I assume that they would have to follow the US new laws about light aircraft and having parachutes.

    Just a thought

I think he is. At least he was when he left EF. Perhaps he might tell us what he is up to now himself.

Hey I know it would have taken more than a couple of hours but at times it seems that there were a few cases that could have, how can I word this without causing offence, been put to better use. 🙂

I sure do wish we had you back at times though.

The above post wasnt a dig at you directly but you were the one in the firing line when it came to irrate members of the public. Do you remember the conversation. It cant have been that long before you left. I hate to say it but I think things have slid just a little at the museum since you left. I am sure there are a few passionate people on this forum who think the same. Although it is the museum we all love and know so well. RE: Research information

    Hi people

Thanks for the info Steve, Ashley and kev.

Ashley, what would I be likely to get hold of through IWM. I research Airfields in Scotland and also Aircraft accidents in the North of England and Scotland. What kind of information is available.

I know it could be a broad subject so dont go into too much detail just a rough guide.

    Thanks again Merlin

    RE: Research information

Just while I was thinking about online archives etc. I did a search for information on Sandy Johnstone of 602 squadron and came upon a little bit of interesting news about him. read the whole story here.:-
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/1077099.stm

The whole story is about when he died but has a few little stories one which I have included below which I can just imagine him doing.

“He gained notoriety before the war when he landed his damaged plane on Portobello beach, Edinburgh, and tethered it to a lamppost while he went into town to phone back to base.”

Not quite the same as that but we had to do the same thing “tethering to a lamppost” but ours was a speed boat that broke down and we rowed up onto Portobello beach at high tide and tethered the boat to a lamp post “I wonder if it was the same lamp post”

I also wonder if there are any photographs of this occassion?

    RE: PRO at Kew.

    Hi John

    Thanks for the good info.

I am like yourself an aviation researcher of sorts. I already know about the AM1180 and AM78 records cards and share your reasonable doubt to the actual cause written on some of the reports. I have found this interesting reading in the past. But this aircraft is RNAS a chesapeake to be precise and have already contacted Yeovilton about the possibility of existing records but as you probably know loads of the record cards were destroyed. The reason given to me by someone was that once an item of equipment was destroyed or no longer with the Navy the records were destroyed as there was no point to keeping records of something you didt have.

Any way I am in the process of trying to get some other files which might help with the cause of the accident.

    Regards merlin

    ps.

Does anyone know if a researcher could get their hands on local services records. By this I mean Police reports or fire service reports. I feel sure that this accident would have had to been submitted to both services.

Anyone else got any info on where to find obscure reports that I might not think of. IE crew details, aircraft details, Local reports etc etc.

RE: Help wanted on RAF memorabilia

On the point of the crowns used it was the queen that was in power at this time as it is the queens crown being used and not the kings crown as you see with some of the badges etc.

RE: New Curator at East Fortune

    Hi Keith, der , alastair

I havent met the new curator yet but no doubt I will.

I think I have seen the Bone Dome in the display case and I think I am right in thinking it is still there.

When Adam Smith was there I had a go at him for the number of empty cases sitting around as there must be loads of aquisition the could fill a case with. I got the reply that there were no empty cases only ones waiting restock. Now cmon what does it take to print off a few cards and fill a cabinet. A couple of hours at most. But when I wentt back there were no empty cases.

    RE: PRO at Kew.

    Hi People

Glen, the last time I looked at the costs for the PRO it came to quite alot of money. The first thing was you send them £10 andthey will look at the file and if the cost of copying comes to less than £10 then you will be sent the report. I assume you dont get any change as a way of paying for the persons time.

Ashley, Thanks, good info as usual but I have already looked up the details using PROCAT and there are a few reports and copies I would like but that will have to wait. as I said above I am sure that is the way they work but I will look at the site again to see their method of sending copies out.

Steve I would like to take you up on your offer. It is one report into a test that they did the year before on the exact aircraft I was looking into and it actually came as a surprise to me finding it.

The 60th anniversary is coming up soon and I was supposed to have built a memorial for the incident as about 13/14 people were killed and many more injured. But ill health in the family etc you know how it goes and I have not been able to get along with the project but now I have a new burst of energy to get on with the research and hopefully at the end I will have a very comprehensive report on the incident at the end of it all.

Steve I will contact you via email.

    >A complete lack of Helicopter display teams.

Sorry got to disagree. I saw the Blue Eagles last year at Leuchars and they really were something else. I actually watched the whole display from the one spot I was stood on. Apart from the one thing most people go to see. The BBMF. I saw them while I browsed around the stalls. I had seen them and indeed the Lanc for the first time last year at East Fortune so I could afford to wander round while they were displaying. No Disrespect to the pilots and crew it was just that I had seen them before a couple of months earlier but as for the rest of them most I had never seen before.
