In some boxes somewhere I have scans from the original photos of this aircraft being restored at Overloon. Would anyone be intrested in seeing them or should I keep them hidden as I have no idea who might own the rights to them. I did scan them with permission from original photos but these were in the possesion of a second party having aquired them from the owner.
I would really like to see them posted somewhere.
What are the feelings of the forum.
Should I or Shouldn’t I.
I simply just dont know.
If you want me to post them whats the best image storage place to put them?
Over to you.
Well the stencil reads in English translation. Do Not Touch. Which ties in with it being Aileron etc.
Interesting to see what others can put to this.
Hi Robert,
Well first the arts and crafts place next to them closed as I think I am right in saying the owner did a bunk without paying staff etc. Although the Arts and crafts gallery were actually nothing to do with the shop it must have suffered and only survived a short while after the shop closed. The had art and craft products that I wouldnt really have ever bought. The only reason I was ever there was because of the Drem stuff. I think I am right in saying it was a former assistant at the Museum of Flight that ran the place. I say assistant because I dont remember his position. I think he was higher up in the place and get the feeling he was forced out or quit when the “New” management were put in place. This is my understanding of it but I could be completely wrong. Anyhow it was him that started the place and ran the small Drem museum. I had hoped it would thrive and be a bigger success perhaps even outgrowing the building but these things have a way of not turning out. Others on here will know the correct story or the exact story but this is my understanding and I am always willing to be proven wrong.
And Lyffe yes that is the place I am thinking off. I am very local when it comes to Drem and like Robert I can pop in anytime I choose. I also used to fly model aircraft at Drem.
My mate informs me that some of the old museum stuff could be seen at the archery centre. That was at least there the last time he was down. I think last year.
Robert I wouldnt bother going to the arts and crafts gallery wartime Drem display as it no longer exists. Abandoned a few years ago. But some of the items exist in a smaller display in one of the other Fenton Barns buildings. Another place took the items under their wing and displays them albeit poorly from what I was told. I may be able to let you know which building it was. Might take some time though.
The main thing is the guy is ok and uninjured. I am sure the CAA will do all they need to do to praise or chastise the guy.
Just as an experiment does anyone on here have any ideas on the aircraft and or pilot. I mean mostly we get info back within an hour about various different request we post on here.
Can we the people supply an aircraft ID and or Pilot ID.
Just shows the people can sometimes be more effective than the powers that be.
Certainly seen that being the case on here several times.
You could try contacting The museum of flight at East Fortune. If anyone has an image they might.
Hi Robert,
Yes any info you have regarding relatives would be greatly appreciated.
As you may have gathered Drem is my collegue and if you could pm me or Drem that would be great.
Obviously pictures of the crew is the thing most of us here strive to find as it puts a face to the name sort of thing.
As Drem said Acklington was where 141 sqn was based at the time and East Fortune was simply the closest air base with a mortuary.
Probably the nearest airfield to the crash site too.
Hi Peter
I knew there was no dual type of this aircraft and understand it would be common practice for the accompaning pilot to stand either behind or between the seats.
I gather it would have been the same in this situation.
Paul,
You mention that the deaths are registered at Cockburnspath in 1944. Is that just a typo or do you have the record. I have just downloaded the Death Register entry and it clearly states 1942 which is correct for the date of the accident. Also you state that the aircraft crashed into the ground at night. Again the death register states that the time of death was 3h 40min PM which would be 15.40 PM to us. Given that it was during may it would have been light until evening. So the only other visibility factor would have been bad weather.
Where did you read that it was at night. Can you state your reference.
Not trying to bring anyone down or snipe at anyone. Thanks for all your hard work. We just want to get the details right thats all.
Just seen a flying Hunter advertised for $250,000 US a 2 seat version
As far as I am aware one of the pilots was hitching a lift back to England. I believe it was quite common practice to do this. Not sure how practical this was in a Beaufighter but presuming they were going from East Fortune to Acklington its only about a 30min flight isnt it?
There have been many lives lost while catching a lift to another base. I know of a few but these are mainly bombers.
Anyone know of any other incident with Beaufighters where there was someone catching a lift?
Pilot was?
CROUSE, HAROLD BANFORD
141 Squadron
Aircraft was from Acklington.
Although the bodies were recovered to East Fortune.
08/05/1942
Appears to have been Crouse that was driving or at least thats what I have spoken to people about and unless the crash card tells us something different then thats the story I am going with.
In this case Ebay must respond by removing any vehicle from their listing as they are all Weapon Delivery Systems.
I mean any aircraft could be piled into a building and explode. This we know and have seen it happen on a grand scale and on the smaller Cessa typed scale too.
Cars Vans and Lorries can all be packed with fertiliser or other home made weapons and used as a bomb or a rocket platform. Commonly used by terrorists and commonly used by the IRA in the past as a mortar platform.
Motorbikes maybe not so much so but these can be used to great effect for drive by shootings so these too deliver weapons.
Lastly water bourne craft. As with all of the above this is a weapon carrying device too. Just load up with explosive and aim for the nearest ship.
It can all go a bit too far really.
Anyone remember the MIGS for sale on ebay. Did they ever get sold does anyone know?
Thread is too long to search all through it to see if this has been posted already so here you go.
Miss D at Traprain Law in East Lothian just search for Traprain in you tube for the other video.
