Finding an alternative fuel for combat aircraft must be a big challenge, there don’t seem to be any easy options anyway.

I like the idea of being able to use manned aircraft as unmanned aircraft, like the Boeing Little Bird demonstrator helicopter http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2006/q3/060712c_nr.html

The prototype aircraft is validating an autonomous flight control system that could be added to any manned aircraft. This automated flight control system includes integrated weapons systems, sensors and a ground control station. Cerchie said the entire package could be retrofitted to most existing rotorcraft.

Sending an unmanned Typhoon to attack targets in a high threat environment or an unmanned Merlin to evacuate people from a site contaminated by nuclear, biological or chemical substances seems like a very desirable capability.

It should be very cost effective too, hopefully just adding extra software to existing hardware and communication capabilities.

As for RN ships in Lebanese ports, saw that on the news too: when and why do RN Type 42’s sometime not have the protective domes of the fire control radars for Sea Dart installed?

I wondered that too  does it improve performance?

It’s a shame no one has any decent sized amphibious aircraft or Ekranoplans for these situations, they would get the job done a lot quicker.

In what way is it better than the latest Aegis system with ESSM, SM-2 Block IIIB, SM-2 Block IV, and SM-3?

That post is from the 11th February 2006 and it wasn’t my personal opinion, I don’t know either way really, I was just repeating something I had read.

The PAAMS is European so I’m sure it was a world beater for a short time but I wouldn’t be surprised if the USA can match or surpass it already.

Interesting pic. No ski-jump, it would have been a job and half to get off such a small ship with much of a load onboard a Harrier.

I would imagine this pic was created before the ski-jump became the accepted way of operating Harrier’s off small ships. If I remember correctly the flightdeck of this concept had a turntable to make it easier to turn the Harrier’s around on the narrow deck.

Unless it can extend the range of its guns it is a sitting duck in almost every modern country in the world. MANPADs are too much of a threat to this aircraft type and quite a few have been brought down.
If you go fitting it with lots of smart weapons then why not get rid of all the guns and alter the cargo bay to become a huge bomb bay, keep all the sensors and just use tiny GPS guided bombs. Its 20 ton payload would make it a useful bomber, though a change to jet power would help it fly higher and a little faster.

I have to agree, the AC-130 can lay down an impressive amount of low cost firepower but it’s mission can probably be done just as effectively by armed drones with Hellfires and APKWS rockets or loitering attack missiles such as the Surveilling Miniature Attack Cruise Missile http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/strikeweapons/SMACM/product-SMACM.html

I wonder if a gun turret could be put on a drone like this Bronco installation?

The RN website is rubbish now very sticky ive noticed.

It is, isn’t it. They haven’t even got 800 NAS in the Naval Air Squadrons list! http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/server/show/nav.2236

The gallery section is now very poor compared to what it once was too 🙁

I think 800 Squadron is now flying the GR7 operationally.

Is it just me or has the Royal Navy website gone downhill since the Sea Harrier was retired? The new layout is not as good as the old one.

UK Aircraft Carrier Task Group to Support Major Omani Naval Exercise 18th Apr 2006 http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/server/show/ConWebDoc.5330

The exercise sees the first deployment of the newly formed 800 Naval Air Squadron of the Joint Harrier Force, flying GR7 ground attack Harriers and the participation of Illustrious, is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the Strike Carrier concept in a controlled exercise environment.

Hellfire missiles carried on the wing tip stations were proposed at one time and I think Hydra rockets have been proposed too.

The laser guided rocket called the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=44890 seems like an ideal AC-130 weapon.

Very sad, the only difference I know of is that the Cormorant uses T700 engines instead of the RTM 322. I have heard of problems with fuel line leaks and tail rotor cracks on the Canadian models, a RN Merlin crashed because of a tail rotor failure. I hope these problems will get sorted soon as the capabilities of the EH-101 are highly regarded.

    Good EH-101 site http://www.targetlock.org.uk/eh101/index.html
