Wings43 Have a good flight.
As our antipodean friend very rightly said been done to death in other threads.
Is it time for a thread merge?
Pom? who are you calling a Pom? No longer PC old boy, it’s Brit now.:D
It’s a shorthand in another place for a humungously large television set, possibly out of proportion to the room in which it is sited, nothing more.
Moggy
I hope you are not suggesting that council houses are small?
Hey, Nobody wants you to leave the thread although that is an interesting response when asked to justify some of the comments made.
Reminds me of the Panda joke.:D
By implication you do not know about the very highly controversial, at the time, series.
Just take a quick look at this
I have been censored before. So I have justification to say that.
I also welcome Moggys response. I found it unfair and snobbish and a generalisation that isn’t helpful. Others may not.
As for wealth, it’s very subjective.
Still suggest you give an example we are all interested why you have this problem and not us.
Your problem is that block of wood on your shoulder. I do not know Moggy personally but think I understand his very dry sense of humour, personally I like it, others may not. I have been on the receiving end and just bite back, but with my tongue very firmly in my cheek.
Helpful? Don’t think anything on here is going to change world opinion.
“I found it unfair and snobbish and a generalisation that isn’t helpful”. At last you got it.
But it’s not funny and this thread brings out all the prejudice that so often rears it’s head on this forum.
When someone writes the name of the dog as if they’ve made a big blow for freedom if speech is makes me wince. Particularly as my own comments here will be possibly deleted as they go against the grain.
It’s not a lack of sense of humour to not find some of the narrow mindedness here funny.
There you go again about deleted comments think it is time you gave examples.
As I said you miss the point entirely. It is you that has a narrow fixated mind. Suggest you try watching Till Death Us Do Part on your Plasma but then again you probably wont get the point.
I did say don’t mention the dog.
Look out here comes the drift police.
Take a deep breath, chill, (chill????) and see the funny side of things.
What have council houses got to do with large plasma screens. I work with / know plenty of wealthy people who have them in abundance and out of proportion.
What exactly is your point or is it just snobbery. Interested to know.
I fully expect this to be censored as I’m criticising a moderator but what exactly do you mean by that comment?
That’s where you find an abundance of them.
I didn’t think size mattered with Plasma/LED, isn’t it the bigger the better?
Are you implying that wealthy people do not live in Council Houses?
Whilst I do not speak for Moggy I don’t think he had his moderators hat on and he is as entitled to post as any forumite.
Bit insulting to suggest that your post will be censored, I don’t see that you have any justification for saying that at all. My experience is that all the moderators on here are fair and reasonable and apply a gentle helm. (Just don’t change thread title unnecessarily:D) Wish I could say the same for all posters.
I think you missed the point. :D:D
the aircrew have never lost yet!
That’s really good to know. What sort of age are the children?
Clearly you have the skills to get the message across.
the ‘council-house plasma tele with sound bar’
Moggy
Ouch, in fact double ouch.
Hasn’t the world moved on I thought all the so called Council Houses have been sold off and even if some still exist I am sure it is not PC to call them that. Isn’t it “affordable” housing? Which of course means subsidised as there is no such thing as “affordable”. Plasma? Think it’s now 85″ Oled 4k curved, after all can afford it on benefits, sorry allowances.
Now don’t start me on pension theft.
Cannot help with specific request but consider joining Friends of Duxford (FOD) on the day, you will get the entrance paid for that day reduced to FOD price and have access to the FOD enclosure with free soft drinks and coffee and biscuits. Contribution appreciated. Enclosure is half seated. Food readily available from vendors but, if there, recommend the Pimms BBQ or the cafe BBQ over others.
We had the Gold enclosure last airshow but will not be doing that again, in our view not remotely worth the money.
. FOD you have to pay for flightline.
If possible also come on the Friday before the air show you will not be disappointed. If you join FOD entrance is free on all none event days. You can join on arrival use the fast track door on extreme right of entrance.
Everything will be all right as long as nobody mentions the … Ah too late.
Seriously though is there not room for both? All us old folks can go on admiring the old film with all its, what are now considered to be, shortcomings. It is, IMHO, a classic of its time.
The new film will be just that and will be watched by many people who have not seen the old film and as long as they enjoy it and the whole thing hasn’t been over dramatised. ( how can anybody think that the story needs changing is beyond me)
Action movies today seem to have to be fast and furious (thinks: that would be a good name for a film, or even a series of films) and I am not sure that the tension building and shear guts that were required for this raid are sufficient to keep a young audiences attention.
Let’s all hope a new film is made, CGI and all, with the story reasonably accurately told. I will not hold my breath as I want to live long enough to see the Shack fly, but I will certainly watch just so I can moan about it if nothing else, and hopefully younger people who would not watch old black and white films will learn about the sacrifice that generation made for us all.
At the last Duxford air show they had a very convincing Laurel and Hardy look alikes, convincing that is if you know who Laurel and Hardy are, many younger people didn’t.
With any luck it may encourage younger people to watch the old film and ask questions about political correctness back then.
Now to move onto the most important issue, the music.
What’s it to be? Absolutely no question there, it just has to be Eric Coates Dam Busters March. Did anybody else used to sing this in music lesson in school?
Got to take Chalkie for a walk now, dam now I’ve mentioned a dog.
Always nice to see old photos whatever the condition anyway and the ones you’ve posted have certainly ‘kept’ well – any more? 🙂
Yes indeed any more please.
Having same trouble with slides, mounted and kept in dark but presumably contaminated with human sweat etc when handles as growing mould.
Not a cheap solution but some years ago a bought a second hand Nikon scanner, cannot remember the exact technical details but I think it scans it with infra red to look at the surface and then deletes anything that shouldn’t be on the surface, this is much easier than trying to clean. I haven’t tried it with mould yet but the results are staggering for dust etc. Away from home at moment otherwise would post an example.
Your examples are eminently suitable for Photoshopping but very time consuming.
Either way the best thing is to get them scanned ASAP before they get worse.
And yes please any more.
Yes if you haven’t visited London before avoid street vendors and go into shops instead they are usually a lot cheaper. Do keep your phone secure.
Buy a public transport card, called an Oyster card, this covers you for travel on all public transport within the Greater London area with a very reasonable daily cap. Cash is not taken on any buses now.
Get registered with Uber taxis as with this prices are fixed, paid by card, and driver does not fix price, route or take money. Just get quote and then book with smart phone.
If you need any more information or help do not hesitate to ask somebody on here will almost certainly be able to help.
Do not make the mistake of thinking that one airshow day at Duxford is anywhere near enough to see the whole place.
If possible go on the Friday before the airshow you will not be disappointed as you will see much practising. If you are like me and like to take your time over exhibits then I would allow yet another day there is plenty to see.
If at all possibly visit the RAF Museum at Cosford. Cosford station is right on site but round travel time is about 5 hours. But here you will find many prototype and research aircraft, every bit as good as Hendon but totally different.
Hendon is easy, free and an absolute must.
Brooklands is well worth a visit and is steeped in motor and plane history. Remains of the first purpose built race track in the world which we allowed to be almost destroyed and very strong aviation links especially with Barnes Wallis. Easy train from London then short bus ride.
The Classic Air Force and Shackleton and Midlands Air Museum are both very well worth a visit and on the same airfield. CAF is free. If you fancy a climb inside a Vulcan the Midland is the place.
Please remember that although many places are “free” they do need and are grateful for all donations.
Surely getting to one of the last Vulcan displays is a must.

Hope you have a very enjoyable stay over here what ever you decide to see.
We will be at a hotel at Stanstead airport if you are there and need a lift. early start though!!
As others have said, you have got your tickets as it is advanced sales only.
