I think you have answered your own question. Parachutes were used by balloonists more than 200 years ago to jump from or escape from balloons. I know you are the OP, but that really would be bending the rules, wouldn’t it??
Leonardo da Vinci designed a parachute back in the 15th century, although history does not record whether he managed to persuade anyone to test it.
