RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
I would seriously like to know if the activists thing is true but then again who really cares. It seems as though the viewing public have already given up so whats the use of trying to find out usless pieces of information like that.
To all the doubters wheter she flies again or not is not the issue it whether we can do anytthing to help that matters. Just when the project needs its most support all the so called fans up sticks and abandon the whole idea. Would you be so willing to see this happen if it were a lanc or spit or even a 109 or 190.
Where is all the die hard spirit going to these days. I wonder why I even bother to post somtimes as I already know the reply. I think in general you are being defeatist and just cant see the potential of this great chance to relive an age.

Ok Lancman
Thats your view but I bet you a lot more people want her flying than not. So cmon guys lets get some ideas and get this big bad bird flying again.

RE: CFS3 – A crock of poo
Guys
you have got to remember that it isnt how fast your comp or graphics are its what crap you have floatingaround inside clogging up the system. I would suggest running a scandisk a defrag and remove anything that you dont use then try again.
For instance CFS2 runs on my comp and can stall quite a bit. So I removed it and after that I had a failure (nothing to do with cfs2) so I erased the whole disk and started again. cfs2 ran great.
I now have 2002 pro and it does the same but the comp I have only runs it with the beechcraft and cessna sized files anything bigger crashes it.
The comp I have is celeron 466 with 64mb ram intel 810 chipset
hardly surprising it doesnt run that well is it.

RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
Philo.
I dont like the idea of her siting around in bits either but the fact is unless the money can be raised some other way then we wont see her fly or even taxi again.
The people we should all be discussing this with are TVOC and not HLF.
HLF are obviously set in their ways and their plans for people to operate aircraft. I knew that they wouldnt put up money for an aircraft to fly, I am just surprised that TVOC did not know this. They will put up money for a static aircraft but they must have something in writing that says that it will be static. Also the reason for taliking to TVOC is to find out what the next plan is because every good plan must have a backup plan. What is theirs??
I think it was stupid and shortsighted to just expect HLF to put up the money. Everything was hanging on them saying YES. Di they ever expect them to say no and what was the plan when they did turn round and say no.
The big question is.
WHAT HAPPENS TO XH558 NOW???????

RE: FlyPast article on airfield dumpsites
Hi Guys
Perhaps the reason that the dump sites and dig site havent been reported is so to keep the tresure hunters in the dark about some sites. I being part of the digger community know how heartbreaking it is to find a site and then be pipped to the post by someone who wants all the finds for himself and doesnt offer any parts up to the rebuilds or museums. Also you will find that this community is built up of possibly hundreds of small groups who all work in the same area and dont talk to other groups to share info or work. And this ends up with people going over the same areas and wasting time.
I personally would like an engine of my own to restore and run at events. If I could do this in my life time I will be happy. But if I found servicable parts then I would put them up to any group that was going to fly or was flying that type. The only cost to them would be shipping and possibly a small fee to cover equipment should anything else other than a spade and metal detector be needed. But hopefully the only cost would be shipping.
I dont think it would be wise to broadcast these sites on the magazine cover. I do however think that it would be nice to hear of what had been found on actual sites dug. And think that they could do a feature on aviation archaeology that tracks the finds of different groups.
I know of at least two sites that the stuff would be so easy to get to that one day would be enough to destroy the site. I think I will sit on these sites until I am ready to take o the task or untill someone else finds them.
what do you guys think.

RE: FlyPast article on airfield dumpsites
What about all the Lend Lease Spitfire dumped into the sea. I meet one 603 Squadron (City of Edinburgh) Who flew from an airfield in his spit and landed it on the carrier to be pushed over the side. Although the aircraft would now be a moulten mess because of the materials used and the corrosion it would be interesting to see what was down there.
I also know of a few sites local to me where aircraft were buried and I am under no illusion of what I might find. Possibly moslty crushed wing panels of fuse panels as the weight of the other aircraft and earth would crush them and possibly if we dug long enough we might get a few useable pieces to help with someones restoration. But more than likely end up with a lot of scrap metal for the dealer to come and take away.
I am interested in the Merlin engines that are dumped in my are but they would require quite a bit of work to get them out. I know of at least two site where these are and I am working on finding a third.
I know that good things are out there all you have to do is talk to lots and lots of people do a bit of research and then everything usually fits into place.

RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
I cant help but think WHY oh WHY did this whole project hinge on the HLF. Even I know that they WILL NOT give money for anything that is going to fly or run and work as a mechanical thing. I am sure that it even says that in their application pack so I dont understand why they even went to HLF. Yes it is sad to think we will never see this beast in the air again and yes it is a disgrace that HLF wont give money to a piece of great British heritage. But is it time to give up. Have any other options been explore ie sponsership I am sure I would like to see her plastered with sponsor logos and flying than sitting in some hangar in pieces. Anyone know Bill Gates number or his extension no. at Microsoft. How about the oil companies they have got plenty cash havent they.
Or here is the million dollar question. Would the RAF or Military like to have the Vulcan back to fly as part of a new Memorial flight.
Now before everyone starts on about costs and such like I know it is highly unlikely that they would entertain this but has anyone asked the question.
I think it is a good idea in theory if not in practice.
And lets face it the lanc and other aircraft will become grounded eventually and what will take their place?
Come on people let rally some support round there must be something that can be done. I am sure the BofB pilots wouldnt have just given up.
I have read that people think there is a more viable vulcan out there but in reality the work done to XH558 is in a far more advanced state than any other in the country and really doesnt have that far to go to get flying. That is whay its so heartbreaking. SO NEAR YET SO VERY FAR.
I have heard this said before from an old pilot and I will say it in his stead. “Dont let the bast*rds get you down boys”

RE: Airmans ghost in squadron picture.
Thanks kev.
Why didnt I think of that before. The local newspaper might have had something in it but I have found that so far most of the stories that made the local paper were only when the incidents involved a civilian.
When the military are the sole loss then usually they didnt or werent allowed to report. But a serious source for research all the same. I will make an effort to have a look in the paper and our local history centre has the paper on microfilm which is handy. I must admit it is a bit of a task trying to find out which piece it is in though as I only have Early 1919 to go on. but the paper is only a weekly paper so it wont be too hard. I would also have to look through the Scotsman and The Edinburgh Evening News as these are local too.

RE: Airmans ghost in squadron picture.
I have looked through all the Jacksons for the RAF and Navy and found nothing local. Perhaps he is somewhere else now as part of a reburial but where.
The station was a TDS (Training Depot Station) at the time but I still have no clue what squadrons were there.
Still looking for more info.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-11-02 AT 10:53 PM (GMT)]Hi Kev
Well I spotted a few mistakes in the story too.
Firstly that there were naval uniforms in the photo. It has been a shared base at times in its career so it is possible both navy and air force were there at the same time. It wouldnt be the RAF it would have been the RFC if I am right in thinking this.
It is possible that this is a navy photo so I shall search the CWGC again to look for able seamen.
In the inset there are two faces the guy in the hat partially smiling and the guy behind him. Freddy Jackson ?????
I must visit the airfield and local Cemetries. I will ask around if anyone knows where service men were buried in 1919.
Some people appear to be smiling but the overall mood seems to be a bit somber.
It is of course a pretty unlikely story and perhaps this guy did exist but the one without the hat is someone entirly differnt that everyone just forgot was there like the squadron nerd or something and he forgot his hat BUT this story really interests me. It my local area and I would just like to see the original photo and find the guys grave. It should be local because in those day a car doing 20-30 mph was good so to go to the funeral that day and get back for the photo would have took some time. So it has to be local.
