such acts has Cuba carried out against the USA?
And please, for God’s sake, don’t bring up the Soviet missiles – the US missiles in Turkey were just as close to the Soviet Union.
Most right-minded people would do that whatever the WX! 😀
You could always ask Skylinerworld to come back to the general discussion.
He is back, under a different name and, I’m extremely happy to say, behaving in an exemplary manner and making a valuable contribution to the Commercial Aviation forum.
Go on give us a translation…
It’s raining quite a lot.
Example 😀 ?
What, Ren? Never heard of Joe Satriani? 😮
An associate has just rung to tell me that no flight plans back to LHR for diverted aircraft will be accepted before 20:00.
Must be pretty “challenging” down LHR way at the moment – the precipitation radar on the BBC Weather website shows a string of dark red echoes (showing torrential rainfall) stretching from W London to the Severn. 😮
Castro is a communist dictator who oppresses and murders people who oppose him.
Not even the Cuban emigres make the latter claim any more, pluto77189, so what’s your source for such a statement? You’re making this “classmate” of yours up, aren’t you?
Is it the fact that Castro is a “Communist” that makes him An Evil Man, unlike US-backed dictators who really did murder those who spoke out against them – such as Pinochet?
