Thanks for that Mike.
I see that the expression “saw the take-off manoeuvre” was used by airsound, which I take to be the sharp bank to right after lift off.
Do you know if this meant that no comment was made at all about the almost 180 wing over several passes later or that the whole display was discussed at the meeting and all approved?
I suppose this must be the case if no censure was made.
PanzerJohn
Thanks for posting that video it has certainly been expertly taken and is very well worth looking at.
I was carefully studying my pictures as they didn’t show the full 180 to see if I had missed the actual moment although I thought I had not.
The other videos I think both taken from Rhymes Barn were inconclusive.
I think this video is conclusive. 9.40 but watch it all.
Certainly a breathtaking moment which we will all remember.
Hope you do not mind have embedded it here
I am sure you are right and we have all seen displays vary over the year. But I have assumed that all are within the envelope agreed and approved and assuming last Saturday was no exception to that we could expect a repeat performance if circumstances allowed.
The commentator at RIAT on Sunday, who I believe was a member of the VTTS team, (please correct me if wrong) made it very clear that there would NOT be a repeat of Saturday’s manoeuvre at that display and there wasn’t.
Having said that I will certainly be going to Eastbourne in the hope that the open sea may encourage a “spirited” display.
On Monday departures 558 took off on 27 flew a low north circuit then on reaching 27 threshold flew directly at the FRIAT grandstand banking left as she reached the stand. I have no wish to exaggerate as I was at the western end of the stand and looking through a lens so it is not clear to me if 558 actually passed over the eastern end of the stand or not. The pictures I posted earlier and the fact my wife was having difficulty lifting the camera high and round enough, it is heavy, would indicate it might have done but only those sat up the east end actually know. Although maybe not as awe inspiring as a heavily banked turn it did raise another round of applause in the enclosure.
Me too. Indeed, that Saturday display reminded me of the old days and I’d like to think we’ll see another like that before she makes her final bow!
Indeed. However, I would imagine that the three authorities not to mention the insurers specify how the aeroplane is flown. Also how the aeroplane was flown in service only proves it could be done not that it was safe so to do. IIRC the investigation into the lose of pilot and P38 at DX was performing manoeuvres that were specifically advised against in something like the pilots notes.
Nobody would like to see 558 roll but certainly not at the cost of any life and the undoubted consequences of such an accident would have on airshows and projects in the future.
Everybody is wow, including me, but the consequences if anything went wrong even if unrelated to the manoeuvre would be disastrous.
I get the impression that the Kiwis were really proud of their effort towards winning WW2.
And so they should especially after how the Anzacs were used in the first.
As you say thank you all for helping.
The pros and cons of a new film have been worked through in other threads but
What ever you do don’t mention the ……………
Is it just me, or is that not an RAF F35?
I wouldn’t know all modern fast jets look the same to me.:D Discuss.
Is there something they are not telling us ??
Ken
Yes, the cost of fitting CATOBAR isn’t high enough yet. When everything is too late and 10 times the cost I predict this is the way we will end up going.
Me thinks Moggy is about to pop up with his mod hat on.
F35B, my advice is do not hold your breath and start work on a new true VSTOL capable aeroplane that actually works using proven technology.
The best kept secret at RIAT this year.
After the crowds had left the final departure.

Shackleton would of course be great but not achievable I think.
I wouldn’t recommend saying that to the folks at Coventry:)
The question was for next season 2016 and I think even with the best will in the world Rich would agree that next season is unlikely.
Agree about the audience for the Vulcan but again the question related to next season and to attract Joe public would it not have to be a large multi engine jet.
So realistically for next season without knowing the situation regarding the Gannet and the Buccaneers Mr. Yagen is our best hope.
Actually I am not so sure, many hundreds of thousands turned out for two Lancs I think they may turn out for a season of merlin engined formations that included KA114
Yep certainly is. Burger bars, fun fairs, camera shops, paint your face, army surplus shops, book stools, hat stools etc etc. Sorry did you say they had aeroplanes at airshows?
Shackleton would of course be great but not achievable I think. How is the Gannet coming along? Are there not two airworthy Buccaneers owned by a company for government contract work or such?
And of course the Mossie. Now that would be nice a Lanc, Mossie, a Spit or three and a couple of Hurries.
It makes you wonder what next year’s major airshow attraction is going to be.
2014 ………The two Lancasters
2015 ………Last flights of XH558 :apologetic:
2016 ………. ??
One thing that almost certainly won’t be at RIAT next year is an F35B.
You misunderstand me
No I didn’t! 😀
Just my dry sense of humour. I do not know whether you live in Essex or not. 😉 no offence meant.
