RE: Percy Leslie Moxey
I would also like to thank Henk Welting on the RAF Commands board as he posted the same initial info as well. And he deserves some credit as well. I have written replies to each of the men thanking them for their help with the information.

RE: Rebuild or Replica??
Well for me the whole thing we do in life is make things look like they should and make things look good. If it looks good and it sounds good then thats fair enough to me. I would however say that there has to be a certain percentage of the “genuine” airframe in the rebuild to qualify. Perhaps some warbird restorers could lets us know if there are any figures. But I guess it is the genuine article if it has any of the original airframe in it.

RE: War Cemeteries
Hi Kev
is it the same for cemeteries that are only part cared for by cwgc.
I think that it is a sad state of affairs when vandals wreck graves and other memorials.

RE: War Cemeteries
Hi Snapper thanks for your comments on the snap.
The reason I asked was that not being able to afford the great digital camera we all like to dream of I opted for a 40 quid mini made by Mustek (G-smart) its about all I can afford. As I was going to use it to take piccies for my website as long as it is readable then it should be ok. There are some plus points to it and some negative. Negative first is that Indoor pictures are a big no unlike my mates 40 quid camera and obviously the res and quality are another.
Plus are it almost fits in my wallet and is usually found in my poket or round my neck. And nobody knows its there. It is also rechargeable through the pc but this can also be a negative.
You were right about it being heavily compressed as I used jpeg optimiser to comp it to below the 100 kb limit.
Would it be ok to send you the original to get your opinion on it and see if it will suit my requirements. I will send it via email its about 125 kb.
On the Cemeteries point though I visited the war graves on Rhodes 2 years ago. I will be going to Rhodes this year again and will visit the cemetery again if I am in that part of Rhodos. I left a note in the CWGC visitor book. How many other cemeteries have a visitors book I wonder as I had never seen that before.

RE: War Cemeteries
Nice story Moggy. I like walking around the Graves of the ones who gave their lives for freedom. It is better when you are there yourself or with someone who doesnt talk too much when you are visiting graves. Just out of coincidence I was out photographing a grave and crash site today (see pic Below).
I was once critisised, and the guy was pretty angry, for not going to the Rememberance Sunday service at the local war memorial. He was pretty upset at me and went off on one. Now I must admit I would like to go to the service every year but I havent been the last few years. But when he was going on at me I dont think he fully knew my situation and who or what I was. We had been talking and he asked me if I had been to the srevice I said no I didnt go. He started to say things like call yourdself interested in the war and things like that. To which my reply was why would I need to go to a service when I Think of and Remember our war dead every single day. I explained that I was more than just interested and that I researched aviation and more or less everyday I read about or went over notes about our war dead. He stopped going on at me and started with the old war stories.
This is a pic of the Solitary RAF War Grave in Macmerry Churchyard.
The fact that it is the only RAF grave is fantastic as the Church is right next door to the airfield and infact the Mortuary is said to be on the church grounds but I have yet to find anyone who knows what building it is.
The pilots name is Burman he flew his Mustang through a set of H/T wires and was said to be decapitated. His plane flew on and buried itself into the field on the airfield before the engine shot out of the earth and on for a further 600 yards.
Here is the pic of his Grave
PS what do you think of the picture quiality. Feed back please.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-01-03 AT 10:28 PM (GMT)]Snapper,
Why do I get the feeling that 007 is coming round your house right now to assasinate you after the comments about Blair.
Apparently after they released the statement there was another right after it that they were already rethinking that strategy of buying the hotel for asylum seekers. This was on a BBC news program.
Also I dont wish to take over someones thread here but who hates whats going on with the Firefighters / Military. All I seem to hear is Firefighters taking the mickey out of the military because they have to use 50 + year old green goddesses. Wont it be a laugh when the Firefighters all get paid off and the military gets trained up on the new engines to take over permanent.
While I think the firefighters do a good job look at what a soldier gets paid to do much more than a firefighter. They have to be a firefighter, a security guard, a student, a marksmen, a housekeeper, a driver, a teacher, a cook and a cleaner all in one but they dont get paid nearly what the firefighters want. Also the soldiers even buy their own kit now (or so I have heard recently. Now what kind of a world do we live in. Firefighters should do their job just as those in the military do their job. Because they want to do it.

RE: Percy Leslie Moxey
Dont know anything specific but got this form The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It has a little information on him which I havent often seen on the CWGC. You usually fin the service number, place of burial and often the mother and fathers name with the place they came from but his entry goes a little further but not much.
Here is the direct quote from the CWGC website.

RE: Funny ( or not that funny) pics
Snapper,
A similar story to your one happened at East Fortune in Scotland.
A beaufighter coming into land set himself up on the runway and somehow managed to loose off a few rounds. He must have given himself a fright as he totalled the aircraft. I think he lived to try it again.
The report says pilot error as the guns should have been disengaged when he came over the coast.

RE: Air Historical Branch
Hi John
I did get good info from the AHB and I keep asking these types of questions in order to get a better understanding of where my next source of information is going to be. ie after getting an AM1180 and AM78 then consulting various books and newspapers etc what then can be done to get more info and it would seem that the AHB is that next step. But I only really wanted to know what kind of info I could find there to know what I could request.
Thanks to all for your info.
Interesting website John

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-01-03 AT 00:52 AM (GMT)]BULL**IT and CODSWALLOP
alexis all aircraft are for flying. Personally to me if all the museum pieces could fly then i would like to see them up there. While realising we have to preserve examples in museums I would rather see anything fly than having it sit static.
I saw the BBMF Lanc for the first time this year and it was one of thee most gracefull aircraft I have ever seen but nothing bets the sound of those four engines beating up a tune across the sky in front of you. Apart from maybe four Hercules engines in a Halibag eh Lancman. LOL
What it is to dream I suppose.
BBMF do the pilots of the war proud they show off the aircraft to show their skills and the aircrafts beauty. I would not see anyone berate the BBMF crew as they also do us proud.

IN REPLY TO POST NUMBER 10
RE: Air Historical Branch
Thanks Kev
I actually had help from them before via a letter. It was when I first started research and wanted to know how to research aircraft losses and airfields. So I knew they did this but for this guy to get personnel details was something else. Must ahve been his lucky day.
I know I metinoned them on another post and you added the new address but I never knew how much they actually did. I would just like to find out more. If they do personnel records there are a few people I would like to find out about.
Regards Merlin
RE: Well..now thats something!
I assume that they would have to follow the US new laws about light aircraft and having parachutes.
Just a thought
