I guess that unless we remove these items from the ground with our very own hands we will never know or truely trust the source of these relics. But it is still nice to think they are actually what they say they are.

    Thanks for that Andy.

In the not so distant future we should be sitting on a whole heap of aircraft salvage. No idea what yet but the first look is looking good. 😉

    I will look him up.

    Amazing guys. Thanks for that.

A wide and varied use of aircraft material.

With a lot of the cast I have found I would like to try and melt it down and produce a model of whatever aircraft it came from.

I have no idea how this would turn out or the cost of the procedure but sometimes I feel it would be better than it being thrown out in the bucket when I eventually pop my clogs. If it were in the shape of say a spitfire it would stand a better chance of being kept or sold to someone who wanted it.

Not to detract from the object of the thread but has anyone used reclaimed material from an aircraft for any purpose other than a collection piece that came from said aircraft.

For instance melted it down and used it to for a toilet roll holder fasioned from cast from the engine. Or plate to form a brush pan out of.

Just curious as to how some material ends up.

Personally I would like something to be made from all the scrap cast I have found over the years so that it would represent the form of the aircraft it came from in some way or another.

How possible is this?? Does anybody know?

With respect at the risk of going off theme and being accused of sour grapes what do you call an airframe ?

Well if one were to think in terms of spitfire rebuilds one would only need have a data plate for it to called an airframe. Or at least a base to form one.

I thought I would post this here just to settle any confusion on what the Mosquito group do or do not have.

    From their own press release.

“The People’s Mosquito are very pleased to announce that an airframe for the restoration project has been confirmed. The remains of Mosquito NF.36 RL249, recovered in 2006, have been donated to the group. The remains include the all-important identity, along with several other original items.

The fuselage and wings for the restoration will be manufactured from new, while other parts will be sourced from other locations or re-manufactured.”

Now I did say aquired an airframe to form a base from. And as someone has already pointed out it does depend on what you call an airframe.

As many of us know from years on this forum Spitfires have been formed from less material than this.

Airframe or not it is still a good base to start from.

I wouldnt say that aquiring the donation of an airframe from the time of the groups formation until now is unstable would you?

I think we all agree that it is an ambitious project but unstable sounds a bit extreme.

While the Whirlwind group are the picture of stability? I guess time will tell in the long run.

I favour none of the groups but I do want to see both complete their projects

“I would rather donate to this group rather than the ‘Peoples Mosquito’ project.”

To be honest why should one project be prefered over the other. They are both very worthy causes.

If you would prefer to see a certain aircraft type in the skies because you have an association to that aircraft then fair enough but why one group over the other?

Personally I think there is still enough money, time and effort there for several different projects.

I would love to see all of the in the air.

Has anyone noticed that the Mosquito group have aquired an airframe to form a base from.

It fits the profile for scaffolding. Horizontal pieces like this are used to strengthen or to guard. They do indeed have some pieces similar to this that are not broken down at all. I have seen these many times on the back of scaffolding wagons.

But I do agree with you that it does not seem like your typical scaffolding construction piece. Maybe an older piece but I guess unless someone comes forward that has used one of these before then we may never know what this item is.

    Thanks for that Smirky.

I presume this connector would be used for lots of different purposes throughout a Spitfire would it?

Learning all the time. Slowly but learning.

Ian, yeah your right the lamp holder probaly had one hundred and one uses in every aircraft built from 1939 right through to 1960’s or 70’s I would imagine.

I am assuming it is a lamp holder and not something else. I gather I would be right in assuming this?

Figterace, the plate is definately from a spitfire here in Scotland. I have been told many times about this aircraft and the fact that many people over the years basically reduced this aircraft to ground level from the 40’s onwards people were picking pieces off this aircraft. From schoolboys trying to build their own radio sets to people just trying to make a few pounds for scrap. I now know the corroded hulk of the merlin crank case is still on site.

I am working on finding out exactly where the aircraft is sitting and a site visit with photos will follow.

I dont expect we will find much but who knows. One for a future dig possibly.

I have just been told that when these parts were found that a prop reduction gear and part of the base of a wooden prop were found with the prop retaining it black laminated outer skin.

More details as and when I find them out.

Thanks for the info so far guys.

Bruce the plates are what I thought they were then. Brake shoes basically. I wondered what these looked like on aircraft.

I was handed these items the other day and was told it was from a Spitfire wreck site. This is a site that I am now investigating and will be looking for shortly. Watch this space. Meanwhile anyone else any ideas.

I would be interested in finding out what the info on the plate means. If indeed anyone knows or if there are any references out there.

Its also had 70 odd years being kicked around hangars and sheds and god knows where else so I would assume plenty of time to get a bit beaten up.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be from a crashed aircraft. It could of been from a damaged but in for repair aircraft at the Cunliffe Owen factory at Macmerry.

But if it was from a crashed Hudson in Scotland there are so many to choose from.

Is it possible that there is a serial number stamped somewhere either on or in the fin. Not that I am suggesting getting the tin snips out.
