    RE: Merlin engine pics.

    Lancman

I had the same idea also but alas I have no money to implement the plan. Indeed I dont even have any engines.

I have also had the idea that you could have a set of running engines to start up at shows. Say a Clerget (spelling) a Daimler Benz , Merlin, Hercules, Griffon, Alison (sorry if this is wrong) and something like a Rotax just to give people the idea of how differently all these different engines perform.

    Regards Merlin.

Thanks for that ageorge. There is something that I dindt know.

When do they fly is it during the week or weekends. I would like to go down and see them sometime.

Also if you happen to be down sometime I will come and meet you.

email me from the board. and I will supply an email for you. Taking pics of the pics might just work and it will get me in the picture anyway.

    Regards Scott.

I know that the Runway at Drem was grass and that there was metal mesh to keep the runway mud free but this wasnt always the case. We have a small grass runway for flying the models from and a perimeter track in front so we can land on it too.

Also did you know that the inner tubes for the tyres were sourced right hwere in Scotland. A local firm in Grangemouth had the very size for the tyres. Something I am told nowhere else so far had.

All thanks to 57 Rescue. Thanks Ian Foster.

So I think the Halifax may just sit on her tyres when she is finished.

ageorge are you talking about the Dundonald in Scotland.

If so I would forget about Dundonald and just go down to YAM. it is easy to find and there are signs at the major motorway etc.

YAM is really worth seeing and I think it says a lot for the Staff at YAM that they completed their Friday the 13th with the funding they had. It has truely done them proud even if the props are the wrong way round.

I wont say too much on this subject though as another post covered this ground before.

Sorry the image quality is a little grainy. I had to compress the file to make it under the 100 kb rule.

    [updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-10-02 AT 11:14 AM (GMT)]Hi agerorge.

Is it possible that you mean Archerfield that the turbulent flies from as there are no airstrips at Drem other than the Macmerry Model Flying Club of which I am a memeber.

Archerfield is owned by the Duke of Hamilton and he flies his Scottish Aviation Bulldog from there also known to fly from there is Jim McTaggart with his Starduster Too. There have been others to fly from there but I dont know if they are visitors or live there.

I know the museum has been looking into getting some sport aircraft rather that Military / Warbirds as I asked if they would get a mustang as this really was a major aircraft at one point in East Lothian with these flying from Macmerry and they also flew from Kirknewton. I was told that sport aircraft were to be collected and that a Mustang would take too much of their very limited funds. But I think that if you get a ex Reno racer that has been slightly damaged and is up for disposal then to fix it up for static and possibly renew the wings if they have modified them then it would not cost all that much but I also think in the mean time that they could show the mustang as a Racer then it would be a sport aircraft.

The Turbulent is a good aircraft and its connection for Scotland was that a Scotsman form Lanark built it. I think thats a sound enough reason for collecting it but also I like the aircraft it a good little run around and at some point I would like to do a model of it. I have a set of plans so one day I might do it.

Also the Turbulent really doesnt take any space at all as it actually sits under the twin pioneer and another aircraft. So you couldnt get a Sea Vixen in the space it takes up anyway.

I havent met Dawn Kemp yet. But hope to soon.

    RE: Save a Sea Vixen

I know this subject has gone a bit cold of late but here is the reply email I got back from the Scottish Museum of Flight at East Fortune.

***Thanks for the info. We’re looking into the background of XJ571 to see if it fits MOF collecting policy. We do have a struggle to justify (from a space and provision of reasonable environment point of view) aircraft acquisition that do not show a strong Scottish connection.

We have to avoid the temptation to collect ‘the complete set’ of dH 1930’s +!. We simply would not have space to accomodate other aircraft in the future which may be far more important in Scottish terms to preserve North of the Border.

That there are about 12 Sea Vixens in collections in the UK makes it unneccessary for us to view this as an urgent case for preservation.

Many thanks for your email though. I hope that a good home is found if it cannot be East Fortune.***

Lets wait and see what happens and lets hear all your views on what links Scotland with the Sea Vixen.

    RE: Saving Private Ryan.

Firstly I must clear up a point Although I was in the army I never say any Action in any war. I left before Ihad to go into action. Just wasnt for me after a while. I think that my post doesnt justify itself in that it doesnt sound right. Of course the pictures were not just taken because they could they were taken to try and justify the events. An eye for an eye and all that I suppose. Dont know why he had them he just did. Maybe I was a bit to hard on you guys comming out with some of those statements but thats just how I feel.

I am not saying that the film wasnt good in fact it was the best film I had seen in a while. But any film to do with war I will watch at least once but in the uk the channel showed it on something like the Wednesday and them again on the Sunday and I felt it was that good that I had to watch it again incase I had missed any details the first time round.

Kev your comment about other scenes was a good one as I also think the scenes you mention were very well done and that they were among the more graphic of scenes.

Well you know the statement was if they do their job well and are fit to do the job then why not. It depends heavily on the application you put them into work as. For example you wouldnt put a Battle up against a Tornado or Harrier but you might use the battle as a means to transport a small amount of mail or passengers etc etc.

    All depends on the job.

And on the point of the battle pilots. They had no say they were ordered to do it.

I think people who learn English are often better at English than those who speak it through a native tongue. This is because they have had to learn it from scratch. All the theory all the dots and crosses and all the grammar. Where as we wot speak the queens English take it for granted and abuse it some wot.

    RE: Saving Private Ryan.

Sorry guys I dont agree with you that its a horrific scene. I was in the army briefly and saw the photos of the falklands that our corporal brough back (he was with 2 Para)

Now that was horrific. Hand to hand combat and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. One picture is him and his mate – the next his mate with a bullet through the head – the next the prisoner they took for the killing – the next the prisoner with a bullet through his head.

Now is that not horrific. I cant get emotinal over a film even if it was a true story it is still a piece of fiction when it come to the silver screen.

One of the piece that actually did get me a bit was the radio operator on the beach. Miller is shouting orders at him he rolls over to send the message and Miller rolls him back over to tell him more. He has no face just a mushy grey / white hole.

You only see a brief glance of this but this really sums up war. Lying next to you mate and the next minute hes gone.
