And long may they do so: many’s the time I’ve thanked them for a quick exit out of the carpark at an airshow.
Yes I call it the Vulcan effect as I have noticed many, shall we call them people, jump up and leave to get back to Essex after 558 or the Reds. This nicely clears the crowd line and the traffic jams before I am told to leave at closing time to get back to Tunbridge Wells. Personally I’m disgusted at such behaviour as it shows disrespect to following displays.:D:D
I rushed to read this thinking that something terrible had happened possibly to a Mk1 only to find the title misleading!!!
Perhaps the mods could change the title to something less frightening!
Or merge with other merged threads and move to GA. Just a thought.:D:D
From our seats half way up and at the western end of the FRIAT grandstand my wife took these pictures of 558 approaching from the east which have intentionally not been edited in anyway.
558 takes off and makes a north circuit and “salutes” the grandstand.
Yes, yes I know she is an inanimate object!

My wife was not able to lift the camera back any further. Lens at 160mm.

Not a patch on Hendon 1930.
.
I say chaps I was thinking more of Kitty Hawk 1903. Not much in the line up and the flying display didn’t last too long but boy what an event. Many people still talk of it today.:D
Not posted from my IPhone, just in case you were interested.
Intrigue away, I’m not sayin lest it restarts debates abut safety, green isues and whether there was any educational value. You needed to be there.
As apparently this is ĺa “spirited” thread I had assumed that 558 had it’s own entity and therefore able to make a gesture.
Next along the English police and the drifters.
It’s just a picture of a plane doing something I thought people would be interested in, now we are into how old the audience is and whether RIAT is the show it used to be.
Now if we want to talk air displays how about Biggin Hill and Farnborough back in the 60’s and 70’s now they WERE air shows. I suppose you should consider yourself lucky if you are too young and therefore have nothing to compare today’s shows with. (And yes I know never end a sentence with with, but then they probably no longer teach that anyway)
For the avoidance of any doubt 558 did not come to any harm.
Nice gesture made by 558 as she departed today resulting in another round of applause.
Hi David, Yes I know but……….
I just posted a couple of pictures, of the Vulcan here and about the unusually large collection of Hurricanes which I thought formorites might find interesting, as I did. It hadn’t been my intention to spark off debates and implied critisms of anybody or anything but apparently I cannot even get the title of the thread to please everybody. I thought I was a born pessimist with my glass always half empty but apparently there are people with glass empty. If there had been an accident I hope anybody on here would just plainly say so in the title. Personally I thought that the “turn” was “unexpected” and at an “event” but there you go apparently people jumped to the conclusion that it had crashed and burned, and the mods seem to agree.
Absolutely nothing to do with you and, of course, you are quite right about the advisability of such a manoeuvre however much some of us enjoyed it. One can just imagine the comments on here if the outcome had ended in disaster as some people appear to be expecting.

Parameters changed is akin to running off fatigue life !
I thought that is what I said as I assumed forumites didn’t need this explaining.
Impressive flying – debatable if it has anything to do with educating the public about its primary role !
Not debatable at all. Whilst I accept you continue to learn all through your life, at 65 I actually go to airshows to see these magnificent machines fly and fly in an interesting manor if safe to do so. Do people go to motor racing to be educated? I think not. So why do airshows need to be educational?
Now if you are referring to something needing to be Green or educational to obtain grants on funding that is completely different but not quite sure why you felt the need to make this point on this thread which is simply and most straightforwardly about a manoeuvre made by a specific aeroplane that perhaps hasn’t been seen for some 45 years. But then I am just a simple lad.:D
It was announced prior to today’s display that the exuberance of yesterday would not be repeated today!!
Personally I for one would like to thank Chief Pilot Martin Withers DFC for the huge part he has played in keeping 558 flying and giving pleasure to many hundreds of thousands with his displays.
As I understand it the parameters have recently changed and whilst we all of course like to see her go out with something truly memorable there is no way that we would want the excellent safety record lost.
So is six going to be a record at Biggin Hill in August?
A voice of sanity. Thank you Tangmere.
Not the forum’s greatest thread.
Moggy
+1
Indeed thank you Tangmere1940 and Moggy, hopefully for the silent majority.
